Beating patterns of filaments in viscoelastic fluids
Many swimming microorganisms, such as bacteria and sperm, use flexible
flagella to move through viscoelastic media in their natural environments. In
this paper we address the effects a viscoelastic fluid has on the motion and
beating patterns of elastic filaments. We treat both a passive filament which
is actuated at one end, and an active filament with bending forces arising from
internal motors distributed along its length. We describe how viscoelasticity
modifies the hydrodynamic forces exerted on the filaments, and how these
modified forces affect the beating patterns. We show how high viscosity of
purely viscous or viscoelastic solutions can lead to the experimentally
observed beating patterns of sperm flagella, in which motion is concentrated at
the distal end of the flagella
SSDSS IV MaNGA - Properties of AGN host galaxies
We present here the characterization of the main properties of a sample of 98
AGN host galaxies, both type-II and type-I, in comparison with those of about
2700 non-active galaxies observed by the MaNGA survey. We found that AGN hosts
are morphologically early-type or early-spirals. For a given morphology AGN
hosts are, in average, more massive, more compact, more central peaked and
rather pressurethan rotational-supported systems. We confirm previous results
indicating that AGN hosts are located in the intermediate/transition region
between star-forming and non-star-forming galaxies (i.e., the so-called green
valley), both in the ColorMagnitude and the star formation main sequence
diagrams. Taking into account their relative distribution in terms of the
stellar metallicity and oxygen gas abundance and a rough estimation of their
molecular gas content, we consider that these galaxies are in the process of
halting/quenching the star formation, in an actual transition between both
groups. The analysis of the radial distributions of the starformation rate,
specific star-formation rate, and molecular gas density shows that the
quenching happens from inside-out involving both a decrease of the efficiency
of the star formation and a deficit of molecular gas. All the intermediate
data-products used to derive the results of our analysis are distributed in a
database including the spatial distribution and average properties of the
stellar populations and ionized gas, published as a Sloan Digital Sky Survey

Strategy for the inversion of Hinode spectropolarimetric measurements in the quiet Sun
In this paper we propose an inversion strategy for the analysis of
spectropolarimetric measurements taken by {\em Hinode} in the quiet Sun. The
spectropolarimeter of the Solar Optical Telescope aboard {\em Hinode} records
the Stokes spectra of the \ion{Fe}{i} line pair at 630.2 nm with unprecendented
angular resolution, high spectral resolution, and high sensitivity. We discuss
the need to consider a {\em local} stray-light contamination to account for the
effects of telescope diffraction. The strategy is applied to observations of a
wide quiet Sun area at disk center. Using these data we examine the influence
of noise and initial guess models in the inversion results. Our analysis yields
the distributions of magnetic field strengths and stray-light factors. They
show that quiet Sun internetwork regions consist mainly of hG fields with

Pulsations and Long-Term Light Variability of Three Candidates to Protoplanetary Nebulae
We present new photometric data and analysis of the long-duration UBV
photoelectric observations for three candidates to protoplanetary objects -
F-supergiants with IR-excesses located at large galactic latitudes, IRAS
18095+2704, IRAS 19386+0155, and IRAS 19500-1709. All three stars have revealed
quasiperiodic low-amplitude variabilities caused by pulsations observed against
the long-term trends of brightnesses. For IRAS 18095+2704=V887 Her we have
found a pulsation period of 109 days and a linear trend of brightness under the
constant colours if being averaged over the year timescale. The light curve of
IRAS 19386+0155=V1648 Aql over 2000-2008 can be approximated by a wave with a
main period of 102 days which is modulated by close frequency, with a period of
98 days, that results in brightness oscillations with a variable amplitude.
V1648 Aql has also shown synchronous reddening together with a persistent rise
of brightness in the V-band. IRAS 19500-1709=V5112 Sgr experiences irregular
pulsations with the periods of 39 and 47 days. The long-term component of the

Lamin A Δexon9 mutation leads to telomere and chromatin defects but not genomic instability
Over 300 mutations in the LMNA gene, encoding A-type lamins, are associated with 15 human degenerative disorders and premature aging syndromes. Although genomic instability seems to contribute to the pathophysiology of some laminopathies, there is limited information about what mutations cause genomic instability and by which molecular mechanisms. Mouse embryonic fibroblasts depleted of A-type lamins or expressing mutants lacking exons 8–11 (Lmna(Δ8–11/Δ8–11)) exhibit alterations in telomere biology and DNA repair caused by cathepsin L-mediated degradation of 53BP1 and reduced expression of BRCA1 and RAD51. Thus, a region encompassing exons 8–11 seems essential for genome integrity. Given that deletion of lamin A exon 9 in the mouse (Lmna(Δ9/Δ9)) results in a progeria phenotype, we tested if this domain is important for genome integrity. Lmna(Δ9/Δ9) MEFs exhibit telomere shortening and heterochromatin alterations but do not activate cathepsin L-mediated degradation of 53BP1 and maintain expression of BRCA1 and RAD51. Accordingly, Lmna(Δ9/Δ9) MEFs do not present genomic instability, and expression of mutant lamin A Δexon9 in lamin-depleted cells restores DNA repair factors levels and partially rescues nuclear abnormalities. These data reveal that the domain encoded by exon 9 is important to maintain telomere homeostasis and heterochromatin structure but does not play a role in DNA repair, thus pointing to other exons in the lamin A tail as responsible for the genomic instability phenotype in Lmna(Δ8–11/Δ8–11) mice. Our study also suggests that the levels of DNA repair factors 53BP1, BRCA1 and RAD51 could potentially serve as biomarkers to identify laminopathies that present with genomic instability
Nonequilibrium spectral diffusion due to laser heating in stimulated photon echo spectroscopy of low temperature glasses
A quantitative theory is developed, which accounts for heating artifacts in
three-pulse photon echo (3PE) experiments. The heat diffusion equation is
solved and the average value of the temperature in the focal volume of the
laser is determined as a function of the 3PE waiting time. This temperature is
used in the framework of nonequilibrium spectral diffusion theory to calculate
the effective homogeneous linewidth of an ensemble of probe molecules embedded
in an amorphous host. The theory fits recently observed plateaus and bumps
without introducing a gap in the distribution function of flip rates of the
two-level systems or any other major modification of the standard tunneling

