Exploring a rheonomic system
A simple and illustrative rheonomic system is explored in the Lagrangian
formalism. The difference between Jacobi's integral and energy is highlighted.
A sharp contrast with remarks found in the literature is pointed out. The
non-conservative system possess a Lagrangian not explicitly dependent on time
and consequently there is a Jacobi's integral. The Lagrange undetermined
multiplier method is used as a complement to obtain a few interesting
conclusion

We investigate the structure of the scalar mesons and
within realistic meson-exchange models of the and
interactions. Starting from a modified version of the J\"ulich model for
scattering we perform an analysis of the pole structure of the
resulting scattering amplitude and find, in contrast to existing models, a
somewhat large mass for the ( MeV,
MeV). It is shown that our model provides a description of
data comparable in quality with those of
alternative models. Furthermore, the formalism developed for the
system is consistently extended to the interaction leading to a
description of the as a dynamically generated threshold effect
(which is therefore neither a conventional state nor a
bound state). Exploring the corresponding pole position the
is found to be rather broad ( MeV,
MeV). The experimentally observed smaller width results from the influence of

Painful os intermetatarseum is a very rare condition. Gruber et al. first described os intermetatarseum in 1877. This condition is usually asymptomatic. One should consider painful os intermetatarseum as being a possible cause of dorsal foot pain in athletes. Surgical excision of the os intermetatarseum should be considered for those patients failing conservative treatment. Here, a literature review of this condition is presented
Cultural factors that affected the spatial and temporal epidemiology of kuru
Kuru is a prion disease which became epidemic among the Fore and surrounding linguistic groups in Papua New Guinea, peaking in the late 1950s. It was transmitted during the transumption (endocannibalism) of dead family members at mortuary feasts. In this study, we aimed to explain the historical spread and the changing epidemiological patterns of kuru by analysing factors that affected its transmission. We also examined what cultural group principally determined a family’s behaviour during mortuary rituals. Our investigations showed that differences in mortuary practices were responsible for the initial pattern of the spread of kuru and the ultimate shape of the epidemic, and for subsequent spatio-temporal differences in the epidemiology of kuru. Before transumption stopped altogether, the South Fore continued to eat the bodies of those who had died of kuru, whereas other linguistic groups, sooner or later, stopped doing so. The linguistic group was the primary cultural group that determined behaviour but at linguistic boundaries the neighbouring group’s cultural practices were often adopted. The epidemiological changes were not explained by genetic differences, but genetic studies led to an understanding of genetic susceptibility to kuru and the selection pressure imposed by kuru, and provided new insights into human history and evolution
Oral vitamin B12 for patients suspected of subtle cobalamin deficiency: a multicentre pragmatic randomised controlled trial
BACKGROUND: Evidence regarding the effectiveness of oral vitamin B12 in patients with serum vitamin B12 levels between 125-200 pM/l is lacking. We compared the effectiveness of one-month oral vitamin B12 supplementation in patients with a subtle vitamin B12 deficiency to that of a placebo.
METHODS: This multicentre (13 general practices, two nursing homes, and one primary care center in western Switzerland), parallel, randomised, controlled, closed-label, observer-blind trial included 50 patients with serum vitamin B12 levels between 125-200 pM/l who were randomized to receive either oral vitamin B12 (1000 μg daily, N = 26) or placebo (N = 24) for four weeks. The institution's pharmacist used simple randomisation to generate a table and allocate treatments. The primary outcome was the change in serum methylmalonic acid (MMA) levels after one month of treatment. Secondary outcomes were changes in total homocysteine and serum vitamin B12 levels. Blood samples were centralised for analysis and adherence to treatment was verified by an electronic device (MEMS; Aardex Europe, Switzerland). Trial registration: ISRCTN 22063938.
RESULTS: Baseline characteristics and adherence to treatment were similar in both groups. After one month, one patient in the placebo group was lost to follow-up. Data were evaluated by intention-to-treat analysis. One month of vitamin B12 treatment (N = 26) lowered serum MMA levels by 0.13 μmol/l (95%CI 0.06-0.19) more than the change observed in the placebo group (N = 23). The number of patients needed to treat to detect a metabolic response in MMA after one month was 2.6 (95% CI 1.7-6.4). A significant change was observed for the B12 serum level, but not for the homocysteine level, hematocrit, or mean corpuscular volume. After three months without active treatment (at four months), significant differences in MMA levels were no longer detected.
