Crossover Phenomena in the One-Dimensional SU(4) Spin-Orbit Model under Magnetic Fields
We study the one-dimensional SU(4) exchange model under magnetic fields,
which is the simplest effective Hamiltonian in order to investigate the quantum
fluctuations concerned with the orbital degrees of freedom in coupled
spin-orbit systems. The Bethe ansatz approaches and numerical calculations
using the density matrix renormalization group method are employed. The main
concern of the paper is how the system changes from the SU(4) to the SU(2)
symmetric limit as the magnetic field is increased. For this model the
conformal field theory predicts an usual behavior: there is a jump of the
critical exponents just before the SU(2) limit. For a finite-size system,
however, the orbital-orbital correlation functions approach continuously to the
SU(2) limit after interesting crossover phenomena. The crossover takes place in
the magnetization range of 1/3 1/2 for the system with 72 sites studied

Anomalous elastic softening of SmRu_{4}P_{12} under high pressure
The filled skutterudite compound SmRu_4P_{12} undergoes a complex evolution
from a paramagnetic metal (phase I) to a probable multipolar ordering insulator
(phase II) at T_{MI} = 16.5 K, then to a magnetically ordered phase (phase III)
at T_{N} = 14 K. Elastic properties under hydrostatic pressures were
investigated to study the nature of the ordering phases. We found that distinct
elastic softening above T_{MI} is induced by pressure, giving evidence of
quadrupole degeneracy of the ground state in the crystalline electric field. It
also suggests that quadrupole moment may be one of the order parameters below
T_{MI} under pressure. Strangely, the largest degree of softening is found in
the transverse elastic constant C_{T} at around 0.5-0.6 GPa, presumably having
relevancy to the competing and very different Gruneisen parameters \Omega of
T_{MI} and T_{N}. Interplay between the two phase transitions is also verified
by the rapid increase of T_{MI} under pressure with a considerably large \Omega
of 9. Our results can be understood on the basis of the proposed octupole
scenario for SmRu_4P_{12}.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Elastic Properties and Magnetic Phase Diagrams of Dense Kondo Compound Ce0.75La0.25B6
We have investigated the elastic properties of the cubic dense Kondo compound
Ce0.75La0.25B6 by means of ultrasonic measurements. We have obtained magnetic
fields vs temperatures (H-T) phase diagrams under magnetic fields along the
crystallographic [001], [110] and [111] axes. An ordered phase IV showing the
elastic softening of c44 locates in low temperature region between 1.6 and 1.1
K below 0.7 T in all field directions. The phase IV shows an isotropic nature
with regard to the field directions, while the antiferro-magnetic phase III
shows an anisotropic character. A remarkable softening of c44 and a spontaneous
trigonal distortion εyz+εzx+εxy recently reported by Akatsu et
al. [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 72 (2003) 205] in the phase IV favor a ferro-quadrupole
(FQ) moment of Oyz+Ozx+Oxy induced by an octupole ordering.Comment: 9 figures, Strongly Correlated Electron
Multipolar Interactions in the Anderson Lattice with Orbital Degeneracy
Microscopic investigation is performed for intersite multipolar interactions
in the orbitally degenerate Anderson lattice, with CeB taken as an
exemplary target. In addition to the intermediate state,
Hund's-rule ground states are included as intermediate states for the
interactions. The conduction-band states are taken as plane waves and the
hybridization as spherically symmetric. The spatial dependences of multipolar
interactions are given by the relative weight of partial wave components along
the pair of sites. It is clarified how the the anisotropy arises in the
interactions depending on the orbital degeneracy and the spatial configuration.
The stability of the antiferro-quadrupole order in the phase II of
CeB is consistent with our model. Moreover, the pseudo-dipole interactions
follow a tendency required by the phenomenological model for the phase III.Comment: 30 pages, 4 figure
Theory of Excitonic States in CaB6
We study the excitonic states in CaB6 in terms of the Ginzburg-Landau theory.
By minimizing the free energy and by comparing with experimental results, we
identify two possible ground states with exciton condensation. They both break
time-reversal and inversion symmetries. This leads to various magnetic and
optical properties. As for magnetic properties, it is expected to be an
antiferromagnet, and its spin structure is predicted. It will exhibit the
magnetoelectric effect, and observed novel ferromagnetism in doped samples and
in thin-film and powder samples can arise from this effect. Interesting optical
phenomena such as the nonreciprocal optical effect and the second harmonic
generation are predicted. Their measurement for CaB6 will clarify whether
exciton condensation occurs or not and which of the two states is realized.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figure
Ginzburg-Landau functional for nearly antiferromagnetic perfect and disordered Kondo lattices
Interplay between Kondo effect and trends to antiferromagnetic and spin glass
ordering in perfect and disordered bipartite Kondo lattices is considered.
Ginzburg-Landau equation is derived from the microscopic effective action
written in three mode representation (Kondo screening, antiferromagnetic
correlations and spin liquid correlations). The problem of local constraint is
resolved by means of Popov-Fedotov representation for localized spin operators.
It is shown that the Kondo screening enhances the trend to a spin liquid
crossover and suppresses antiferromagnetic ordering in perfect Kondo lattices
and spin glass ordering in doped Kondo lattices. The modified Doniach's diagram
is constructed, and possibilities of going beyond the mean field approximation

The quadrupolar ordering in CeB_6 is explained in terms of the electrostatic
interaction of quadrupolar moments arranged into a simple cubic lattice. The
representation of magnetic and quadrupolar moments by means of quasispins of
two kinds is employed. A linear increase of the quadrupolar transition
temperature T_Q(H) with applied magnetic field and its further re-entrance are
described using a generalized spherical model which is well adjusted to a
particular problem of the quadrupolar ordering in CeB_6. The theory naturally
explains the growing specific heat jump at T_Q(H) with increasing magnetic
field. The role of the quadrupolar ordering in the formation of the magnetic
ordering, as well as the possible critical experiments and applications to

Thermopower of CexR1-xB6 (R=La, Pr and Nd)
The thermopower, S, of CexR1-xB6 (R=La, Pr, Nd) was investigated. S with a
positive sign shows a typical behavior observed in the Ce Kondo system, an
increase with decreasing temperature at high temperatures and a maximum at low
temperatures. The S values of all the systems at high temperatures are roughly
linearly dependent on the Ce concentration, indicating the conservation of the
single-impurity character of the Kondo effect in a wide x range. However, the
maximum value of S, S_max, and the temperature, T_max, at which S_max is
observed exhibit different x dependences between CexLa1-xB6 and CexR1-xB6
(R=Pr, Nd). In CexLa1-xB6, T_max, which is ~8 K in CeB6, decreases with
decreasing x and converges to ~1 K in a very dilute alloy and S_max shows an
increase below x ~ 0.1 after decreasing with decreasing x. In CexR1-xB6 (R=Pr,
Nd), T_max shows a weak x dependence but S_max shows a roughly linear decrease
in x. These results are discussed from the standpoint of the chemical pressure
effect and the Ce-Ce interaction. S in the long-range ordered phase shows very
different behavior between CexPr1-xB6 and CexNd1-xB6.Comment: PDF file, 7 pages with 9 figures, accepted for publicatio
