Post Newtonian SPH
We introduce an adaptation of the well known Tree+SPH numerical scheme to
Post Newtonian (PN) hydrodynamics and gravity. Our code solves the (0+1+2.5)PN
equations. These equations include Newtonian hydrodynamics and gravity (0PN),
the first order relativistic corrections to those (1PN) and the lowest order
gravitational radiation terms (2.5PN). We test various aspects of our code
using analytically solvable test problems. We then proceed to study the 1PN
effects on binary neutron star coalescence by comparing calculations with and
without the 1PN terms. We find that the effect of the 1PN terms is rather
small. The largest effect arises with a stiff equation of state for which the
maximum rest mass density increases. This could induce black hole formation.

Conformally Flat Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics: Application to Neutron Star Mergers
We present a new 3D SPH code which solves the general relativistic field +
hydrodynamics equations in the conformally flat approximation. Several test
cases are considered to test different aspects of the code. We finally apply
then the code to the coalescence of a neutron star binary system. The neutron
stars are modeled by a polytropic equation of state (EoS) with adiabatic
indices , and . We calculate the
gravitational wave signals, luminosities and frequency spectra by employing the
quadrupole approximation for emission and back reaction in the slow motion

Estimating survival in patients with gastrointestinal cancers and brain metastases: An update of the graded prognostic assessment for gastrointestinal cancers (GI-GPA).
BackgroundPatients with gastrointestinal cancers and brain metastases (BM) represent a unique and heterogeneous population. Our group previously published the Diagnosis-Specific Graded Prognostic Assessment (DS-GPA) for patients with GI cancers (GI-GPA) (1985-2007, n = 209). The purpose of this study is to update the GI-GPA based on a larger contemporary database.MethodsAn IRB-approved consortium database analysis was performed using a multi-institutional (18), multi-national (3) cohort of 792 patients with gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, with newly-diagnosed BM diagnosed between 1/1/2006 and 12/31/2017. Survival was measured from date of first treatment for BM. Multiple Cox regression was used to select and weight prognostic factors in proportion to their hazard ratios. These factors were incorporated into the updated GI-GPA.ResultsMedian survival (MS) varied widely by primary site and other prognostic factors. Four significant factors (KPS, age, extracranial metastases and number of BM) were used to formulate the updated GI-GPA. Overall MS for this cohort remains poor; 8 months. MS by GPA was 3, 7, 11 and 17 months for GPA 0-1, 1.5-2, 2.5-3.0 and 3.5-4.0, respectively. >30% present in the worst prognostic group (GI-GPA of ≤1.0).ConclusionsBrain metastases are not uncommon in GI cancer patients and MS varies widely among them. This updated GI-GPA index improves our ability to estimate survival for these patients and will be useful for therapy selection, end-of-life decision-making and stratification for future clinical trials. Identidad étnica y redes personales entre jóvenes de Sarajevo
After fieldwork conducted among young people in Sarajevo, we found a relation between the discourses sustained by them and the ethnic categories they use to classify people and to identify themselves. Also we have found that people self-affiliated as "Bosnians" play an important role in the network of multiethnic relationships, in which strong ties, surprisingly, are still very important. Finally we found a relationship between the composition of personal networks and the ethnic discourses that are maintained.Después de un trabajo de campo realizado con un grupo de jóvenes en Sarajevo, hemos constatado la existencia de una relación entre los discursos que sostienen y las categorías étnicas que utilizan tanto para clasificar a los demás como para auto-identificarse. Asimismo hemos encontrado que los jóvenes que se autodenominan "Bosnios" juegan un rol importante en la red de relaciones multiétnicas, en la que los lazos fuertes, sorprendentemente, son muy importantes. Finalmente hemos hallado una relación entre la composición de las redes personales y los discursos étnicos que se sostienen. Vivimos, o creemos vivir, en múltiples "comunidades", imaginadas o no. Al mismo tiempo, el individuo y no el lugar, la familia o el grupo, se sitúa en el