Dimensionality of the spatio-temporal entanglement of PDC photon pairs
In this work the Schmidt number of the two-photon state generated by
parametric-down conversion (PDC) is evaluated in the framework of a fully
spatio-temporal model for PDC. A comparison with the results obtained in either
purely spatial or purely temporal models shows that the degree of entanglement
of the PDC state cannot be trivially reduced to the product of the Schmidt
numbers obtained in models with lower dimensionality, unless the detected
bandwidth is very narrow. This result is a consequence of the non-factorability
of the state in the spatial and temporal degrees of freedoms of twin photons.
In the limit of a broad pump beam, we provide a geometrical interpretation of
the Schmidt number, as the ratio between the volume of the phase matching

Experience with daptomycin daily dosing in ICU patients undergoing continuous renal replacement therapy
Purpose: For critically ill patients undergoing continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), daptomycin dosing recommendations are scarce. We, therefore, retrospectively assessed routinely measured daptomycin plasma concentrations, daptomycin dose administered and microbiological data in 11 critically ill patients with Gram-positive infections that had received daptomycin once daily. Methods: The retrospective analysis included critically ill patients treated at the intensive care unit (ICU) who had daptomycin plasma concentrations measured. Results: Daptomycin dose ranged from 3 to 8mg/kg/q24h in patients undergoing CRRT (n=7) and 6 to 10mg/kg/q24h in patients without CRRT (n=4). Peak and trough concentrations showed a high intra- and inter-patient variability in both groups, independent of the dosage per kg body weight. No drug accumulation was detected in CRRT patients with once-daily daptomycin dosing. Causative pathogens were Enterococcus faecium (n=6), coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (n=2), Staphylococcus aureus (n=2) and unknown in one patient. Microbiological eradication was successful in 8 of 11 patients. Two of three patients with unsuccessful microbiological eradication and fatal outcome had an Enterococcus faecium infection. Conclusion: In critically ill patients undergoing CRRT, daptomycin exposure with once-daily dosing was similar to ICU patients with normal renal function, but lower compared to healthy volunteers. The effect of moving to East Village, the former London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Athletes' Village, on mode of travel (ENABLE London study, a natural experiment)
Background
Interventions to encourage active modes of travel (walking, cycling) may improve physical activity levels, but longitudinal evidence is limited and major change in the built environment / travel infrastructure may be needed. East Village (the former London 2012 Olympic Games Athletes Village) has been repurposed on active design principles with improved walkability, open space and public transport and restrictions on residential car parking. We examined the effect of moving to East Village on adult travel patterns.
Methods
One thousand two hundred seventy-eight adults (16+ years) seeking to move into social, intermediate, and market-rent East Village accommodation were recruited in 2013–2015, and followed up after 2 years. Individual objective measures of physical activity using accelerometry (ActiGraph GT3X+) and geographic location using GPS travel recorders (QStarz) were time-matched and a validated algorithm assigned four travel modes (walking, cycling, motorised vehicle, train). We examined change in time spent in different travel modes, using multilevel linear regresssion models adjusting for sex, age group, ethnicity, housing group (fixed effects) and household (random effect), comparing those who had moved to East Village at follow-up with those who did not.
Results
Of 877 adults (69%) followed-up, 578 (66%) provided valid accelerometry and GPS data for at least 1 day (≥540 min) at both time points; half had moved to East Village. Despite no overall effects on physical activity levels, sizeable improvements in walkability and access to public transport in East Village resulted in decreased daily vehicle travel (8.3 mins, 95%CI 2.5,14.0), particularly in the intermediate housing group (9.6 mins, 95%CI 2.2,16.9), and increased underground travel (3.9 mins, 95%CI 1.2,6.5), more so in the market-rent group (11.5 mins, 95%CI 4.4,18.6). However, there were no effects on time spent walking or cycling
Glassy Transition in the Vortex Lattice of Ba(Fe0.93Rh0.07)2As2 superconductor, probed by NMR and ac-susceptibility
By using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and ac-susceptibility, the characteristic
correlation times for the vortex dynamics, in an iron-based superconductor,
have been derived. Upon cooling, the vortex dynamics displays a crossover
consistent with a vortex glass transition. The correlation times, in the fast
motions regime, merge onto a universal curve which is fit by the Vogel-Fulcher
law, rather than by an Arrhenius law. Moreover, the pinning barrier shows a
weak dependence on the magnetic field which can be heuristically justified
within a fragile glass scenario. In addition, the glass freezing temperatures
obtained by the two techniques merge onto the de Almeida-Thouless line. Finally
the phase diagram for the mixed phase has been derived.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figure
The impact of cirrus clouds on tropical troposphere-to-stratosphere transport
