Backgrounds in Boundary String Field Theory
We study the role of closed string backgrounds in boundary string field
theory. Background independence requires the introduction of dual boundary
fields, which are reminiscent of the doubled field formalism. We find a
correspondence between closed string backgrounds and collective excitations of
open strings described by vertex operators involving dual fields.
Renormalization group flow, solutions and stability are discussed in an
example.Comment: Contribution to proceedings of SFT09 in 'Theoretical and Mathematical

Impact of dispersion on pulse dynamics in chirped-pulse fiber lasers
Cataloged from PDF version of article. We report on a systematic study of an environmentally stable mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser operating in the chirped-pulse regime. The linear cavity chirped-pulse fiber laser is constructed with a saturable absorber mirror as nonlinear mode-locking mechanism and a nonlinearity-free transmission-grating-based stretcher/compressor for dispersion management. Mode-locked operation and pulse dynamics from strong normal to strong anomalous total cavity dispersion in the range of +2.5 to -1.6 ps(2) is experimentally studied. Strongly positively chirped pulses from 4.3 ps (0.01 ps(2)) to 39 ps (2.5 ps(2)) are obtained at normal net-cavity dispersion. In the anomalous dispersion regime, the laser generates average soliton feature negatively chirped pulses with autocorrelation pulse durations from 0.8 ps (-0.07 ps(2)) to 3.9 ps (-1.6 ps(2)). The lowered peak power due to the pulse stretching allows one to increase the double pulse threshold. Based on the numerical simulation, different regimes of mode locking are obtained by varying the intra-cavity dispersion, and the characteristics of average soliton, stretched-pulse, wave-breaking-free and chirped-pulse regimes are discussed
D-brane superpotentials and RG flows on the quintic
The behaviour of D2-branes on the quintic under complex structure
deformations is analysed by combining Landau-Ginzburg techniques with methods
from conformal field theory. It is shown that the boundary renormalisation
group flow induced by the bulk deformations is realised as a gradient flow of
the effective space time superpotential which is calculated explicitly to all
orders in the boundary coupling constant.Comment: 24 pages, 1 figure, v2:Typo in (3.14) correcte
Remarks on quiver gauge theories from open topological string theory
We study effective quiver gauge theories arising from a stack of D3-branes on certain Calabi-Yau singularities. Our point of view is a first principle approach via open topological string theory. This means that we construct the natural A-infinity-structure of open string amplitudes in the associated D-brane category. Then we show that it precisely reproduces the results of the method of brane tilings, without having to resort to any effective field theory computations. In particular, we prove a general and simple formula for effective superpotentials
Manifestly Supersymmetric RG Flows
Renormalisation group (RG) equations in two-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric
field theories with boundary are studied. It is explained how a manifestly N=1
supersymmetric scheme can be chosen, and within this scheme the RG equations
are determined to next-to-leading order. We also use these results to revisit
the question of how brane obstructions and lines of marginal stability appear
from a world-sheet perspective.Comment: 22 pages; references added, minor change
Ultrashort pulse formation and evolution in mode-locked fiber lasers
Passive mode-locking in fiber lasers is investigated by numerical and experimental means. A non-distributed scalar model solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation is implemented to study the starting behavior and intra-cavity dynamics numerically. Several operation regimes at positive net-cavity dispersion are experimentally accessed and studied in different environmentally stable, linear laser configurations. In particular, pulse formation and evolution in the chirped-pulse regime at highly positive cavity dispersion is discussed. Based on the experimental results a route to highly energetic pulse solutions is shown in numerical simulations. © 2011 Springer-Verlag
Symmetries of perturbed conformal field theories
The symmetries of perturbed conformal field theories are analysed. We explain
which generators of the chiral algebras of a bulk theory survive a perturbation
by an exactly marginal bulk field. We also study the behaviour of D-branes
under current-current bulk deformations. We find that the branes always
continue to preserve as much symmetry as they possibly can, i.e. as much as is
preserved in the bulk. We illustrate these findings with several examples,
including permutation branes in WZW models and B-type D-branes in Gepner
models.Comment: 30 pages, 3 figures. V2: Small error in eq. (2.14) correcte
Sub-80 fe dissipative soliton large-mode-area fiber laser
We report on high-energy ultrashort pulse generation from an all-normal-dispersion large-mode-area fiber laser by exploiting an efficient combination of nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) and a semiconductor-based saturable absorber mode-locking mechanism. The watt-level laser directly emits chirped pulses with a duration of 1 ps and 163 nJ of pulse energy. These can be compressed to 77 fs, generating megawatt-level peak power. Intracavity dynamics are discussed by numerical simulation, and the intracavity pulse evolution reveals that NPE plays a key role in pulse shaping. © 2010 Optical Society of America
Quantum Open-Closed Homotopy Algebra and String Field Theory
We reformulate the algebraic structure of Zwiebach's quantum open-closed
string field theory in terms of homotopy algebras. We call it the quantum
open-closed homotopy algebra (QOCHA) which is the generalization of the
open-closed homotopy algebra (OCHA) of Kajiura and Stasheff. The homotopy
formulation reveals new insights about deformations of open string field theory
by closed string backgrounds. In particular, deformations by Maurer Cartan
elements of the quantum closed homotopy algebra define consistent quantum open
string field theories.Comment: 36 pages, fixed typos and small clarifications adde
High average and peak power femtosecond large-pitch photonic-crystal-fiber laser
We report on the generation of high-average-power and high-peak-power ultrashort pulses from a mode-locked fiber laser operating in the all-normal-dispersion regime. As gain medium, a large-mode-area ytterbium-doped large-pitch photonic-crystal fiber is used. The self-starting fiber laser delivers 27 W of average power at 50:57 MHz repetition rate, resulting in 534 nJ of pulse energy. The laser produces positively chirped 2 ps output pulses, which are compressed down to sub-100 fs, leading to pulse peak powers as high as 3:2 MW. © 2011 Optical Society of America