centro de la vida social y de las comunicaciones (Cf. Wellman, 2001). En este contexto, inducido por el avance del capitalismo flexible (Castells, 1996), pensamos que para entender adecuadamente la identidad o identidades postuladas por los individuos es necesario estudiar las redes personales y su dinámica. Desde esta perspectiva no podemos hablar de "etnias" o "multietnicidad" sin más precisiones, pues son conceptos basados en una concepción esencialista y estática de la identidad individual. El concepto de "sociedad multiétnica" es utilizado de una manera engañosamente progresista y objetiva, pues lo que en realidad legitima es la existencia de diferencias esenciales entre personas, alejando en lugar de acercar. Sin embargo, somos plenamente conscientes que los discursos esencialistas de la identidad étnica son omnipresentes, con enormes efectos políticos e individuales. Que planteemos que la concepción esencialista de la identidad sea inapropiada desde un punto de vista académico, no significa que ésta no se utilice políticamente y por lo tanto tenga consecuencias formidables en las relaciones sociales. Precisamente el estudio de las redes personales nos permite situarnos en una perspectiva que no utiliza con pretensiones analíticas conceptos "folk", como son los de "etnia", "pueblo" o "nación", sino que los sitúa en el terreno de los discursos sustentados por los actores (y los estados y medios de comunicación) y nos permite contextualizarlos mediante conceptos etic, es decir, impuestos por los investigadores. Sólo así podemos superar las tautologías que abundan en los discursos étnicos
Nuclear astrophysics: the unfinished quest for the origin of the elements
Half a century has passed since the foundation of nuclear astrophysics. Since
then, this discipline has reached its maturity. Today, nuclear astrophysics
constitutes a multidisciplinary crucible of knowledge that combines the
achievements in theoretical astrophysics, observational astronomy,
cosmochemistry and nuclear physics. New tools and developments have
revolutionized our understanding of the origin of the elements: supercomputers
have provided astrophysicists with the required computational capabilities to
study the evolution of stars in a multidimensional framework; the emergence of
high-energy astrophysics with space-borne observatories has opened new windows
to observe the Universe, from a novel panchromatic perspective; cosmochemists
have isolated tiny pieces of stardust embedded in primitive meteorites, giving
clues on the processes operating in stars as well as on the way matter
condenses to form solids; and nuclear physicists have measured reactions near
stellar energies, through the combined efforts using stable and radioactive ion
beam facilities. This review provides comprehensive insight into the nuclear
history of the Universe and related topics: starting from the Big Bang, when
the ashes from the primordial explosion were transformed to hydrogen, helium,
and few trace elements, to the rich variety of nucleosynthesis mechanisms and
sites in the Universe. Particular attention is paid to the hydrostatic
processes governing the evolution of low-mass stars, red giants and asymptotic
giant-branch stars, as well as to the explosive nucleosynthesis occurring in
core-collapse and thermonuclear supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, classical novae,

Hydrothermal deposition of CdS on vertically aligned ZnO nanorods for photoelectrochemical solar cell application
CdS/ZnO nanorods composite nanofilms were successfully synthesized via hydrothermal method on indium doped tin oxide glass substrates. Sequentially deposited CdS formed cauliflower like nanostructures on vertically aligned ZnO nanorods. The morphological, compositional, structural and optical properties of the films were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. Photoelectrochemical conversion efficiencies were evaluated by photocurrent measurements in a mixture of Na2S and Na2SO3 akaline aqueous solution. The amount of deposit, as well as the diameter and crystallinity of the CdS cauliflower were found to increase with growth time. CdS/ZnO nanorods composite exhibited greater photocurrent response than ZnO nanorod arrays. Besides, the composite film with 90 min of growth duration displayed the highest photocurrent density which is nearly four times greater than plain ZnO nanorods under the illumination of halogen light. The result exhibited remarkable photoconversion efficiency (η) of 1.92 %
