ExoMol molecular line lists - XVI: The rotation-vibration spectrum of hot H2_2S

    Get PDF
This work presents the AYT2 line list: a comprehensive list of 114 million 1^{1}H2_232^{32}S vibration-rotation transitions computed using an empirically-adjusted potential energy surface and an {\it ab initio} dipole moment surface. The line list gives complete coverage up to 11000 \cm\ (wavelengths longer than 0.91 μ\mum) for temperatures up to 2000 K. Room temperature spectra can be simulated up to 20000 \cm\ (0.5 μ\mum) but the predictions at visible wavelengths are less reliable. AYT2 is made available in electronic form as supplementary data to this article and at \url{www.exomol.com}.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, 10 table

Market Power and/or Efficiency: An Application to U.S. Food Processing

    Get PDF
This article separates oligopoly-power and cost-efficiency effects of changes in industrial concentration and assesses their impact on output prices in 32 food-processing industries. Empirical results indicate that although concentration induces cost efficiency in one-third of the industries, oligopoly-power effects either dominate cost efficiency or reinforce inefficiency, resulting in higher output prices in most industries. The article also provides fresh econometric estimates of oligopoly power and economies of size for the industries in question.industrial concentration, economies of scale, industrial organization, oligopoly power, food processing, Agribusiness, Industrial Organization, Productivity Analysis, L00, L11, L13, L66,

The effect of drought on the growth and development of oil palm - a review / Mohammad Azzam A. Haris

    Get PDF
Drought can caused water deficiency which can interrupt the growth and development of oil palm. The drought or water shortage can inhibit the growth and development of leaf, fruit and root. Oil palm needs an average rainfall of 150 mm/month, with dry periods not more than 2 to 3 months. The relative air humidity must be above 75% in the whole year. The average for a minimum annual rainfall about 1800 mm which is at optimal rate and can raise up to 2500 mm without give any effect . There are several factors that can causes drought which are low precipitation, dry season, El-Nino, erosion and human activities and climate changes. All this factors will give an effect on growth and development of oil palm. The water shortage or drought can lead to growth inhibition of leaf, fruit and root of oil palm. Short period of drought or temperatures below 18°C does not significantly affect vegetative growth but reduced yield .The drought can make reduce the production of oil palm by reduced oil palm fruit weight. Oil palm smallholder and estate can reduce the effect of drought by creating a pond and water tank reservoir is necessary for drought protection

The Reality of Political Culture in Jordan after Twenty Years of Political Openness

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to explore the reality of the political culture in Jordan after twenty years of political openness by identifying the most important features of contemporary Jordanian political culture. In addition, the study aims to examine the main factors that shape this political culture. To build the argument on a solid ground, the study raises some significant questions about the reality of the Jordanian political culture such as: has political culture changed significantly since 1989 (after the political openness)?, what are the main factors that contributed in shaping the political culture in Jordan?, and what is the main type of political culture that clearly prevails in the society?. The study is carried out by using the descriptive analytical approach, as a method for examining the findings of the survey through distribution of 400 questionnaires to five groups of political elite in Jordan. The study concludes that there cannot be a real democratic system in Jordan without the establishment and consolidation of democratic values in the political culture of Jordanian citizens. Another conclusion of the study is that traditional political culture is still prevailing in Jordanian society, which is social, tribal, and family ties prominence despite the passage of twenty years on the political liberalization

Circular and near-circular polarization states of evanescent monochromatic light fields in total internal reflection

    Get PDF
Conditions for the production of near-circular polarization states of the evanescent field present in the rarer medium in total internal reflection of incident monochromatic p-polarized light at a dielectric-dielectric planar interface are determined. Such conditions are satisfied if high-index (\u3e3.2) transparent prism materials (e.g., GaP and Ge) are used at angles of incidence well above the critical angle but sufficiently below grazing incidence. Furthermore, elliptical polarization of incident light with nonzero p and s components can be tailored to cause circular polarization of the resultant tangential electric field in the plane of the interface or circular polarization of the transverse electric field in a plane normal to the direction of propagation of the evanescent wave. Such polarization control of the evanescent field is significant, e.g., in the fluorescent excitation of molecules adsorbed at solid-liquid and solid-gas interfaces by total internal reflection

New type of ellipsometry in infrared spectroscopy: The double-reference method

We have developed a conceptually new type of ellipsometry which allows the determination of the complex refractive index by simultaneously measuring the unpolarized normal-incidence reflectivity relative to the vacuum and to another reference media. From these two quantities the complex optical response can be directly obtained without Kramers-Kronig transformation. Due to its transparency and large refractive index over a broad range of the spectrum, from the far-infrared to the soft ultraviolet region, diamond can be ideally used as a second reference. The experimental arrangement is rather simple compared to other ellipsometric techniques.Comment: submitted to Appl. Phys. Let

Optimal beam splitters for the division-of-amplitude photopolarimeter

    Get PDF
Optimal optical parameters of the beam splitter that is used in the division-of-amplitude photopolarimeter are determined. These are (1) 50%–50% split ratio of the all-dielectric beam splitter, (2) differential phase shifts in reflection and transmission Δr and Δt that differ by ±π/2, and (3) ellipsometric parameters (ψr, ψt)= (27.368°, 62.632°) or (62.632°, 27.368°). It is also shown that for any nonabsorbing beam splitter that splits incident unpolarized light equally, the relationship ψr+ψt=π/2 is always satisfied
