complete gapping of a portion of the Fermi surface (FS), inferred from a change
in scattering and the competition between the HO state and superconductivity

Trait Correlations in the Genomics Era
© 2017 Elsevier Ltd Thinking about the evolutionary causes and consequences of trait correlations has been dominated by quantitative genetics theory that is focused on hypothetical loci. Since this theory was initially developed, technology has enabled the identification of specific genetic variants that contribute to trait correlations. Here, we review studies of the genetic basis of trait correlations to ask: What has this new information taught us? We find that causal variants can be pleiotropic and/or linked in different ways, indicating that pleiotropy and linkage are not alternative genetic mechanisms. Further, many trait correlations have a polygenic basis, suggesting that both pleiotropy and linkage likely contribute. We discuss implications of these findings for the evolutionary causes and consequences of trait correlations
Variability in the anterior extralaryngeal branch of the recurrent laryngeal nerve: clinical implications
Background: This study aimed to identify the anterior and posterior extralaryngeal branches (AELB, PELB) of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), measure these branches when present, and determine relationships between gender, sidedness and neck length.
Materials and methods: Dissection was completed to level of the thyroid on 45 cadavers. The course of the RLN was then traced superiorly from its entry into the neck. Careful reflection of the thyroid and dissection of the lateral thyroid ligament permitted visualisation of the full course of the nerve. If extralaryngeal branching (ELB) was present, measurements were taken from the point of bifurcation of the RLN to the point of laryngeal entry through the cricothyroid membrane. Neck measurements, from the spinous process of C7 to the superior nuchal line, were taken. Gender of the specimen was noted. Data was analysed in SPSS.
Results: Extralaryngeal branching was found in 77.78% of our sample, 77.14% on the left and 54.29% on the right. A significant difference was found between AELB length on the left and right, indicating that the left branch will be longer than the right when present. A significant difference in neck length between those with and without ELB was also found, indicating that people with longer necks more often display ELB. Neither neck length and AELB length, nor gender and AELB length were strongly correlated in this sample.
Conclusions: Extralaryngeal branching can occur in all populations, but there are definite trends in its incidence and length. Surgeons should be aware of these trends before operating on patients

Visible-light-mediated selective arylation of cysteine in batch and flow
A mild visible-light-mediated strategy for cysteine arylation is presented. The method relies on the use of eosin Y as a metal-free photocatalyst and aryldiazonium salts as arylating agents. The reaction can be significantly accelerated in a microflow reactor, whilst allowing the insitu formation of the required diazonium salts. The batch and flow protocol described herein can be applied to obtain a broad series of arylated cysteine derivatives and arylated cysteine-containing dipeptides. Moreover, the method was applied to the chemoselective arylation of a model peptide in biocompatible reaction conditions (room temperature, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) buffer) within a short reaction time
Myocardial Scar Characterization and Future Ventricular Arrhythmia in Patients With Ischemic Cardiomyopathy and an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator
Background: Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy is associated with several deleterious effects, which can be reduced by antiarrhythmic drugs or catheter ablation. However, it is largely unknown which patients might benefit from these therapies. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether myocardial scar characterization improves risk stratification for ventricular arrhythmia (VA) occurrence in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy and an ICD.Methods: In this study, 82 patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy who received an ICD were enrolled retrospectively. Late gadolinium enhancement cardiac magnetic resonance (LGE-CMR) images were analyzed using an investigational software tool to obtain quantitative data regarding the total scar, core, and border zone (BZ). Data regarding the QRS complex was obtained from electrocardiography (ECG). The primary endpoint was appropriate ICD therapy.Results: During a median follow-up duration of 3.98 years [interquartile range (IQR) 2.89–5.14 years], appropriate therapy occurred in 24 (29.3%) patients. Patients with appropriate ICD therapy had a significantly larger total scar mass [60.0 (IQR 41.2–73.4) vs. 43.3 (IQR 31.2–61.2) g; P = 0.009] and BZ mass [32.9 (IQR 26.9–42.4) vs. 24.5 (IQR 18.8–32.5) g; P = 0.001] than those without appropriate therapy. In multivariable Cox regression analyses, total scar mass [hazard ratio (HR) 1.02 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.00–1.04]; P = 0.014] and BZ mass (HR 1.04 [95% CI 1.01–1.07]; P = 0.009) independently predicted appropriate ICD therapy. Core mass and the QRS complex, however, were not significantly associated with the primary endpoint.Conclusion: LGE-CMR-based, but not ECG-based myocardial scar characterization improves risk stratification for VA occurrence in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy who received an ICD
Clindamycin-Benzoyl Peroxide Gel Compared with Clindamycin Lotion for Hidradenitis Suppurativa:A Randomized Controlled Assessor-Blinded Intra-Patient Pilot Study
Background: Antibiotic resistance is a major concern, especially in hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). However, antibiotics form a cornerstone in its treatment. Topical clindamycin is known to cause bacterial resistance but is still advised as monotherapy for the treatment of mild to moderate HS. Methods: This is a randomized, controlled, assessor-blinded, intra-patient pilot trial to compare the clinical efficacy of clindamycin-benzoyl peroxide gel with clindamycin lotion in patients with mild to moderate HS. Two contralateral body sites were randomized for treatment in each patient. The primary outcome was the difference in the International Hidradenitis Suppurativa Severity Score (IHS4) between the two groups after 12 weeks. Secondary objectives were feasibility of the intra-patient design, efficacy within treatment groups, effect on HS pain, HS itch, patient satisfaction, antibiotic resistance, and the prolonged efficacy after 16 weeks. Results: Ten patients were included, resulting in two groups of 10 treated body sites. No significant differences were found between the two groups for all measurements after 12 or 16 weeks, while both therapies led to an improvement in the IHS4, pain, and itch scores. A significant decrease was observed in the IHS4 for both the clindamycin lotion (-1.5; p < 0.05) and the clindamycin-benzoyl peroxide gel (-2; p < 0.01) after 16 weeks, and the pain scores were reduced from 7 to 2.5, p < 0.01 and 6.5 to 3, p = 0.03, respectively. Using the IHS4-55, we identified 50% of patients as responders in both groups after 12 weeks. The intra-patient design, however, unexpectedly appeared to hinder the inclusion of patients. Conclusion: Clindamycin-benzoyl peroxide gel showed favorable clinical efficacy results, similar to clindamycin lotion, suggesting that it could replace clindamycin lotion in the treatment of mild to moderate HS and to prevent antibiotic resistance. A larger controlled trial is needed to validate these results.</p
