The impact of non-performing loans on the profitability of listed Euro-Mediterranean commercial banks

An earlier version of this article has been presented in ICABE 2019 www.icabe.grPurpose: To analyze the impact of NPLs on listed commercial bank’s profitability, in particular their ROA (Return on Assets), in the Euro-Mediterranean area. We aim to determine whether the change in the level of NPLs in listed commercial banks is either positively or negatively impacting the ROA of the concerned banks. Furthermore, knowing that the liquidity and the solvency of a bank are both equally important to maintain a robust financial position, a Liquidity (LQDT) and Solvency (SLVT) ratio were considered to help explain the variances with NPLs and ROA. Design/Methodology/Approach: We adopted a purposive research design using panel data (2013-2017) from data published on Thomson Reuters Eikon or annual reports of the 35 listed commercial banks in the Euro-Mediterranean region. We used descriptive statistics and four regression models, namely; the Pooled OLS regression model, Fixed Effects (FE), Random Effects (RE) and the Arellano-Bond (AB), through STATA/IC 15.1. Findings: Findings show that there is a negative impact of NPLs on ROA, indicating that problematic loans negatively impact listed commercial bank’s profitability in the EuroMediterranean region. Also, it was indicated that the Solvency ratio (SLVT) is the only controlling factor that can significantly explain variances within NPLs and ROA. Practical Implications: These results carry with them significant consequences for the bank’s financial stability within the Euro-Mediterranean countries and the role of the risk management function of listed commercial banks.peer-reviewe

Competing loyalties: Dilemmas arising from violent outbreak in a planned research site, South Sudan

Researchers choose field sites for a wide range of theoretical, ideological, interpersonal or pragmatic reasons, usually combined. Some of these rationales are acknowledged, while others remain unacknowledged and hidden from either external or the researcher’s own reflection. However, where these sites focus on conflict or post-conflict settings, the disruptive influence of violence brings with it the expectation of volatility. In this post I examine the reasons underlying my choice of South Sudan as the field site for my PhD research, which were exposed when, as a result of tragically renewed conflict in South Sudan in December 2013, I had to review my approach. Benidorm e Balneário Camboriú: comparações entre ícones do turismo de sol e praia urbano

Benidorm, na costa alicantina, na Espanha, e Balneário Camboriú, no sul do Brasil, são cidades onde o turismo de sol e praia assumiu características urbanas. Têm similitudes paisagísticas e funcionais, pelos seus skylines e por apresentarem alojamentos turísticos e de segunda residência. Buscando entender comparativamente as duas cidades, analisaram-se suas relações com o território e o ambiente, acompanhando a evolução urbana de cada uma, relacionando-as aos processos sócio-econômicos, culturais e aspectos institucionais que permitiram e orientaram seus desenvolvimentos. Num recorte morfológico, analisou-se o tecido urbano, em especial das primeiras franjas junto à costa, comparando-se alguns aspectos visíveis dos tecidos urbanos que estão relacionados com a ambiência e a qualidade de vida nesses assentamentos. Percebeu-se que os tecidos urbanos de cada cidade, tiveram processos de ordenação territorial diferenciados que se refletem em ambientes urbanos de qualidades também diferentes.Benidorm, in alicantina coast, Spain, and Camboriú in southern Brazil, are cities where the sun and beach tourism has developed with urban model. They have similarities landscape and functional by their skylines and by present tourist and second home accommodations. Seeking understand the two cities comparatively, we analyzed their relations with the territory and the environment, following the urban evolution of each one, relating them to the social-economic processes, cultural and institutional aspects that led and guided their development. In a morphological approach, the urban tissue was analyzed, especially the first fringes along the coast, compared to some visible aspects of the urban fabric that are related to the ambience and quality of life in these settlements. It was noticed that the urban fabric of each city, had distinct territorial ordering processes that are reflected in urban environments also different qualities

INTERATIVIDADE EDUCACIONAL CIBERNÉTICA NO ENSINO DA SOCIOLOGIA DE UMA ESCOLA PÚBLICA DE EDUCAÇÃO BÁSICA

TCC (graduação) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas, Curso de Ciências Sociais.Este Trabalho de Conclusão de Licenciatura – TCL está pautado na realização de um artigo, no qual se pretende estabelecer um estudo das pesquisas efetivadas durante as experiências obtidas ao longo da graduação em Ciências Sociais, quando Admitido em Caráter Temporário (ACT), pela secretaria de Educação de Santa Catarina. Desta forma, contratado na função de professor de Sociologia, na rede pública da grande Florianópolis, pude exercer a mediação entre o conhecimento acumulado historicamente pela sociologia, na formação dos alunos, e sobre essa experiência é que se desenvolveu esta reflexão sobre a inserção de tecnologia no cotidiano escolar, procurando entender como se processa a interatividade dos alunos com relação ao uso da Internet, sobretudo com a utilização do Facebook, como instrumento de “interatividade cibernética cultural”, utilizada como ferramenta pedagógico-didática no ensino-aprendizagem, para então discutir qual o sentido na apropriação dos meios de comunicação de massa interativos no contexto educacional, o qual passa por um processo inexorável de transformações tecnológicas. Este projeto foi orientado por princípios correlatos à noção mínima de democratização do conhecimento, tendo em vista que na atuação como docente o pesquisador atuou no sentido de que os educandos se percebessem como protagonistas na construção coletiva dos saberes. Outro aspecto a se destacar diz respeito é a utilização do instrumental da pesquisa-ação participativa, o qual garantiu o distanciamento suficiente à reflexão que se pretendeu sobre um campo extremamente imbricado com o fazer profissional do pesquisador. Outra característica pertinente desta pesquisa é o relacionamento recíproco entre pesquisa na prática aprimorada da sala de aula, por meio da qual se pode compreender a praxis, mas também se obtém uma compreensão mais racional da rotina educacional, de modo que o desenvolvimento é o seu contexto, o meio e a finalidade principal da compreensão, ou seja, com a pesquisa-ação se possibilita o estudo de uma situação social com o intuito de melhorar a qualidade da ação dentro de seu próprio contexto. Entre os resultados obtidos destaca-se: prática social da criação dos Grupos de Interatividade Cultural esteve aquém das expectativas do professor, revelando ínfima agência dos educandos; além da quase total inadimplência na participação espontânea, os alunos em sua totalidade realizaram suas tarefas acadêmicas utilizando o método copiar e colar, e não houve sequer a curiosidade como inquietação indagadora, tampouco existiu a autoconsciência da realidade social; resultando na confirmação das teses que conformam a educação ao poder da dominação tecnológica como recurso do entretenimento à boa parte dos jovens

Keith Stirling : An introduction to his life and examination of his music

This study introduces the life and examines the music of Australian jazz trumpeter Keith Stirling (1938-2003). The paper discusses the importance and position of Stirling in the jazz culture of Australian music, introducing key concepts that were influential not only to the development of Australian jazz but also in his life. Subsequently, a discussion of Stirling’s metaphoric tendencies provides an understanding of his philosophical perspectives toward improvisation as an art form. Thereafter, a discourse of the research methodology that was used and the resources that were collected throughout the study introduce a control group of transcriptions. These transcriptions provide an origin of phrases with which to discuss aspects of Stirling’s improvisational style. Instrumental approaches and harmonic concepts are then discussed and exemplified through the analysis of the transcribed phrases. Stirling’s instrumental techniques and harmonic concepts are examined by means of his own and student’s hand written notes and quotes from lesson recordings that took place in the early 1980s
