The synthesis of ZnO:Co nanorods in alcoholic solutions and their structural, optical, and magnetic properties are presented. One-dimensional growth is achieved by careful control over the precursor addition and with the aid of ethylene diamine as a ligand. The nanorods are single-crystalline and show growth into the [0001] direction. They exhibit diameters of about 20 nm and lengths up to 150 nm. Using (HR)TEM, EDX, and XANES, we prove the incorporation of Co cations on Zn lattice sites. SQUID and XMCD measurements at cryogenic temperatures show paramagnetic behavior of the doped nanorods. Apparently, there are too few donor electrons to mediate ferromagnetic coupling in the highly crystalline nanorods compared to defect-rich spherical nanoparticle

Crossed Ga_2O_3/SnO_2 Multiwire Architecture: A Local Structure Study with Nanometer Resolution

    Get PDF
Crossed nanowire structures are the basis for high-density integration of a variety of nanodevices. Owing to the critical role of nanowires intersections in creating hybrid architectures, it has become a challenge to investigate the local structure in crossing points in metal oxide nanowires. Thus, if intentionally grown crossed nanowires are well-patterned, an ideal model to the role of impurities in the coupling formation, structural modifications, and atomic site configuration based on crossed Ga_2O_3/SnO_2 nanowires. Our experiment opens new avenues for further local structure studies with both nanometer resolution and elemental sensitivity

    Rural politics in contemporary China

    No full text
We examine overarching themes in the contributions, including critiques of neo-liberalism, rural-urban linkages, the relevance of mixed methods and cross-disciplinary approaches, the need to engage social theory, and variation across space and time. At the same time, we provide an overview of rural Chinese politics and explain that the goal of the collection was to bring findings that have appeared in area studies or disciplinary outlets into conversation with peasant studies research. After discussing intellectual debates about the peasantry, everyday practices of governance, contentious politics, the mutual constitution of the rural and urban, and environmental politics, we conclude that work on the Chinese countryside needs 'lumping' (to discover unexpected similarities) and 'splitting' (to uncover patterns and forks in the road). Chinese rural politics is neither 'turtles all the way down' and baffling complexity, nor one master story that applies in all times and places. Instead we must continue to navigate the path between exoticizing China and treating its rural transformation as a tale many times told. © 2013 © 2013 Taylor & Francis

First-principles study of elastic and vibrational properties of Ni 2MnIn magnetic shape memory alloys

We present the results of ab initio calculations of lattice dynamics and the second order elastic stiffness constants of nickel-based magnetic shape memory alloy Ni 2MnIn in stoichiometric composition. The plane wave basis sets and pseudopotential method within spin-polarized generalized gradient approximation (σ-GGA) scheme of the density functional theory (DFT) is applied. Elastic constants are calculated by tetragonal and monoclinic isochoric strains on cubic L2 1 structure. The calculated elastic constants agree very well with the recent ultrasonic experimental data. Phonon dispersion spectra are investigated within linear response technique of the density functional perturbation theory (DFPT). A vibrational anomaly is observed in phonon spectra at the transverse acoustic mode (TA 2) in [ζ ζ0] direction at wavevector ζ=0.3 as an indication of the structural instability of the system to shear deformation. This anomaly is also verified by the low shear modulus and large elastic anisotropy ratio. Phonon dispersion curves are in excellent agreement with the results of recent neutron diffraction experiments. Copyright EDP Sciences, SIF, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011
