Influence of interspecific competition on the population dynamics of migratory plant-parasitic nematodes with r and K survival strategies
Canine dystocia in 50 UK first-opinion emergency-care veterinary practices: prevalence and risk factors
Dystocia can represent a major welfare issue for dogs of certain breeds and morphologies. First-opinion emergency-care veterinary caseloads represent a useful data resource for epidemiological research because dystocia can often result in emergency veterinary care. The study analysed a merged database of clinical records from 50 first-opinion emergency-care veterinary practices participating in the VetCompass Programme. Multivariable logistic regression modelling was used for risk factors analysis. There were 701 dystocia cases recorded among 18,758 entire female dogs, resulting in a dystocia prevalence of 3.7 per cent (95 per cent CI 3.5–4.0 per cent). Breeds with the highest odds of dystocia compared with crossbred bitches were French Bulldog (OR: 15.9, 95 per cent CI 9.3 to 27.2, P<0.001), Boston Terrier (OR: 12.9, 95 per cent CI 5.6 to 29.3, P<0.001), Chihuahua (OR: 10.4, 95 per cent CI 7.0 to 15.7, P<0.001) and Pug (OR: 11.3, 95 per cent CI 7.1 to 17.9, P<0.001). Bitches aged between 3.0 and 5.9 years had 3.1 (95 per cent CI 2.6 to 3.7, P<0.001) times the odds of dystocia compared with bitches aged under 3.0years. Certain breeds, including some brachycephalic and toy breeds, appeared at high risk of dystocia. Opportunities to improve this situation are discussed
Development and operation of a pixel segmented liquid-filled linear array for radiotherapy quality assurance
A liquid isooctane (CH) filled ionization linear array for
radiotherapy quality assurance has been designed, built and tested. The
detector consists of 128 pixels, each of them with an area of 1.7 mm
1.7 mm and a gap of 0.5 mm. The small pixel size makes the detector ideal for
high gradient beam profiles like those present in Intensity Modulated Radiation
Therapy (IMRT) and radiosurgery. As read-out electronics we use the X-Ray Data
Acquisition System (XDAS) with the Xchip developed by the CCLRC.
Studies concerning the collection efficiency dependence on the polarization
voltage and on the dose rate have been made in order to optimize the device
operation.
In the first tests we have studied dose rate and energy dependences, and
signal reproducibility. Dose rate dependence was found lower than 2.5 % up to 5
Gy min, and energy dependence lower than 2.1 % up to 20 cm depth in
solid water. Output factors and penumbras for several rectangular fields have
been measured with the linear array and were compared with the results obtained
with a 0.125 cm air ionization chamber and radiographic film,
respectively. Finally, we have acquired profiles for an IMRT field and for a
virtual wedge. These profiles have also been compared with radiographic film
measurements. All the comparisons show a good correspondence. Signal
reproducibility was within a 2% during the test period (around three months).
The device has proved its capability to verify on-line therapy beams with

A culture of silence: modes of objectification and the silencing of disabled bodies
Throughout history different practices have attempted to silence the experiences of disabled people. In this paper we explore some of these practices including the medical, familial, and self-subjugating practices English-speaking Canadian polio survivors experienced throughout their lives. We analyze participant’s experiences of silence and silencing through a Foucauldian lens, drawing on the three modes of objectification to explain the institutional and cultural discourses around polio subjects that acted upon and through the polio body to silence it. Participants’ oral history accounts demonstrate how sociocultural and medical practices effectively silenced survivors from speaking about their polio experiences. However, the trope of silence is also uprooted within oral history traditions. We will demonstrate how participants broke their silence and shifted their perspectives on polio and disability, and how this process contributed to their resistance of hegemonic conceptualizations of disability as defective
Defining the Schistosoma haematobium kinome enables the prediction of essential kinases as anti-schistosome drug targets
The blood fluke Schistosoma haematobium causes urogenital schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease (NTD) that affects more than 110 million people. Treating this disease by targeted or mass administration with a single chemical, praziquantel, carries the risk that drug resistance will develop in this pathogen. Therefore, there is an imperative to search for new drug targets in S. haematobium and other schistosomes. In this regard, protein kinases have potential, given their essential roles in biological processes and as targets for drugs already approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in humans. In this context, we defined here the kinome of S. haematobium using a refined bioinformatic pipeline. We classified, curated and annotated predicted kinases, and assessed the developmental transcription profiles of kinase genes. Then, we prioritised a panel of kinases as potential drug targets and inferred chemicals that bind to them using an integrated bioinformatic pipeline. Most kinases of S. haematobium are very similar to those of its congener, S. mansoni, offering the prospect of designing chemicals that kill both species. Overall, this study provides a global insight into the kinome of S. haematobium and should assist the repurposing or discovery of drugs against schistosomiasis
Flatworms have lost the right open reading frame kinase 3 gene during evolution
All multicellular organisms studied to date have three right open reading frame kinase genes (designated riok-1, riok-2 and riok-3). Current evidence indicates that riok-1 and riok-2 have essential roles in ribosome biosynthesis, and that the riok-3 gene assists this process. In the present study, we conducted a detailed bioinformatic analysis of the riok gene family in 25 parasitic flatworms (platyhelminths) for which extensive genomic and transcriptomic data sets are available. We found that none of the flatworms studied have a riok-3 gene, which is unprecedented for multicellular organisms. We propose that, unlike in other eukaryotes, the loss of RIOK-3 from flatworms does not result in an evolutionary disadvantage due to the unique biology and physiology of this phylum. We show that the loss of RIOK-3 coincides with a loss of particular proteins associated with essential cellular pathways linked to cell growth and apoptosis. These findings indicate multiple, key regulatory functions of RIOK-3 in other metazoan species. Taking advantage of a known partial crystal structure of human RIOK-1, molecular modelling revealed variability in nucleotide binding sites between flatworm and human RIOK proteins
