Microfabricated gas sensor systems with sensitive nanocrystalline metal-oxide films
This article gives an overview on recent developments in metal-oxide-based gas sensor systems, in particular on nanocrystalline oxide materials deposited on modern, state-of-the-art sensor platforms fabricated in microtechnology. First, metal-oxide-based gas sensors are introduced, and the underlying principles and fundamentals of the gas sensing process are laid out. In the second part, the different deposition methods, such as evaporation, sputtering, sol-gel techniques, aerosol methods, and screen-printing, and their applicability to micro-scale substrates are discussed in terms of their deposition precision, the achievable layer thickness, as well as with regard to the possibility to use pre-processed materials. In the third part, microsensor platforms and, in particular, semiconductor- and microelectronics-based sensor platforms, which have been fabricated in, e.g., standard CMOS-technology (CMOS: complementary metal-oxide semiconductor), are briefly reviewed. The use of such microfabricated sensor platforms inevitably imposes constraints, such as temperature limits, on the applied nanomaterial processing and deposition methods. These limitations are discussed and work-arounds are described. Additionally, monolithic sensor systems are presented that combine microtransducers or microhotplates, which are coated with nanomaterials, with the necessary control and driving electronics on a single chip. The most advanced of such systems are standalone units that can be directly connected to a computer via a digital interfac
EVALUATION OF THE GROUNDWATER QUALITY IN A CLOSED INDUSTRIAL LANDFILL
The study parameters: pH, conductivity, salinity, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Turbidity, Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) of groundwater in a closed industrial landfill, subject to the waste discharges of city of Bacau (East Romania), shows that the water quality of the different sampling points is variable. This difference is noted at the level of conductivity, TDS, turbidity, TSS and COD. These differences, however parameters are substantially higher compared the value of the legislation in groundwater Romania. Salinity remains relatively high at the point of sample P1 (0.7). The pH values are comprising in the range of reference values (6.5 to 7.4). The results also showed very strong correlations (r> 0.8) between Conductivity-Salinity, Conductivity -TDS, Salinity, TDS, Turbidity.-TSS, COD and TSS-Turbidity-COD. The strong correlation (0.5 0.8) were noted between Turbidity- Conductivity, Turbidity-Salinity, Turbidity, TDS, TSS conductivity, TSS-Salinity, TSS, TDS, COD, conductivity, salinity, COD, COD-TDS. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) also highlighted groundwater mineralization events of this landfill and possible pollution by organic matter

Multi sensor platform on plastic foil for environmental monitoring
AbstractWe report on multi-sensor platforms on plastic foils for environmental monitoring. Polymer-based capacitive sensors for humidity and volatile organic compounds (VOC)s, semiconducting metal oxides (MOX) based chemoresistive sensors for reducing/oxidizing gases and a Pt thermometer have been integrated together on a polyimide sheet and their performances characterized. The MOX gas sensors exhibited good sensitivity to CO and ethanol. The differential operation of the capacitive humidity sensors resulted in increased signals and reduced response/recovery times
Elliptic integral evaluations of Bessel moments
We record what is known about the closed forms for various Bessel function
moments arising in quantum field theory, condensed matter theory and other
parts of mathematical physics. More generally, we develop formulae for
integrals of products of six or fewer Bessel functions. In consequence, we are
able to discover and prove closed forms for with integers and , obtaining new results
for the even moments and . We also derive new closed forms
for the odd moments with and for with , relating the latter to Green functions on
hexagonal, diamond and cubic lattices. We conjecture the values of
, make substantial progress on the evaluation of ,
and and report more limited progress regarding
, and . In the process, we obtain 8
conjectural evaluations, each of which has been checked to 1200 decimal places.
One of these lies deep in 4- dimensional quantum field theory and two are
probably provable by delicate combinatorics. There remains a hard core of five
conjectures whose proofs would be most instructive, to mathematicians and
physicists alike.Comment: 51 pages, 1 Postscript figure, uses amsmath.sty, added reference
Transport and gas sensing properties of In2O3 nanocrystalline thick films: A Hall effect based approach
Undoped nanosized In2O3 with n-type conduction was produced in both polymorphic forms (cubic and rhombohedral) and deposited by screen-printing as thick films. These films show high sensitivity to low O3 concentration levels. They have been investigated by four point conductance and Hall effect measurements under sensor operating conditions (elevated temperature and ozone exposure). The effective values of the charge carrier concentration and mobility have been calculated from the experimental records using the recipe for the single crystals. The response to O3 is discussed in the frame of the standard models for gas sensors. The observed deviations from the model are explained in connection with the film crystalline structure and microscopic parameters spread
Basics of oxygen and SnO2 interaction; work function change and conductivity measurements
The interaction of oxygen and nanocrystalline SnO2 has been investigated by means of simultaneous work function change and resistance measurements. Various oxygen concentrations between 50 ppm and 6000 ppm have been dosed at two different temperatures. At 400 °C, only ionic species have been identified. However, at 200 °C dipolar species play the major role reflected by a massive decrease in electron affinity
