    Local tunneling spectroscopy of the electron-doped cuprate Sm1.85Ce0.15CuO4

    We present local tunneling spectroscopy in the optimally electron-doped cuprate Sm2-xCexCuO4 x=0.15. A clear signature of the superconducting gap is observed with an amplitude ranging from place to place and from sample to sample (Delta~3.5-6meV). Another spectroscopic feature is simultaneously observed at high energy above \pm 50meV. Its energy scale and temperature evolution is found to be compatible with previous photoemission and optical experiments. If interpreted as the signature of antiferromagnetic order in the samples, these results could suggest the coexistence on the local scale of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity on the electron-doped side of cuprate superconductors

    Monitoring the impacts of trade agreements on food environments

    The liberalization of international trade and foreign direct investment through multilateral, regional and bilateral agreements has had profound implications for the structure and nature of food systems, and therefore, for the availability, nutritional quality, accessibility, price and promotion of foods in different locations. Public health attention has only relatively recently turned to the links between trade and investment agreements, diets and health, and there is currently no systematic monitoring of this area. This paper reviews the available evidence on the links between trade agreements, food environments and diets from an obesity and non-communicable disease (NCD) perspective. Based on the key issues identified through the review, the paper outlines an approach for monitoring the potential impact of trade agreements on food environments and obesity/NCD risks. The proposed monitoring approach encompasses a set of guiding principles, recommended procedures for data collection and analysis, and quantifiable ‘minimal’, ‘expanded’ and ‘optimal’ measurement indicators to be tailored to national priorities, capacity and resources. Formal risk assessment processes of existing and evolving trade and investment agreements, which focus on their impacts on food environments will help inform the development of healthy trade policy, strengthen domestic nutrition and health policy space and ultimately protect population nutrition.The following organizations provided funding support for the travel of participants to Italy for this meeting and the preparation of background research papers: The Rockefeller Foundation, International Obesity Taskforce (IOTF), University of Auckland, Deakin University, The George Institute, University of Sydney, Queensland University of Technology, University of Oxford, University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, World Cancer Research Fund International, University of Toronto, and The Australian National University.     Nodal liquid and s-wave superconductivity in transition metal dichalcogenides

    We explore the physical properties of a unified microscopic theory for the coexistence of superconductivity and charge density waves in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides. In the case of particle-hole symmetry the elementary particles are Dirac fermions at the nodes of the charge density wave gap. When particle-hole symmetry is broken electron (hole) pockets are formed around the Fermi surface. The superconducting ground state emerges from the pairing of nodal quasi-particles mediated by acoustic phonons via a piezoelectric coupling. We calculate several properties in the s-wave superconducting phase, including specific heat, ultra-sound absorption, nuclear magnetic relaxation, thermal, and optical conductivities. In the case with particle-hole symmetry, the specific heat jump at the transition deviates strongly from ordinary superconductors. The nuclear magnetic response shows an anomalous anisotropy due to the broken time-reversal symmetry of the superconducting gap, induced by the triple charge density wave state. The loss of lattice inversion symmetry in the charge density wave phase leads to anomalous coherence factors in the optical conductivity and to the appearance of an absorption edge at the optical gap energy. Furthermore, optical and thermal conductivities display anomalous peaks in the infrared when particle-hole symmetry is broken.Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures. Published versio

    Open TURNS: An industrial software for uncertainty quantification in simulation

    The needs to assess robust performances for complex systems and to answer tighter regulatory processes (security, safety, environmental control, and health impacts, etc.) have led to the emergence of a new industrial simulation challenge: to take uncertainties into account when dealing with complex numerical simulation frameworks. Therefore, a generic methodology has emerged from the joint effort of several industrial companies and academic institutions. EDF R&D, Airbus Group and Phimeca Engineering started a collaboration at the beginning of 2005, joined by IMACS in 2014, for the development of an Open Source software platform dedicated to uncertainty propagation by probabilistic methods, named OpenTURNS for Open source Treatment of Uncertainty, Risk 'N Statistics. OpenTURNS addresses the specific industrial challenges attached to uncertainties, which are transparency, genericity, modularity and multi-accessibility. This paper focuses on OpenTURNS and presents its main features: openTURNS is an open source software under the LGPL license, that presents itself as a C++ library and a Python TUI, and which works under Linux and Windows environment. All the methodological tools are described in the different sections of this paper: uncertainty quantification, uncertainty propagation, sensitivity analysis and metamodeling. A section also explains the generic wrappers way to link openTURNS to any external code. The paper illustrates as much as possible the methodological tools on an educational example that simulates the height of a river and compares it to the height of a dyke that protects industrial facilities. At last, it gives an overview of the main developments planned for the next few years

