Quaero@H1: An Interface to High-pT HERA Event Data

    Get PDF
Distributions from high-pT HERA event data analyzed in a general search for new physics at H1 have been incorporated into Quaero, an algorithm designed to automate tests of specific hypotheses with high energy collider data. The use of Quaero@H1 to search for leptoquarks, R-parity violating supersymmetry, and excited quarks provides examples to develop intuition for the algorithm's performance.Comment: Submitted to Eur. Stochastic stability for a model representing the intake manifold pressure of an automotive engine

    Get PDF
The paper presents conditions to assure stochastic stability for a nonlinear model. The proposed model is used to represent the input-output dynamics of the angle of aperture of the throttle valve (input) and the manifold absolute pressure (output) in an automotive spark-ignition engine. The automotive model is second moment stable, as stated by the theoretical result—data collected from real-time experiments supports this finding.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

An Analysis of Four-quark Energies in SU(2) Lattice Monte Carlo using the Flux-tube Symmetry:

Energies of four-quark systems calculated by the static quenched SU(2) lattice Monte Carlo method are analyzed in 2×22\times 2 bases for square, rectangle, tilted rectangle, linear and quadrilateral geometry configurations and in 3×33\times 3 bases for a non-planar geometry configuration. For small interquark distances, a lattice effect is taken into account by considering perimeter dependent terms which are characterized by the cubic symmetry. It is then found that a parameter ff - that can be identified as a gluon field overlap factor - is rather well described by the form exp([bsEA+bsFP])exp(-[b_sE{\cal A}+\sqrt{b_s}F{\cal P}]), where A{\cal A} and P{\cal P} are the area and perimeter mainly defined by the positions of the four quarks, bsb_s is the string constant in the 2-quark potentials and E,FE,F are constants.Comment: (19 pages of Latex - 1 page of figures not included - sent on request). Monetary policy as a source of uncertainty

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a model in which control variations induce an increase in the uncertainty of the system. The aim of our paper is to provide a stochastic theoretical model that can be used to explain under which uncertainty conditions monetary policy rules should be less or more aggressive, or, simply, applied or not.

    Active swarms on a sphere

Here we show that coupling to curvature has profound effects on collective motion in active systems, leading to patterns not observed in flat space. Biological examples of such active motion in curved environments are numerous: curvature and tissue folding are crucial during gastrulation, epithelial and endothelial cells move on constantly growing, curved crypts and vili in the gut, and the mammalian corneal epithelium grows in a steady-state vortex pattern. On the physics side, droplets coated with actively driven microtubule bundles show active nematic patterns. We study a model of self-propelled particles with polar alignment on a sphere. Hallmarks of these motion patterns are a polar vortex and a circulating band arising due to the incompatibility between spherical topology and uniform motion - a consequence of the hairy ball theorem. We present analytical results showing that frustration due to curvature leads to stable elastic distortions storing energy in the band.
