Trends Prediction Using Social Diffusion Models
The importance of the ability of predict trends in social media has been
growing rapidly in the past few years with the growing dominance of social
media in our everyday's life. Whereas many works focus on the detection of
anomalies in networks, there exist little theoretical work on the prediction of
the likelihood of anomalous network pattern to globally spread and become
"trends". In this work we present an analytic model the social diffusion
dynamics of spreading network patterns. Our proposed method is based on
information diffusion models, and is capable of predicting future trends based
on the analysis of past social interactions between the community's members. We
present an analytic lower bound for the probability that emerging trends would
successful spread through the network. We demonstrate our model using two
comprehensive social datasets - the "Friends and Family" experiment that was
held in MIT for over a year, where the complete activity of 140 users was
analyzed, and a financial dataset containing the complete activities of over
1.5 million members of the "eToro" social trading community.Comment: 6 Pages + Appendi
Hiram Martin Chittenden: His Public Career
The life of Hiram Martin Chittenden illustrates the work of one of the most influential federal agencies that has shaped the American West—the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. As a member of the Corps Chittenden was assigned to Yellowstone Park, where he completed the plan for tourist roads. His work there convinced powerful congressmen to increase greatly the appropriations for the park.
In this well-researched biography, Mr. Dodds shows that Chittenden was, in addition to his Corps duties, one of the first advocates of multiple-purpose resource use, a champion of scientific accuracy in forming conservation policies, the first president of the Seattle Port Commission, and the author of several books, including his monumental History of the American Fur Trade and a guidebook to Yellowstone Park that is still in print.

Complement component C4-like protein in Atlantic cod (<i>Gadus morhua</i> L.) - Detection in ontogeny and identification of post-translational deimination in serum and extracellular vesicles
The complement system is a critical part of teleost immune defences, with complement component C4 forming part of the classical and lectin pathways. Cod C4-like protein was isolated from plasma, specific antibodies generated and C4-like protein was assessed in cod sera, mucus and in extracellular vesicles (EVs) from serum and mucus. Higher levels of C4-like protein were detected in serum- than mucus-derived EVs. Post-translational deimination, caused by conversion of arginine into citrulline, can affect protein structure and function. Here we detected deiminated forms of C4-like protein in cod serum and at lower levels in mucus. C4-like protein was also found in deiminated form at low levels in EVs from both serum and mucus. C4-like protein was assessed by immunohistochemistry in cod larvae and detected in a range of organs including in liver, kidney, gut, muscle, skin and mucus, as well as in neuronal tissues of the brain, spinal cord and eye. This abundance of C4-like protein during early development may indicate roles in tissue remodelling, in addition to immune defences. The presence of deiminated C4-like protein in serum and mucosa, as well as in EVs, may suggest C4 protein moonlighting via post-translational deimination

Extracellular Vesicles from Cod (<i>Gadus morhua</i> L.) Mucus contain Innate Immune Factors and Deiminated Protein Cargo
Extracellular vesicles are released from cells and participate in cell communication via transfer of protein and genetic cargo derived from the parent cells. EVs play roles in normal physiology and immunity and are also linked to various pathological processes. Peptidylarginine deiminases (PADs) are phylogenetically conserved enzymes with physiological and pathophysiological roles. PADs cause post-translational protein deimination, resulting in structural and, in some cases, functional changes in target proteins and are also linked to EV biogenesis. This study describes for the first time EVs isolated from cod mucosa. Mucosal EVs were characterised by electron microscopy, nanoparticle tracking analysis and EV-specific surface markers. Cod mucosal EVs were found to carry PAD, complement component C3 and C-reactive proteins. C3 was found to be deiminated in both whole mucus and mucosal EVs, with some differences, and further 6 deiminated immune and cytoskeletal proteins were identified in EVs by LC-MS/MS analysis. As mucosal surfaces of teleost fish reflect human mucosal surfaces, these findings may provide useful insights into roles of EVs in mucosal immunity throughout phylogeny

Geometry of River Networks II: Distributions of Component Size and Number
The structure of a river network may be seen as a discrete set of nested
sub-networks built out of individual stream segments. These network components
are assigned an integral stream order via a hierarchical and discrete ordering
method. Exponential relationships, known as Horton's laws, between stream order
and ensemble-averaged quantities pertaining to network components are observed.
We extend these observations to incorporate fluctuations and all higher moments
by developing functional relationships between distributions. The relationships
determined are drawn from a combination of theoretical analysis, analysis of
real river networks including the Mississippi, Amazon and Nile, and numerical
simulations on a model of directed, random networks. Underlying distributions
of stream segment lengths are identified as exponential. Combinations of these
distributions form single-humped distributions with exponential tails, the sums
of which are in turn shown to give power law distributions of stream lengths.
Distributions of basin area and stream segment frequency are also addressed.
The calculations identify a single length-scale as a measure of size
fluctuations in network components. This article is the second in a series of

Retrospective analysis of fish community change during a half-century of landuse and streamflow changes.
Ecological thresholds that lead to alternative community states can be exceeded through gradual perturbation or as a result of sudden disturbance. Many Great Plains streams have experienced dramatic changes in their hydrologic regime resulting from water and landuse changes that began as early
as 1880. These changes, combined with the presence of many invasive species, have substantially altered the fish communities in this area. We quantified temporal changes in fish communities in 3 large river basins in relation to putative anthropogenic stressors, including increased sediment supply derived from row-crop agriculture (beginning in 1880), habitat fragmentation caused by reservoir construction
(beginning in the 1950s), and reduced discharge caused by groundwater withdrawal (beginning in the 1960s). We hypothesized that these abiotic regime shifts, coupled with species invasions, would shift the
system from a fish community dominated by lotic (flowing water) species to one dominated by lentic (still water) species. Further, we predicted that the timing and intensity of community change would vary
across basins that experienced different types and levels of stressors. Restructuring of fish communities across the 3 river basins was driven primarily by similar increases in lentic species, with only a few
declines in several large-river species. Current fish communities in these basins share ,50% of the species recorded in historic collections, and these differences were driven by species extirpations and invasions. The greatest levels of community divergence over time occurred in western Kansas basins that experienced the most intense groundwater withdrawals and fragmentation by reservoirs. An alarming result from this analysis was the recent (after 1991) expansion of several invasive species in the Arkansas and lower Kansas
River basins and the decline or extirpation of several native species where flow regimes are less heavily altered. Accelerating changes in the biota and habitat identified by our retrospective analysis highlight
potential complications for restoring the habitat and native fish communities to a previous state
