    Evaluation of micronucleus frequency in oral exfoliated buccal mucosa cells of smokers and tobacco chewers: a comparative study

    Background: Oral cancer is one of the tenth most common cancers in the world and constitutes the third most important group of malignancies in India. Majority of these cancers are diagnosed at an advanced stage resulting in poor prognosis and survival rates among patients. Hence early diagnosis of oral cancers seems to be the need of the hour. Analysis of exfoliated buccal cell micronuclei (MN) is a sensitive method of monitoring genetic damage. The present study aims to compare the frequency of micronucleus in tobacco chewers and smokers and thus evaluate the genotoxic potential of these habits.Methods: The study was conducted on 60 subjects, divided into 3 groups each of 20 subjects. Group 1: with history of chewing tobacco, group 2: with history of chewing tobacco and smoking, group 3: healthy subjects without any habits as controls. Oral exfoliated cells were obtained from buccal mucosa of the subjects, 2 slides were prepared from each subject stained with Giemsa and H&E stain respectively. Atleast 1000 cells were examined for each subject and micronuclei frequency was scored according to criteria of Tolbert et al.Results: The mean number of micronuclei was 18.5±9.5 in tobacco chewers, 19.1±9.2 in chewers with smoking habit and 8.2±5.6 in controls. Bonferroni multiple comparisons amongst these three groups showed the mean difference of micronuclei to be highly significant when chewers and chewers with smoking habit were compared to controls. Similarly based on the duration of addiction, a highly significant difference was noted in no. of micronucleated cells in subjects addicted to tobacco for more than 15 years.Conclusions: Tobacco can cause and increase the rate of nuclear anomalies in both smoking and smokeless forms. Thus oral mucosal micronuclei frequency can be used as a marker of epithelial carcinogenic progression.

    A comparison of platelet count in severe preeclampsia, mild preeclampsia and normal pregnancy

    Background: Preeclampsia, the most common of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy is an idiopathic multisystem disorder affecting 2 – 10% of all pregnancies and together they form one member of the deadly triad, along with hemorrhage and infection that contribute greatly to the maternal morbidity and mortality rates. The identification of this clinical entity and effective management play a significant role in the outcome of pregnancy. Platelet count is emphasized to play a significant role in hemostasis mechanism of preeclampsia and the degree of thrombocytopenia increases with severity of preeclampsia. This study was conducted to find correlation of platelet count in severe preeclampsia, mild preeclampsia and normal subjects.Methods: Total 140 subjects, 70 control and 70 cases were enrolled in the study. Samples for platelet count were collected and estimation was carried out by the auto-analyzers. The statistical evaluation is done using SPSS version 22 along with Anova and student t-test.Results: The mean platelet count was significantly lower (p <0.05) in mild and severe preeclampsia than that in the normal pregnancy. Decreased platelet count in severe preeclampsia was significant compared to that in mild preeclampsia.Conclusions: The frequency of thrombocytopenia was found to be directly related with the severity of disease, so platelet count can be used as a simple and cost effective tool to monitor the progression of preeclampsia, thereby preventing complications to develop during the gestational period

    A Staggered Scheme for the Compressible Fluctuating Hydrodynamics of Multispecies Fluid Mixtures

    We present a numerical formulation for the solution of non-isothermal, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations with thermal fluctuations to describe mesoscale transport phenomena in multispecies fluid mixtures. The novelty of our numerical method is the use of staggered grid momenta along with a finite volume discretization of the thermodynamic variables to solve the resulting stochastic partial differential equations. The key advantages of the numerical scheme are significantly simplified and compact discretization of the diffusive and stochastic momentum fluxes, and an unambiguous prescription of boundary conditions involving pressure. The staggered grid scheme more accurately reproduces the equilibrium static structure factor of hydrodynamic fluctuations in gas mixtures compared to a collocated scheme described previously in Balakrishnan et al., Phys. Rev. E 89:013017, 2014. The numerical method is tested for ideal noble gases mixtures under various nonequilibrium conditions, such as applied thermal and concentration gradients, to assess the role of cross-diffusion effects, such as Soret and Dufour, on the long-ranged correlations of hydrodynamic fluctuations, which are also more accurately reproduced compared to the collocated scheme. We numerically study giant nonequilibrium fluctuations driven by concentration gradients, and fluctuation-driven Rayleigh-Taylor instability in gas mixtures. Wherever applicable, excellent agreement is observed with theory and measurements from the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 9 pages supplementary materia

    Fractal dimensions of jammed packings with power-law particle size distributions in two and three dimensions

    Static structure factors are computed for large-scale, mechanically stable, jammed packings of frictionless spheres (three dimensions) and disks (two dimensions) with broad, power-law size dispersity characterized by the exponent −β-\beta. The static structure factor exhibits diverging power-law behavior for small wavenumbers, allowing us to identify a structural fractal dimension, dfd_f. In three dimensions, df≈2.0d_f \approx 2.0 for 2.5≤β≤3.82.5 \le \beta \le 3.8 , such that each of the structure factors can be collapsed onto a universal curve. In two dimensions, we instead find 1.0≲df≲1.341.0 \lesssim d_f \lesssim 1.34 for 2.1≤β≤2.92.1 \le \beta \le 2.9 . Furthermore, we show that the fractal behavior persists when rattler particles are removed, indicating that the long wavelength structural properties of the packings are controlled by the large particle backbone conferring mechanical rigidity to the system. A numerical scheme for computing structure factors for triclinic unit cells is presented and employed to analyze the jammed packings.Comment: 5 figures, 1 tabl

    A STUDY OF OUTCOME OF ROSE K LENSES IN KERATOCONUS

    Background:&nbsp;Cornea is affected by several distinct disorders that produce marked thinning without significant inflammation. They are keratoconus, posterior keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, and keratoglobus. keratoconus and posterior keratoconus produces central and inferior thinning with ectasia.&nbsp;Materials and Methods: All patients of keratoconus in age group 15 to 60 years at various stages of progression were included this was a prospective study, 20 Eyes of 15 patients of keratoconus in age group of 15 to 60 years at various stages of progression were included in the study. Visual acuity, slit lamp Biomicroscopy was done, corneal topography and Fundus examination was done by both direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy with full dilatation when possible.&nbsp;Results: Subjective score of pre rose k eyes when compared to post rose k lens eye was highly significant, which signifies that the same patient was highly satisfied after wearing rose k lens.&nbsp;Conclusion: Present study observed that, Rose K lenses improved patient's overall quality of life in moderate and advance cases of keratoconus.
