Regularity and stability of electrostatic solutions in Kaluza-Klein theory

    Get PDF
We investigate the family of electrostatic spherically symmetric solutions of the five-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory. Besides black holes and wormholes, a new class of geodesically complete solutions is identified. A monopole perturbation is carried out, enabling us to prove analytically the stability of a large class of solutions, including all black holes and neutral solutions.Comment: 2 pages, "mprocl.sty" with LATEX 2.09, contribution to the 9th Marcel Grossmann meeting (MG9), Rome, July 200

Electrostatic solutions in Kaluza-Klein theory: geometry and stability

    Get PDF
We investigate the family of electrostatic spherically symmetric solutions of the five-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory. Both charged and neutral cases are considered. The analysis of the solutions, through their geometrical properties, reveals the existence of black holes, wormholes and naked singularities. A new class of regular solutions is identified. A monopole perturbation study of all these solutions is carried out, enabling us to prove analytically the stability of large classes of solutions. In particular, the black hole solutions are stable, while for the regular solutions the stability analysis leads to an eigenvalue problem.Comment: Latex file, 21 page

    Kaluza-Klein and Gauss-Bonnet cosmic strings

    Get PDF
We make a systematic investigation of stationary cylindrically symmetric solutions to the five-dimensional Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet equations. Apart from the five-dimensional neutral cosmic string metric, we find two new exact solutions which qualify as cosmic strings, one corresponding to an electrically charged cosmic string, the other to an extended superconducting cosmic string surrounding a charged core. In both cases, test particles are deflected away from the singular line source. We extend both kinds of solutions to exact multi-cosmic string solutions.Comment: 26 pages, LaTex, no figure

Beyond the Singularity of the 2-D Charged Black Hole

Two dimensional charged black holes in string theory can be obtained as exact (SL(2,R)xU(1))/U(1) quotient CFTs. The geometry of the quotient is induced from that of the group, and in particular includes regions beyond the black hole singularities. Moreover, wavefunctions in such black holes are obtained from gauge invariant vertex operators in the SL(2,R) CFT, hence their behavior beyond the singularity is determined. When the black hole is charged we find that the wavefunctions are smooth at the singularities. Unlike the uncharged case, scattering waves prepared beyond the singularity are not fully reflected; part of the wave is transmitted through the singularity. Hence, the physics outside the horizon of a charged black hole is sensitive to conditions set behind the past singularity.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures; v2: refs added, minor typos corrected; v3: references on the infinite blue shift at the inner horizon and minor corrections adde

Non-extremal black holes from the generalised r-map

We review the timelike dimensional reduction of a class of five-dimensional theories that generalises 5D, N = 2 supergravity coupled to vector multiplets. As an application we construct instanton solutions to the four-dimensional Euclidean theory, and investigate the criteria for solutions to lift to static non-extremal black holes in five dimensions. We focus specifically on two classes of models: STU-like models, and models with a block diagonal target space metric. For STU-like models the second order equations of motion of the four-dimensional theory can be solved explicitly, and we obtain the general solution. For block diagonal models we find a restricted class of solutions, where the number of independent scalar fields depends on the number of blocks. When lifting these solutions to five dimensions we show, by explicit calculation, that one obtains static non-extremal black holes with scalar fields that take finite values on the horizon only if the number of integration constants reduces by exactly half.Comment: 22 pages. Generalized Weyl solutions in d=5 Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory: the static black ring

We argue that the Weyl coordinates and the rod-structure employed to construct static axisymmetric solutions in higher dimensional Einstein gravity can be generalized to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. As a concrete application of the general formalism, we present numerical evidence for the existence of static black ring solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in five spacetime dimensions. They approach asymptotically the Minkowski background and are supported against collapse by a conical singularity in the form of a disk. An interesting feature of these solutions is that the Gauss-Bonnet term reduces the conical excess of the static black rings. Analogous to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black strings, for a given mass the static black rings exist up to a maximal value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant αâ€Č\alpha'. Moreover, in the limit of large ring radius, the suitably rescaled black ring maximal value of αâ€Č\alpha' and the black string maximal value of αâ€Č\alpha' agree.Comment: 43 pages, 14 figure

Higher Dimensional Cylindrical or Kasner Type Electrovacuum Solutions

We consider a D dimensional Kasner type diagonal spacetime where metric functions depend only on a single coordinate and electromagnetic field shares the symmetries of spacetime. These solutions can describe static cylindrical or cosmological Einstein-Maxwell vacuum spacetimes. We mainly focus on electrovacuum solutions and four different types of solutions are obtained in which one of them has no four dimensional counterpart. We also consider the properties of the general solution corresponding to the exterior field of a charged line mass and discuss its several properties. Although it resembles the same form with four dimensional one, there is a difference on the range of the solutions for fixed signs of the parameters. General magnetic field vacuum solution are also briefly discussed, which reduces to Bonnor-Melvin magnetic universe for a special choice of the parameters. The Kasner forms of the general solution are also presented for the cylindrical or cosmological cases.Comment: 16 pages, Revtex. Text and references are extended, Published versio

Static Anisotropic Solutions in f(T) Theory

In a previously work, we undertook a static and anisotropic content in f(T)f(T) theory and obtained new spherically symmetric solutions considering a constant torsion and some particular conditions for the pressure. In this paper, still in the framework of f(T)f(T) theory, new spherically symmetric solutions are obtained, first considering the general case of an isotropic fluid and later the anisotropic content case in which the generalized conditions for the matter content are considered such that the energy density, the radial and tangential pressures depend on the algebraic f(T)f(T) and its derivative fT(T)f_{T}(T). Moreover, we obtain the algebraic function f(T)f(T) through the reconstruction method for two cases and also study a polytropic model for the stellar structure.Comment: 23 pages, Published in Euro.
