Analysis of the properties of a steering shaft used as a back-up for a steer-by-wire system during system failure
YesAn analysis is presented to determine the best selection criteria for the properties of
a steering shaft to be used as a back-up apparatus for a steer-by-wire (SBW) system during
system failure. The properties of interest are the steering-shaft stiffness and its damping
coefficient. A mathematical model representing the failed state of an SBW system is derived,
and a set of experiments to validate the model is presented. Once the model had been
validated, further predictions of the car¿s handling behaviour for a range of steering-shaft
properties and different road speeds were completed by simulations in MATLAB/Simulink. A
minimum stiffness which did not cause the car to become unstable owing to overshoot was
determined, and the minimum acceptable damping coefficient value was derived. It is
concluded that the suggested stiffness and damping coefficient values increased the steering
ratio, and the results of further investigations are presented, which confirm that the vehicle is
safe to be driven in the event of SBW system failure if the recommended shaft properties are
used
Design concepts and analysis of a semi-active steering system for a passenger car
YesThe fundamentals and preliminary analyses of an innovative future technology referred
to as `semi-active steering' (SAS) are presented in this article. The proposed steering system
configuration is similar to a conventional electrical power-assisted steering with the replacement
of the rigid steering shaft with a low stiffness resilient shaft (LSRS), the presence of which allows
`active control¿ to be performed on vehicles similar to the concept of full steer-by-wire (SBW).
But, unlike SBW, the LSRS is an integral part of the system characteristics. The advantages of the
semi-active system in comparison with SBWand other conventional systems are demonstrated.
A mathematical model to predict the mechanical properties of the LSRS has been developed, and
experiments were conducted on a medium-sized car fitted with an LSRS to verify that vehicle
stability and drivability can be ensured in the event of active system failure. The results have
indicated that the vehicle was stable and safe to be driven at low speeds, and is predicted to
be driveable and safe at higher speeds. It is concluded that an SAS system of this type has the
potential to improve the safety of SBW systems
Time Resolved Correlation measurements of temporally heterogeneous dynamics
Time Resolved Correlation (TRC) is a recently introduced light scattering
technique that allows to detect and quantify dynamic heterogeneities. The
technique is based on the analysis of the temporal evolution of the speckle
pattern generated by the light scattered by a sample, which is quantified by
, the degree of correlation between speckle images recorded at
time and . Heterogeneous dynamics results in significant
fluctuations of with time . We describe how to optimize TRC
measurements and how to detect and avoid possible artifacts. The statistical
properties of the fluctuations of are analyzed by studying their
variance, probability distribution function, and time autocorrelation function.
We show that these quantities are affected by a noise contribution due to the
finite number of detected speckles. We propose and demonstrate a method to
correct for the noise contribution, based on a extrapolation
scheme. Examples from both homogeneous and heterogeneous dynamics are provided.
Connections with recent numerical and analytical works on heterogeneous glassy
dynamics are briefly discussed.Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures. Submitted to PR
Syrian Refugees and the Digital Passage to Europe: Smartphone Infrastructures and Affordances
This research examines the role of smartphones in refugees’ journeys. It traces the risks and possibilities afforded by smartphones for facilitating information, communication, and migration flows in the digital passage to Europe. For the Syrian and Iraqi refugee respondents in this France-based qualitative study, smartphones are lifelines, as important as water and food. They afford the planning, navigation, and documentation of journeys, enabling regular contact with family, friends, smugglers, and those who help them. However, refugees are simultaneously exposed to new forms of exploitation and surveillance with smartphones as migrations are financialised by smugglers and criminalized by European policies, and the digital passage is dependent on a contingent range of sociotechnical and material assemblages. Through an infrastructural lens, we capture the dialectical dynamics of opportunity and vulnerability, and the forms of resilience and solidarity, that arise as forced migration and digital connectivity coincide
Evaluation of the implementation of school exams using the brinkerhoff model in physics subjects in senior high school
School exam is one of the benchmarks of student learning outcomes as a test that is expected to provide information on the ability of students that can be used to consider and describe the achievement of students, especially in physics subjects. This study aims to describe the suitability of fixed vs. emergent design, formative vs. summative design, experimental design, and quasi-experimental vs. natural inquiry evaluation of the implementation of school exams in physics subjects in high school. This research uses the Brinkerhoff evaluation model proposed by Robert O. Brinkerhoff. The method used in this research is quantitative, and this type of research is evaluative. The data collection technique used a questionnaire, supported by observation and documentation, and a literature study to give meaning to the research results. The results showed that overall the organization of school exams in physics subjects in high school was very good. In the fixed vs. emergent design component, a total average of 95% is obtained from the teacher's perspective and 87% from the student's perspective, which is very good. Furthermore, for the formative vs. summative design component, a total average of 94% was obtained from the teacher's perspective and 88% from the student's perspective, which was in the excellent category. Then the experimental design and quasi-experimental vs. natural inquiry obtained a total average of 96% in the teacher's perspective and 88% in the student's perspective, which is in the excellent category. Thus, the implementation of school exams in physics subjects in high school is very good, but further research needs to be carried out to analyze, maintain, and at the same time improve what is lacking in terms of organizing school exams, starting from the preparation, implementation, and closing stages
