A Spatio-Temporal Point Process Model for Ambulance Demand
Ambulance demand estimation at fine time and location scales is critical for
fleet management and dynamic deployment. We are motivated by the problem of
estimating the spatial distribution of ambulance demand in Toronto, Canada, as
it changes over discrete 2-hour intervals. This large-scale dataset is sparse
at the desired temporal resolutions and exhibits location-specific serial
dependence, daily and weekly seasonality. We address these challenges by
introducing a novel characterization of time-varying Gaussian mixture models.
We fix the mixture component distributions across all time periods to overcome
data sparsity and accurately describe Toronto's spatial structure, while
representing the complex spatio-temporal dynamics through time-varying mixture
weights. We constrain the mixture weights to capture weekly seasonality, and
apply a conditionally autoregressive prior on the mixture weights of each
component to represent location-specific short-term serial dependence and daily
seasonality. While estimation may be performed using a fixed number of mixture
components, we also extend to estimate the number of components using
birth-and-death Markov chain Monte Carlo. The proposed model is shown to give
higher statistical predictive accuracy and to reduce the error in predicting
EMS operational performance by as much as two-thirds compared to a typical
industry practice
Servant Leadership to Toxic Leadership: Power of Influence Over Power of Control
To lead, you must serve. Servant leadership is the systematic process of developing the needs of servants ahead of those leaders found within private or public institutions. The principle behind effective leadership is based on the interplay of responsibility, respect, care, and working with people, not against people. Ultimately, leadership is about character and substance. Using the distinct characteristics of servant leadership to promote and foster the development of successful individuals is one of the fundamental concepts of servant leaders. Honest and caring concern for others leads to empowerment and emotional support which inspires the members to embrace the needs of the organization and creates a learning environment that is conducive to producing optimal performance from their employees. Although many times leadership roles and responsibilities are misunderstood, leadership is firmly grounded in doing the right thing; servant leadership serves to balance out that misinterpretation. Employee attrition is a direct result of problematic leadership. Today, more than in the past, leaders are being tasked with enormous responsibilities that demand both competent and effective leadership skills. Making an effective leader involves careful thought and skill development. The collective evidence strongly suggests that environments created through servant leadership will produce employees who challenge themselves to become creative, dedicated, loyal, and productive to the needs of their institutions, rather than toxic culture within any organization
Depth dependence of atomic mixing by ion beams
Ion backscattering spectrometry has been used to investigate the depth dependence of atomic mixing induced by ion beams. Samples consisting of a thin Pt (or Si) marker a few tens of angstroms thick buried at different depths in a deposited Si (or Pt) layer were bombarded with Xe+ of 300 keV at 2×10^16 cm^–2 dose and Ar+ of 150 keV at 5×10^15cm^–2 dose. Significant spreading of the marker was observed as a result of ion irradiation. The amount of spreading was measured as a function of depth of the marker, which was then compared with the deposited energy distribution. Measurements of this kind promise new insight into the nature of the interaction between ion beams and solids
BATSE Gamma-Ray Burst Line Search: IV. Line Candidates from the Visual Search
We evaluate the significance of the line candidates identified by a visual
search of burst spectra from BATSE's Spectroscopy Detectors. None of the
candidates satisfy our detection criteria: an F-test probability less than
10^-4 for a feature in one detector and consistency among the detectors which
viewed the burst. Most of the candidates are not very significant, and are
likely to be fluctuations. Because of the expectation of finding absorption
lines, the search was biased towards absorption features. We do not have a
quantitative measure of the completeness of the search which would enable a
comparison with previous missions. Therefore a more objective computerized

Solar response of the BATSE instrument on the gamma-ray observatory
The Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on board the gamma ray observatory (GRO) aims at comprehensive observations of time profiles, spectra, and locations of high-energy transient sources. The mysterious cosmic gamma ray bursts provided the main motivation for the observations, but BATSE will make excellent observations of many classes of sources, and in particular solar flares. The solar response of BATSE, as inferred from its design parameters, is analyzed for two purposes: the optimization of the solar observations themselves, and the characterization of the solar effects on ordinary nonsolar observations
Gamma-ray burst spectroscopy capabilities of the BATSE/GRO experiment
A scintillation spectrometer is included in each of the eight BATSE/GRO detector modules, resulting in all-sky coverage for gamma-ray bursts.