International audienceAlthough it is well known that air enters the stratosphere preferentially through upwelling in the tropics, the exact mechanisms of troposphere-to-stratosphere transport (TST) are still unknown. Previously proposed mechanisms have been found either to be too slow (e.g., clear sky upwelling) to provide agreement with in situ tracer measurements, or to be insufficient in mass flux to act as a major supply for the Brewer-Dobson circulation (e.g., convective overshooting). In this study we evaluate whether the lofting of air via cirrus cloud-radiation interaction might offer an alternative path for TST, which is responsible for a significant fraction of the observed air mass transport. We find that a combination of deep convection and subsequent upwelling associated with cirrus clouds and clear sky can explain the supply of air for the Brewer-Dobson circulation. Thus, upwelling associated with cirrus clouds offers a mechanism for the missing second stage, which links the first stage of TST, deep convection, to the third stage, the Brewer-Dobson circulation
Is a perceived supportive physical environment important for self-reported leisure time physical activity among socioeconomically disadvantaged women with poor psychosocial characteristics? An observational study
Background Over the past decade, studies and public health interventions that target the physical environment as an avenue for promoting physical activity have increased in number. While it appears that a supportive physical environment has a role to play in promoting physical activity, social-ecological models emphasise the importance of considering other multiple levels of influence on behaviour, including individual (e.g. self-efficacy, intentions, enjoyment) and social (e.g. social support, access to childcare) factors (psychosocial factors). However, not everyone has these physical activity-promoting psychosocial characteristics; it remains unclear what contribution the environment makes to physical activity among these groups. This study aimed to examine the association between the perceived physical environment and self-reported leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) among women living in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas demonstrating different psychosocial characteristics.Methods In 2007–8, 3765 women (18–45 years) randomly selected from low socioeconomic areas in Victoria, Australia, self-reported LTPA, and individual, social and physical environmental factors hypothesised within a social-ecological framework to influence LTPA. Psychosocial and environment scores were created. Associations between environment scores and categories of LTPA (overall and stratified by thirds of perceived environment scores) were examined using generalised ordered logistic regression.Results Women with medium and high perceived environment scores had 20-38% and 44-70% greater odds respectively of achieving higher levels of LTPA than women with low environment scores. When stratified by thirds of psychosocial factor scores, these associations were largely attenuated and mostly became non-significant. However, women with the lowest psychosocial scores but medium or high environment scores had 76% and 58% higher odds respectively of achieving ≥120 minutes/week (vs. <120 minutes/week) LTPA.Conclusions Acknowledging the cross-sectional study design, the findings suggest that a physical environment perceived to be supportive of physical activity might help women with less favourable psychosocial characteristics achieve moderate amounts of LTPA (i.e. ≥120 minutes/week). This study provides further support for research and public health interventions to target perceptions of the physical environment as a key component of strategies to promote physical activity.<br /
Spin Dynamics in the LTT Phase of ~1/8 Doped Single Crystal La_{1.67}Eu_{0.2}Sr_{0.13}CuO_4
We present La and Cu NMR relaxation measurements in single crystal
La_{1.67}Eu_{0.2}Sr_{0.13}CuO_4. A strong peak in the La spin-lattice
relaxation rate observed in the spin ordered state is well-described by the BPP
mechanism[1] and arises from continuous slowing of electronic spin fluctuations
with decreasing temperature; these spin fluctuations exhibit XY-like anisotropy
in the ordered state. The spin pseudogap is enhanced by the static
charge-stripe order in the LTT phase.Comment: Four pages, three figure
Del Pezzo surfaces with 1/3(1,1) points
We classify del Pezzo surfaces with 1/3(1,1) points in 29 qG-deformation
families grouped into six unprojection cascades (this overlaps with work of
Fujita and Yasutake), we tabulate their biregular invariants, we give good
model constructions for surfaces in all families as degeneracy loci in rep
quotient varieties and we prove that precisely 26 families admit
qG-degenerations to toric surfaces. This work is part of a program to study

Performance of a multigap RPC prototype for the LHCb muon system
Several technologies are under consideration for the muon system of the LHCb experiment. Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) are one of the favourite candidates for the outer areas where the particle fluxes are expected to be at most some kHz/cm/sup 2/. This work describes the results obtained with a multigap RPC prototype under various beam conditions at the CERN facilities. (9 refs)
Liquid Limits: The Glass Transition and Liquid-Gas Spinodal Boundaries of Metastable Liquids
The liquid-gas spinodal and the glass transition define ultimate boundaries
beyond which substances cannot exist as (stable or metastable) liquids. The
relation between these limits is analyzed {\it via} computer simulations of a
model liquid. The results obtained indicate that the liquid - gas spinodal and
the glass transition lines intersect at a finite temperature, implying a glass
- gas mechanical instability locus at low temperatures. The glass transition
lines obtained by thermodynamic and dynamic criteria agree very well with each