CONCLUSIONS: Oral vitamin B12 treatment normalised the metabolic markers of vitamin B12 deficiency. However, a one-month daily treatment with 1000 μg oral vitamin B12 was not sufficient to normalise the deficiency markers for four months, and treatment had no effect on haematological signs of B12 deficiency
Determination of hadronic partial widths for scalar-isoscalar resonances f0(980), f0(1300), f0(1500), f_0(1750) and the broad state f0(1530^{+90}_{-250})
In the article of V.V. Anisovich et al., Yad. Fiz. 63, 1489 (2000), the
K-matrix solutions for the wave IJ^{PC}=00^{++} were obtained in the mass
region 450 - 1900 MeV where four resonances f0(980), f0(1300), f0(1500),
f0(1750) and the broad state f0(1530^{+90}_{-250}) are located. Based on these
solutions, we determine partial widths for scalar-isoscalar states decaying
into the channels pi-pi, K-anti K, eta-eta, eta-eta', pi-pi-pi-pi and
corresponding decay couplings.Comment: Some typos were correcte
Study of the reaction pbar p -> phi phi from 1.1 to 2.0 GeV/c
A study has been performed of the reaction pbar p -> 4K using in-flight
antiprotons from 1.1 to 2.0 GeV/c incident momentum interacting with a hydrogen
jet target. The reaction is dominated by the production of a pair of phi
mesons. The pbar p -> phi phi cross section rises sharply above threshold and
then falls continuously as a function of increasing antiproton momentum. The
overall magnitude of the cross section exceeds expectations from a simple
application of the OZI rule by two orders of magnitude. In a fine scan around
the xi/f_J(2230) resonance, no structure is observed. A limit is set for the
double branching ratio B(xi -> pbar p) * B(xi -> phi phi) < 6e-5 for a spin 2
resonance of M = 2.235 GeV and Width = 15 MeV.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables, Latex. To be published in Phys. Rev.
A new analysis of scattering from Roy and Steiner type equations
With the aim of generating new constraints on the OZI suppressed couplings of
chiral perturbation theory a set of six equations of the Roy and Steiner type
for the - and -waves of the scattering amplitudes is derived. The
range of validity and the multiplicity of the solutions are discussed. Precise
numerical solutions are obtained in the range E\lapprox 1 GeV which make use
as input, for the first time, of the most accurate experimental data available
at GeV for both and amplitudes.
Our main result is the determination of a narrow allowed region for the two
S-wave scattering lengths. Present experimental data below 1 GeV are found to
be in generally poor agreement with our results. A set of threshold expansion
parameters, as well as sub-threshold parameters are computed. For the latter,
matching with the SU(3) chiral expansion at NLO is performed.Comment: 45 pages, 17 figures. v2: New title, minor correction
Process pi p -> pi pi N at high energies and moderate momenta transferred to the nucleon and the determination of parameters of the f_0(980) and f_0(1300)
We present the results of simultaneous analysis of the S-wave pi pi-spectra
in the reactions pi^- p -> (pi^0 pi^0)_S n at p_{lab}=38 GeV/c (GAMS) and pi^-
p -> (pi^+ pi^-)_S n at p_{lab}=18 GeV/c (E852 Collaboration) at moderate
momenta transferred to the nucleon, |t| < 1.5 (GeV/c)^2. The t-distributions
are described by the reggeized pi- and a_1-exchanges provided by the leading
and daughter trajectories, while the M_{pi pi}-spectra are determined by a set
of scalar-isoscalar resonances. With M_{pi pi}-distributions averaged over
t-intervals, we have found several solutions given by different t-channel
exchange mechanisms at |t| ~ (0.5-1.5) (GeV/c)^2, with resonance parameters
close to each other. We conclude that despite a poor knowledge of the structure
of the t-exchange, the characteristics of resonances such as masses and widths
can be reliably determined using the processes under discussion. As to pole
positions, we have found (1031 +/- 10) - i(35 +/- 6) MeV for f_0(980) and (1315
+/- 20) - i(150 +/- 30) MeV for f_0(1300).Comment: 17 pages, RevTeX, 10 EPS figures, misprints correcte
Couplings of light I=0 scalar mesons to simple operators in the complex plane
The flavour and glue structure of the light scalar mesons in QCD are probed
by studying the couplings of the I=0 mesons and to the
operators , and to two photons. The Roy dispersive
representation for the amplitude is used to determine the
pole positions as well as the residues in the complex plane. On the real axis,
is constrained to solve the Roy equation together with elastic
unitarity up to the K\Kbar threshold leading to an improved description of
the . The problem of using a two-particle threshold as a matching
point is discussed. A simple relation is established between the coupling of a
scalar meson to an operator and the value of the related pion form-factor
computed at the resonance pole. Pion scalar form-factors as well as two-photon
partial-wave amplitudes are expressed as coupled-channel Omn\`es dispersive
representations. Subtraction constants are constrained by chiral symmetry and
experimental data. Comparison of our results for the couplings with
earlier determinations of the analogous couplings of the lightest I=1 and
scalar mesons are compatible with an assignment of the ,
, , into a nonet. Concerning the gluonic operator
we find a significant coupling to both the and the
