Layered Fabrication of Branched Networks Using Lindenmayer Systems
A current challenge impeding the growth of bone tissue engineering is the lack of
functional scaffolds of geometric sizes greater than 10mm due to the inability of cells to
survive deep within the scaffold. It is hypothesized that these scaffolds must have an
inbuilt nutrient distribution network to sustain the uniform growth of cells. In this
paper, we seek to enhance the design and layered fabrication of scaffold internal
architecture through the development of Lindenmayer systems, a graphical language
based theory to create nutrient delivery networks. The scaffolds are fabricated using the
Texas Instruments DLP™ system through UV‐photopolymerization to produce
polyethylene glycol hydrogels with internal branch structures. The paper will discuss
the Lindenmayer system, process planning algorithms, layered fabrication of samples,

Regulating the Energy Flow in a Cyanobacterial Light Harvesting Antenna Complex
Photosynthetic organisms harvest light energy, utilizing the absorption and
energy transfer properties of protein-bound chromophores. Controlling the
harvesting efficiency is critical for the optimal function of the
photosynthetic apparatus. Here, we show that cyanobacterial light-harvesting
antenna may be able to regulate the flow of energy in order to switch
reversibly from efficient energy conversion to photo-protective quenching via a
structural change. We isolated cyanobacterial light harvesting proteins,
phycocyanin and allophycocyanin, and measured their optical properties in
solution and in an aggregated-desiccated state. The results indicate that
energy band structures are changed, generating a switch between two modes of
operation: exciton transfer and quenching; achieved without dedicated
carotenoid quenchers. This flexibility can contribute greatly to the large
dynamic range of cyanobacterial light harvesting systems.Comment: Published at J. Phys. Chem.

Frozen Disorder in a Driven System
We investigate the effects of quenched disorder on the universal properties
of a randomly driven Ising lattice gas. The Hamiltonian fixed point of the pure
system becomes unstable in the presence of a quenched local bias, giving rise
to a new fixed point which controls a novel universality class. We determine
the associated scaling forms of correlation and response functions, quoting
critical exponents to two-loop order in an expansion around the upper critical

Electronic, vibrational, and thermodynamic properties of ZnS (zincblende and rocksalt structure)
We have measured the specific heat of zincblende ZnS for several isotopic
compositions and over a broad temperature range (3 to 1100 K). We have compared
these results with calculations based on ab initio electronic band structures,
performed using both LDA and GGA exchange- correlation functionals. We have
compared the lattice dynamics obtained in this manner with experimental data
and have calculated the one-phonon and two-phonon densities of states. We have
also calculated mode Grueneisen parameters at a number of high symmetry points
of the Brillouin zone. The electronic part of our calculations has been used to
investigate the effect of the 3d core electrons of zinc on the spin-orbit
splitting of the top valence bands. The effect of these core electrons on the
band structure of the rock salt modification of ZnS is also discussed.Comment: 33pages, 16 Figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Chandra Discovery of a 300 kpc X-ray Jet in the GPS Quasar PKS1127-145
We have discovered an X-ray jet with Chandra imaging of the z=1.187
radio-loud quasar PKS1127-145. In this paper we present the Chandra X-ray data,
follow-up VLA observations, and optical imaging using the HST WFPC2. The X-ray
jet contains 273+/-5 net counts in 27ksec and extends ~30 arcsec, from the
quasar core, corresponding to a minimum projected linear size of ~330/h_50 kpc.
The evaluation of the X-ray emission processes is complicated by the observed
offsets between X-ray and radio brightness peaks. We discuss the problems posed
by these observations to jet models. In addition, PKS1127-145 is a Giga-Hertz
Peaked Spectrum radio source, a member of the class of radio sources suspected
to be young or ``frustrated'' versions of FRI radio galaxies. However the
discovery of an X-ray and radio jet extending well outside the host galaxy of
PKS1127-145 suggests that activity in this and other GPS sources may be

Finite-size scaling analysis of the distributions of pseudo-critical temperatures in spin glasses
Using the results of large scale numerical simulations we study the
probability distribution of the pseudo critical temperature for the
three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass and for the fully connected
Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. We find that the behavior of our data is nicely

Multilingual gendered identities: female undergraduate students in London talk about heritage languages
In this paper I explore how a group of female university students, mostly British Asian and in their late teens and early twenties, perform femininities in talk about heritage languages. I argue that analysis of this talk reveals ways in which the participants enact ‘culturally intelligible’ gendered subject positions. This frequently involves negotiating the norms of ‘heteronormativity’, constituting femininity in terms of marriage, motherhood and maintenance of heritage culture and language, and ‘girl power’, constituting femininity in terms of youth, sassiness, glamour and individualism. For these young women, I ask whether higher education can become a site in which they have the opportunities to explore these identifications and examine other ways of imagining the self and what their stories suggest about ‘doing being’ a young British Asian woman in London
