Signalling fiscal stress in the euro area - a country-specific early warning system
The sovereign debt crisis in the euro area has increased the interest in early warning indicators, with the aim to indicate the build?up of fiscal stress early on and to facilitate crisis prevention by a timely counteraction of fiscal and macroeconomic policies. This paper presents possible improvements to enhance existing early warning indicators for fiscal stress, especially for the euro area. We show that a country?specific approach could strongly increase the signalling power of early warning systems. Finally we draw policy conclusions for the setting?up and application of a system of early warning indicators for fiscal stress
A transiting super-Earth close to the inner edge of the habitable zone of an M0 dwarf star
We present a super-Earth orbiting close to the inner edge of the habitable
zone of the cool dwarf star K2-286 (EPIC 249889081), detected with data from
the K2 mission in its campaign. The planet has radius of
R, near the 1.5 - 2.0 R gap in the radii distribution.
The equilibrium temperature is K, cooler than most of the
small planets with well measured masses, and the orbital period is
days. K2-286, located at a distance of pc, is an
M0V star with estimated effective temperature of K, less active
than other M dwarf stars hosting exoplanets. The expected radial velocity
semi-amplitude induced by the planet on the star is
ms, and the amplitude of signals in transit transmission
spectroscopy is estimated at ppm. Follow-up observations for mass
measurements and transit spectroscopy should be desirable for this relatively
bright target () hosting a transiting super-Earth

Two planetary systems with transiting Earth-size and super-Earth planets orbiting late-type dwarf stars
We present two new planetary systems found around cool dwarf stars with data
from the K2 mission. The first system was found in K2-239 (EPIC 248545986),
char- acterized in this work as M3.0V and observed in the 14th campaign of K2.
It consists of three Earth-size transiting planets with radii of 1.1, 1.0 and
1.1 R Earth, showing a compact configuration with orbital periods of 5.24, 7.78
and 10.1 days, close to 2:3:4 resonance. The second was found in K2-240 (EPIC
249801827), characterized in this work as M0.5V and observed in the 15th
campaign. It consists of two transiting super-Earths with radii 2.0 and 1.8 R
Earth and orbital periods of 6.03 and 20.5 days. The equilibrium temperatures
of the atmospheres of these planets are estimated to be in the range of 380-600
K and the amplitudes of signals in transmission spectroscopy are estimated at

A portal of educational resources: providing evidence for matching pedagogy with technology
The TPACK (Technology, Pedagogy and Content Knowledge) model presents the three types of knowledge that are necessary to implement a successful technology-based educational activity. It highlights how the intersections between TPK (Technological Pedagogical Knowledge), PCK (Pedagogical Content Knowledge) and TCK (Technological Content Knowledge) are not a sheer sum up of their components but new types of knowledge. This paper focuses on TPK, the intersection between technology knowledge and pedagogy knowledge – a crucial field of investigation. Actually, technology in education is not just an add-on but is literally reshaping teaching/learning paradigms. Technology modifies pedagogy and pedagogy dictates requirements to technology. In order to pursue this research, an empirical approach was taken, building a repository (back-end) and a portal (front-end) of about 300 real-life educational experiences run at school. Educational portals are not new, but they generally emphasise content. Instead, in our portal, technology and pedagogy take centre stage. Experiences are classified according to more than 30 categories (‘facets’) and more than 200 facet values, all revolving around the pedagogical implementation and the technology used. The portal (an innovative piece of technology) supports sophisticated ‘exploratory’ sessions of use, targeted at researchers (investigating the TPK intersection), teachers (looking for inspiration in their daily jobs) and decision makers (making decisions about the introduction of technology into schools)
Batch and fed-batch growth of Pichia pastoris under increased air pressure
Pichia pastoris CBS 2612 behavior under air pressures of 1 bar, 3 bar and 5 bar in culture media of glycerol (pure and crude) and methanol was studied. Generally, the increase in oxygen transfer rate due to the increase of total pressure improved cellular growth for all carbon sources and for batch and fed-batch processes with different feeding rate strategies. In batch cultures, 1.4-fold, 1.2-fold, and 1.5-fold improvement in biomass production was obtained with the increase of air pressure up to 5 bar, using methanol, pure glycerol, and crude glycerol, respectively. The raise of air pressure to 5 bar using exponential feeding rate leaded to 1.4-fold improvement in biomass yield per glycerol mass consumed, for crude and pure glycerol.
The current low cost of crude glycerol from the biodiesel production together with the present results shows the possibility of improving cell mass production of P. pastoris using increased air pressure.The authors acknowledge the financial support provided by "Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia" (Grant SFRH/BD/47371/2008)

El principal objetivo de estos indicadores es anticipar la acumulación de desequilibrios fiscales para facilitar la prevención de crisis con las políticas fi scales y macroeconómicas oportunas. Este documento introduce una variante metodológica para mejorar los indicadores de alerta temprana existentes, especialmente para la zona del euro. Concretamente, se demuestra que un enfoque de umbrales específi cos para cada país podría aumentar considerablemente el poder predictivo de los sistemas de alerta temprana. Making New "New AI" Friends : Designing a Social Robot for Diabetic Children from an Embodied AI Perspective

Underlying the design of Robin is an "Embodied" (formerly also known as "New") Artificial Intelligence approach to robotics. In this paper we discuss the rationale behind the design of Robin to meet the needs of our intended end users (both children and medical staff), and how "New AI" provides a suitable approach to developing a friendly companion that fulfills the therapeutic and affective requirements of our end users beyond other approaches commonly used in assistive robotics and child-robot interaction. Finally, we discuss how our approach permitted our robot to interact with and provide suitable experiences of diabetes management to children with very different social interaction styles.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

Methods to study microbial adhesion on abiotic surfaces
Microbial biofilms are a matrix of cells and exopolymeric substances attached to a wet and solid surface and are commonly associated to several problems, such as biofouling and corrosion in industries and infectious diseases in urinary catheters and prosthesis. However, these cells may have several benefits in distinct applications, such as wastewater treatment processes, microbial fuel cells for energy production and biosensors. As microbial adhesion is a key step on biofilm formation, it is very important to understand and characterize microbial adhesion to a surface. This study presents an overview of predictive and experimental methods used for the study of bacterial adhesion. Evaluation of surface physicochemical properties have a limited capacity in describing the complex adhesion process. Investigating the Responses of Human Epithelial Cells to Predatory Bacteria
One beguiling alternative to antibiotics for treating multi-drug resistant infections are Bdellovibrio-and-like-organisms (BALOs), predatory bacteria known to attack human pathogens. Consequently, in this study, the responses from four cell lines (three human and one mouse) were characterized during an exposure to different predatory bacteria, Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus HD100, Bacteriovorus BY1 and Bacteriovorax stolpii EB1. TNF-alpha levels were induced in Raw 264.7 mouse macrophage cultures with each predator, but paled in comparison to those obtained with E. coli. This was true even though the latter strain was added at an 11.1-fold lower concentration (p < 0.01). Likewise, E. coli led to a significant (54%) loss in the Raw 264.7 murine macrophage viability while the predatory strains had no impact. Tests with various epithelial cells, including NuLi-1 airway, Caco2, HT29 and T84 colorectal cells, gave similar results, with E. coli inducing IL-8 production. The viabilities of the NuLi-1 and Caco-2 cells were slightly reduced (8%) when exposed to the predators, while T84 viability remained steady. In no cases did the predatory bacteria induce actin rearrangement. These results clearly demonstrate the gentle natures of predatory bacteria and their impacts on human cells.ope