    Real-Time Mobile Personalized Simulations of Impaired Colour Vision

    Colour forms an essential element of day-to-day life for most people, but at least 5% of the world have Impaired Colour Vision (ICV) - seeing fewer colours than everyone else. Those with typical colour vision find it difficult to understand how people with ICV perceive colour, leading to misunderstanding and challenges for people with ICV. To help improve understanding, personalized simulations of ICV have been developed, but are computationally demanding (so limited to static images), which limits the value of these simulations. To address this, we extended personalized ICV simulations to work in real time on a mobile device to allow people with typical colour vision greater freedom in exploring ICV. To validate our approach, we compared our real-time simulation technique to an existing adjustable simulation technique and found general agreement between the two. We then deployed three real-time personalized ICV simulations to nine people with typical colour vision, encouraging them to take photos of interesting colour situations. In just over one week, participants recorded over 450 real-world images of situations where their simulation presented a distinct challenge for their respective ICV participant. Through a questionnaire and discussion of photos with participants, we found that our solution provides a valuable mechanism for building understanding of ICV for people with typical colour vision

    Size Acceptance: A Discursive Analysis of Online Blogs

Although alternative discourses such as “size acceptance” exist, there has been little consideration of the ways in which these alternative arguments (and speakers) may be positioned to be heard. Using a discursive thematic analysis, the authors demonstrate that size acceptance online bloggers have created a community online that enables them to persuasively provide alternative claims to “expertise,” which positions their views as credible and legitimate alternatives to those of more established authority figures—such as health professionals. This has implications not only for the lived experience of fat people, but also for researchers by emphasizing the importance of exploring not just what is said, but how, if we are to understand how different articulated positions are to be persuasive.Peer reviewe

    Quasiparticle spectrum of the cuprate BiSrCaCuO: Possible connection to the phase diagram

    We previously introduced [T. Cren et al., Europhys. Lett. 52, 203 (2000)] an energy-dependant gap function, Δ(E)\Delta(E), that fits the unusual shape of the quasiparticle (QP) spectrum for both BiSrCaCuO and YBaCuO. A simple anti-resonance in Δ(E)\Delta(E) accounts for the pronounced QP peaks in the density of states, at an energy Δp\Delta_p, and the dip feature at a higher energy, EdipE_{dip}. Here we go a step further : our gap function is consistent with the (T,pT, p) phase diagram, where pp is the carrier density. For large QP energies (E>>ΔpE >> \Delta_p), the total spectral gap is Δ(E)Δp+Δϕ\Delta(E) \simeq \Delta_p + \Delta_\phi, where Δϕ\Delta_\phi is tied to the condensation energy. From the available data, a simple pp-dependance of Δp\Delta_p and Δϕ\Delta_\phi is found, in particular Δϕ(p)2.3kBTc(p)\Delta_\phi(p) \simeq 2.3 k_B T_c(p). These two distinct energy scales of the superconducting state are interpreted by comparing with the normal and pseudogap states. The various forms of the QP density of states, as well as the spectral function A(k,E)A(k,E), are discussed

    ‘I don't think I can catch it’: women, confidence and responsibility in football coach education

    Whilst women’s participation in sport continues to increase, their presence remains ideologically challenging given the significance of sport for the construction of gendered identities. As a hegmonically masculine institution, leadership roles across sport remain male-dominated and the entry of women into positions of authority (such as coaching) routinely contested. But in powerful male-typed sports, like football, women’s participation remains particularly challenging. Consequently, constructions of gender inequity in coaching were explored at a regional division of the English Football Association through unstructured interviews and coaching course observation. Using critical discourse analysis we identified the consistent re/production of women as unconfident in their own skills and abilities, and the framing of women themselves as responsible for the gendered inequities in football coaching. Women were thereby strategically positioned as deservedly on the periphery of the football category,whilst the organization was positioned as progressive and liberal
