    Helicopter internal noise control: Three case histories

    Case histories are described in which measurable improvements in the cabin noise environments of the Bell 214B, 206B, and 222 were realized. These case histories trace the noise control efforts followed in each vehicle. Among the design approaches considered, the addition of a fluid pulsation damper in a hydraulic system and the installation of elastomeric engine mounts are highlighted. It is concluded that substantial weight savings result when the major interior noise sources are controlled by design, both in altering the noise producing mechanism and interrupting the sound transmission paths

    Influence of Correlated Hybridization on the Conductance of Molecular Transistors

    We study the spin-1/2 single-channel Anderson impurity model with correlated (occupancy dependent) hybridization for molecular transistors using the numerical renormalization-group method. Correlated hybridization can induce nonuniversal deviations in the normalized zero-bias conductance and, for some parameters, modestly enhance the spin polarization of currents in applied magnetic field. Correlated hybridization can also explain a gate-voltage dependence to the Kondo scale similar to what has been observed in recent experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Symptomatic zoonotic knowlesi malaria in humans is widespread in the region and is associated with a history of spending time in the jungle. However, there are many settings where knowlesi transmission to humans would be expected but is not found.     Quantitative photoacoustic estimates of intervascular blood oxygenation differences using linear unmixing

    The linear unmixing technique is an appealing method for estimating blood oxygen saturation (sO2) from multiwavelength photoacoustic tomography images, as estimates can be acquired with a straightforward matrix inversion. However, the technique can only rarely provide accurate estimates in vivo, as it requires that the light fluence at the voxels of interest is constant with wavelength. One way to extend the set of cases where accurate information related to sO2 can be acquired with the technique is by taking the difference in sO2 estimates between vessels. Assuming images are perfectly reconstructed, the intervascular difference in sO2 estimates is accurate if the error in the estimates due to the wavelength dependence of the fluence is identical for both. An in silico study was performed to uncover what kinds of conditions may give rise to accurate sO2 differences for a vessel pair. Basic criteria were formulated in simple tissue models consisting of a pair of vessels immersed in two-layer skin models. To assess whether these criteria might still be valid in more realistic imaging scenarios, the sO2 difference was estimated for vessels in more complex tissue models

    Perturbations in the Kerr-Newman Dilatonic Black Hole Background: I. Maxwell waves

    In this paper we analyze the perturbations of the Kerr-Newman dilatonic black hole background. For this purpose we perform a double expansion in both the background electric charge and the wave parameters of the relevant quantities in the Newman-Penrose formalism. We then display the gravitational, dilatonic and electromagnetic equations, which reproduce the static solution (at zero order in the wave parameter) and the corresponding wave equations in the Kerr background (at first order in the wave parameter and zero order in the electric charge). At higher orders in the electric charge one encounters corrections to the propagations of waves induced by the presence of a non-vanishing dilaton. An explicit computation is carried out for the electromagnetic waves up to the asymptotic form of the Maxwell field perturbations produced by the interaction with dilatonic waves. A simple physical model is proposed which could make these perturbations relevant to the detection of radiation coming from the region of space near a black hole.Comment: RevTeX, 36 pages in preprint style, 1 figure posted as a separate PS file, submitted to Phys.     Phylogenetic relationships among basal-most arthrodontous mosses with special emphasis on the evolutionary significance of the Funariineae

    The classification of the Bryopsida (mosses) has been based primarily on the variation of sporophytic characters i.e., architectural features of the peristome teeth that line the capsule mouth. Five arthrodontous peristome types have been recognized. Whether peristome types define natural groups and how they are evolutionary related has, however, remained unclear. Nucleotide sequence data from one nuclear and two chloroplast loci are generated and compiled to test two contrasting hypotheses regarding the ancestral peristome type in the Arthrodonteae. The genomic data partitions are incongruent with regard to the phylogenetic signal they carry. All phylogenetic analyses converge toward the polyphyly of the Funariineae and the Funariaceae. The Funariaceae are defined by the loss of a codon in the rps4 gene. Goniomitrium acuminatum, the type of the genus, lacks this deletion, and is always resolved within the Haplolepideae