Discovery of the Optical Transient of the Gamma Ray Burst 990308
The optical transient of the faint Gamma Ray Burst 990308 was detected by the
QUEST camera on the Venezuelan 1-m Schmidt telescope starting 3.28 hours after
the burst. Our photometry gives , , , and for times ranging from 3.28 to 3.47
hours after the burst. The colors correspond to a spectral slope of close to
. Within the standard synchrotron fireball model,
this requires that the external medium be less dense than , the
electrons contain of the shock energy, and the magnetic field energy
must be less than 24% of the energy in the electrons for normal interstellar or
circumstellar densities. We also report upper limits of at 132 s
(with LOTIS), from 132-1029s (with LOTIS), at 28.2 min
(with Super-LOTIS), and a 8.5 GHz flux of at 110 days (with the
Very Large Array). WIYN 3.5-m and Keck 10-m telescopes reveal this location to
be empty of any host galaxy to and . The lack of a host
galaxy likely implies that it is either substantially subluminous or more

Why are we not flooded by involuntary thoughts about the past and future? Testing the cognitive inhibition dependency hypothesis
© The Author(s) 2018In everyday life, involuntary thoughts about future plans and events occur as often as involuntary thoughts about the past. However, compared to involuntary autobiographical memories (IAMs), such episodic involuntary future thoughts (IFTs) have become a focus of study only recently. The aim of the present investigation was to examine why we are not constantly flooded by IFTs and IAMs given that they are often triggered by incidental cues while performing undemanding activities. One possibility is that activated thoughts are suppressed by the inhibitory control mechanism, and therefore depleting inhibitory control should enhance the frequency of both IFTs and IAMs. We report an experiment with a between-subjects design, in which participants in the depleted inhibition condition performed a 60-min high-conflict Stroop task before completing a laboratory vigilance task measuring the frequency of IFTs and IAMs. Participants in the intact inhibition condition performed a version of the Stroop task that did not deplete inhibitory control. To control for physical and mental fatigue resulting from performing the 60-min Stroop tasks in experimental conditions, participants in the control condition completed only the vigilance task. Contrary to predictions, the number of IFTs and IAMs reported during the vigilance task, using the probe-caught method, did not differ across conditions. However, manipulation checks showed that participants’ inhibitory resources were reduced in the depleted inhibition condition, and participants were more tired in the experimental than in the control conditions. These initial findings suggest that neither inhibitory control nor physical and mental fatigue affect the frequency of IFTs and IAMs.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Measurements of 12C(→γ,pp) photon asymmetries for Eγ= 200–450 MeV
The 12C (→γ ,pp) reaction has been studied in the photon energy range 200-450 MeV at the Mainz microtron MAMI-C, where linearly polarised photons were energy-tagged using the Glasgow-Mainz Tagged Photon Spectrometer and protons were detected in the Crystal Ball detector. The photon asymmetry Σ has been measured over a wider Eγ range than previous measurements. The strongest asymmetries were found at low missing energies where direct emission of nucleon pairs is expected. Cuts on the difference in azimuthal angles of the two ejected protons increased the magnitude of the observed asymmetries. At low missing energies the Σ data exhibit a strong angular dependence, similar to deuteron photodisintegration
What are the living conditions and health status of those who don't report their migration status? a population-based study in Chile
BACKGROUND: Undocumented immigrants are likely to be missing from population databases, making it impossible to identify an accurate sampling frame in migration research. No population-based data has been collected in Chile regarding the living conditions and health status of undocumented immigrants. However, the CASEN survey (Caracterizacion Socio- Economica Nacional) asked about migration status in Chile for the first time in 2006 and provides an opportunity to set the base for future analysis of available migration data. We explored the living conditions and health of self-reported immigrants and respondents who preferred not to report their migration status in this survey. METHODS: Cross-sectional secondary analysis of CASEN survey in Chile in 2006. Outcomes: any disability, illness/accident, hospitalization/surgery, cancer/chronic condition (all binary variables); and the number of medical/emergency attentions received (count variables). Covariates: Demographics (age, sex, marital status, urban/rural, ethnicity), socioeconomic status (education level, employment status and household income), and material standard of living (overcrowding, sanitation, housing quality). Weighted regression models were estimated for each health outcome, crude and adjusted by sets of covariates, in STATA 10.0. RESULTS: About 1% of the total sample reported being immigrants and 0.7% preferred not to report their migration status (Migration Status - Missing Values; MS-MV). The MS-MV lived in more deprived conditions and reported a higher rate of health problems than immigrants. Some gender differences were observed by health status among immigrants and the MS-MV but they were not statistically significant. Regressions indicated that age, sex, SES and material factors consistently affected MS-MVs’ chance of presenting poor health and these patterns were different to those found among immigrants. Great heterogeneity in both the MS-MV and the immigrants, as indicated by wide confidence intervals, prevented the identification of other significantly associated covariates. CONCLUSION: This is the first study to look at the living conditions and health of those that preferred not to respond their migration status in Chile. Respondents that do not report their migration status are vulnerable to poor health and may represent undocumented immigrants. Surveys that fail to identify these people are likely to misrepresent the experiences of immigrants and further quantitative and qualitative research is urgently required
