Poverty in a multidimensional perspective: Great Britain and Germany in comparison
This paper deals with the issue of poverty in a comparative and multidimensional perspective. Based on Townsendâs concept of relative deprivation, we analyse what people can afford compared to their perceived necessities for decent living. We will analyse definitions of living standard and social deprivation within two European countries which provide sufficient data and differ in their institutional settings: Britain and Germany. The assumption is that different welfare regimes and different social policies will bring about dissimilar deprivation risks. In addition, the concept of deprivation is combined with income poverty to focus on those who are affected by both shortages, low income and a low standard of living. With a multivariate analysis deprivation risks other than income are examined. Indicators of subjective well-being show the effect different poverty levels have on peopleâs satisfaction in several life domains. The results underline the importance of taking into account different poverty aspects; standard of living turns out to be the main factor to explain overall life satisfaction and can well be seen as the core of multidimensional poverty research.
Response biases
Response biases comprise a variety of systematic tendencies of responding to questionnaire items. Response biases exert an influence on item responses in addition to any constructs that the questionnaire is designed to measure and can therefore potentially bias the corresponding trait level estimates. This chapter addresses general response biases that are independent of item content, including response styles (e.g., extreme response style, acquiescence) and rater biases (halo effect, leniency/severity bias), as well as response biases that are related to item content and depend strongly on the context (socially desirable responding). The chapter summarizes research on correlates of response biases and research on inter-individual and cross-cultural differences in engaging in response styles and rater biases. It describes different methods that can be applied at the test construction stage to prevent or minimize the occurrence of response biases. Finally, it depicts methods developed for correcting for the effects of response biases.</p

Approaches and Methods
This report is a documentation of the methodological approach for an impact
assessment of development intervention in conflict zones. We designed this
approach for one specific region, Northeast Afghanistan, but we believe that
it can easily be adapted to other regions and other contexts. This report is
one result of an eight-year cooperative research project conducted by the
German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ),
evaluation division, and Freie UniversitĂ€t Berlinâs Collaborative Research
Center (SFB) 700. The overall objectives of this project are, first, to
develop a method for assessing the impact of development cooperation in
conflict zones, and second, to apply this method in Northeast Afghanistan. The
experiences from the first round of the emerging longitudinal impact
assessment were taken into consideration in the present report. The basic
question that we seek to address is whether development cooperation positively
affects the stabilization of a conflict zone through a positive impact on
general attitudes toward foreign intervention, on the legitimacy of the Afghan
state, and on perceived security threats.
Die Analysen beruhen auf Daten des Wohlfahrtssurvey 1998.Based on Townsendâs concept of relative deprivation, this paper deals with standard of living and poverty in Germany. What do the Germans in East and West regard as necessities for a decent standard of living? And how does their actual standard of living look like? It is analyzed whether a worth mentioning part of the population is excluded from a decent standard of living, which socio-demographic groups are most vulnerable to deprivation, and whether East Germans are especially affected by deprivation and poverty, as the thesis of âtransition povertyâ suggests. By combining the direct (via standards of living) and indirect (via incomes) measurement of poverty, we can distinguish three poverty positions: income poverty, deprivation, and double poverty, which means very low income together with a strongly restricted standard of living. These three poverty positions can also be distinguished by their different levels of subjective well-being: satisfaction with life in general and with social integration is much lower if people live in double poverty.
-- In this paper the connection between the development of living conditions in East and West Germany on the one hand and the subjective well-being of the population on the other hand is explored. Ten years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, East Germans still are in a lower position within the German stratification system. But differences in individual living conditions only account for part of these differences in satisfaction and attitudes between East and West Germans. This gap can be explained by collective comparisons between the old and the new BundeslĂ€nder, assessments of the individual status and political beliefs. It follows that a further improvement of living conditions in the Eastern part must not automatically lead to identical levels of satisfaction. To reach this, equal living conditions are a necessary, but not the only precondition.
Factor analysis of treatment outcomes from a UK specialist addiction service:relationship between the Leeds Dependence Questionnaire, Social Satisfaction Questionnaire and 10-item Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation
INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: To examine the relationship between three outcome measures used by a specialist addiction service (UK): the Leeds Dependence Questionnaire (LDQ), the Social Satisfaction Questionnaire (SSQ) and the 10-item Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation (CORE-10). DESIGN AND METHOD: A clinical sample of 715 service user records was extracted from a specialist addiction service (2011) database. The LDQ (dependence), SSQ (social satisfaction) and CORE-10 (psychological distress) were routinely administered at the start of treatment and again between 3 and 12 months post-treatment. A mixed pre/post-treatment dataset of 526 service users was subjected to exploratory factor analysis. Parallel Analysis and the Hull method were used to suggest the most parsimonious factor solution. RESULTS: Exploratory factor analysis with three factors accounted for 66.2% of the total variance but Parallel Analysis supported two factors as sufficient to account for observed correlations among items. In the two-factor solution, LDQ items and nine of the 10 CORE-10 items loaded on the first factor >0.41, and the SSQ items on factor 2 with loadings >0.63. A two dimensional summary appears sufficient and clinically meaningful. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Among specialist addiction service users, social satisfaction appears to be a unique construct of addiction and is not the same as variation due to psychological distress or dependence. Our interpretation of the findings is that dependence is best thought of as a specific psychological condition subsumed under the construct psychological distress. An evaluation of computerized adaptive testing for general psychological distress: combining GHQ-12 and Affectometer-2 in an item bank for public mental health research.
BACKGROUND: Recent developments in psychometric modeling and technology allow pooling well-validated items from existing instruments into larger item banks and their deployment through methods of computerized adaptive testing (CAT). Use of item response theory-based bifactor methods and integrative data analysis overcomes barriers in cross-instrument comparison. This paper presents the joint calibration of an item bank for researchers keen to investigate population variations in general psychological distress (GPD). METHODS: Multidimensional item response theory was used on existing health survey data from the Scottish Health Education Population Survey (nâ=â766) to calibrate an item bank consisting of pooled items from the short common mental disorder screen (GHQ-12) and the Affectometer-2 (a measure of "general happiness"). Computer simulation was used to evaluate usefulness and efficacy of its adaptive administration. RESULTS: A bifactor model capturing variation across a continuum of population distress (while controlling for artefacts due to item wording) was supported. The numbers of items for different required reliabilities in adaptive administration demonstrated promising efficacy of the proposed item bank. CONCLUSIONS: Psychometric modeling of the common dimension captured by more than one instrument offers the potential of adaptive testing for GPD using individually sequenced combinations of existing survey items. The potential for linking other item sets with alternative candidate measures of positive mental health is discussed since an optimal item bank may require even more items than these.Charles University PRVOUK programme nr. The Euromodule: a new instrument for comparative welfare research
"As Europe is growing together politically and economically, the international perspective is becoming more and more important in social reporting and welfare research. Are there strong differences in the objective living conditions and the subjective well-being between European nations? Do the Europeans enjoy the same quality of society all over Europe? To answer questions like these empirically, research teams from 19 nations have set up a research initiative. As a result of this cooperation the Euromodule came into being, a survey instrument for a European welfare comparison. By now, data from Germany, Hungary, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland are available. In this paper the conception and development of the Euromodule are described. In an extensive appendix, the Euromodule master questionnaire and other central materials are documented." (Autorenreferat
