VLBI Detections of Parsec-Scale Nonthermal Jets in Radio-Loud Broad Absorption Line Quasars
We conducted radio detection observations at 8.4 GHz for 22 radio-loud broad
absorption line (BAL) quasars, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
(SDSS) Third Data Release, by a very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI)
technique. The VLBI instrument we used was developed by the Optically ConnecTed
Array for VLBI Exploration project (OCTAVE), which is operated as a subarray of
the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN). We aimed at selecting BAL quasars with
nonthermal jets suitable for measuring their orientation angles and ages by
subsequent detailed VLBI imaging studies to evaluate two controversial issues
of whether BAL quasars are viewed nearly edge-on, and of whether BAL quasars
are in a short-lived evolutionary phase of quasar population. We detected 20
out of 22 sources using the OCTAVE baselines, implying brightness temperatures
greater than 10^5 K, which presumably come from nonthermal jets. Hence, BAL
outflows and nonthermal jets can be generated simultaneously in these central
engines. We also found four inverted-spectrum sources, which are interpreted as
Doppler-beamed, pole-on-viewed relativistic jet sources or young radio sources:
single edge-on geometry cannot describe all BAL quasars. We discuss the
implications of the OCTAVE observations for investigations for the orientation
and evolutionary stage of BAL quasars.Comment: 10 pages, no figure, 3 tables, accepted for publication in PAS
Fundamental Parameters of the Milky Way Galaxy Based on VLBI astrometry
We present analyses to determine the fundamental parameters of the Galaxy
based on VLBI astrometry of 52 Galactic maser sources obtained with VERA, VLBA
and EVN. We model the Galaxy's structure with a set of parameters including the
Galaxy center distance R_0, the angular rotation velocity at the LSR Omega_0,
mean peculiar motion of the sources with respect to Galactic rotation (U_src,
V_src, W_src), rotation-curve shape index, and the V component of the Solar
peculiar motions V_sun. Based on a Markov chain Monte Carlo method, we find
that the Galaxy center distance is constrained at a 5% level to be R_0 = 8.05
+/- 0.45 kpc, where the error bar includes both statistical and systematic
errors. We also find that the two components of the source peculiar motion
U_src and W_src are fairly small compared to the Galactic rotation velocity,
being U_src = 1.0 +/- 1.5 km/s and W_src = -1.4 +/- 1.2 km/s. Also, the
rotation curve shape is found to be basically flat between Galacto-centric
radii of 4 and 13 kpc. On the other hand, we find a linear relation between
V_src and V_sun as V_src = V_sun -19 (+/- 2) km/s, suggesting that the value of
V_src is fully dependent on the adopted value of V_sun. Regarding the rotation
speed in the vicinity of the Sun, we also find a strong correlation between
Omega_0 and V_sun. We find that the angular velocity of the Sun, Omega_sun,
which is defined as Omega_sun = Omega_0 + V_sun/R_0, can be well constrained
with the best estimate of Omega_sun = 31.09 +/- 0.78 km/s/kpc. This corresponds
to Theta_0 = 238 +/- 14 km/s if one adopts the above value of R_0 and recent
determination of V_sun ~ 12 km/s.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, PASJ in pres
Protocol for a multicentre, prospective, cohort study to investigate patient satisfaction and quality of life after immediate breast reconstruction in Japan: the SAQLA study
Introduction The aim of breast reconstruction (BR) is to improve patients' health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Therefore, measuring patient-reported outcomes (PROs) would clarify the value and impact of BR on a patient's life and thus would provide evidence-based information to help decision-making. The Satisfaction and Quality of Life After Immediate Breast Reconstruction study aimed to investigate satisfaction and HRQOL in Japanese patients with breast cancer who undergo immediate breast reconstruction (IBR). Methods and analysis This ongoing prospective, observational multicentre study will assess 406 patients who had unilateral breast cancer and underwent mastectomy and IBR, and were recruited from April 2018 to July 2019. All participants were recruited from seven hospitals: Okayama University Hospital, Iwate Medical University Hospital, The Cancer Institute Hospital of Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research, Showa University Hospital, University of Tsukuba Hospital, Osaka University Hospital and Yokohama City University Medical Center. The patients will be followed up for 36 months postoperatively. The primary endpoint of this study will be the time-dependent changes in BREAST-Q satisfaction with breast subscale scores for 12 months after reconstructive surgery, which will be collected via an electronic PRO system. Ethics and dissemination This study will be performed in accordance with the Ethical Guidelines for Medical and Health Research Involving Human Subjects published by Japan's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the modified Act on the Protection of Personal Information and the Declaration of Helsinki. This study protocol was approved by the institutional ethics committee at the Okayama University Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry, on 2 February 2018 (1801-039) and all other participating sites. The findings of this trial will be submitted to an international peer-reviewed journal
Design of Hanshin Electric Railway Naruo Station with Plank Sheets
This paper reports a Japanese railway station’s design that consists of minimal architectural materials and a structural experiment with plank sheets as an element of shell structure. The station’s space is created by unifying walls and ceilings with plank sheets that do not require any support. Stairs, escalators, elevators, and signs are clearly visible as symbolic components for the passengers
Broad Epigenetic Signature of Maternal Care in the Brain of Adult Rats
BACKGROUND: Maternal care is associated with long-term effects on behavior and epigenetic programming of the NR3C1 (GLUCOCORTICOID RECEPTOR) gene in the hippocampus of both rats and humans. In the rat, these effects are reversed by cross-fostering, demonstrating that they are defined by epigenetic rather than genetic processes. However, epigenetic changes at a single gene promoter are unlikely to account for the range of outcomes and the persistent change in expression of hundreds of additional genes in adult rats in response to differences in maternal care. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We examine here using high-density oligonucleotide array the state of DNA methylation, histone acetylation and gene expression in a 7 million base pair region of chromosome 18 containing the NR3C1 gene in the hippocampus of adult rats. Natural variations in maternal care are associated with coordinate epigenetic changes spanning over a hundred kilobase pairs. The adult offspring of high compared to low maternal care mothers show epigenetic changes in promoters, exons, and gene ends associated with higher transcriptional activity across many genes within the locus examined. Other genes in this region remain unchanged, indicating a clustered yet specific and patterned response. Interestingly, the chromosomal region containing the protocadherin-α, -β, and -γ (Pcdh) gene families implicated in synaptogenesis show the highest differential response to maternal care. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The results suggest for the first time that the epigenetic response to maternal care is coordinated in clusters across broad genomic areas. The data indicate that the epigenetic response to maternal care involves not only single candidate gene promoters but includes transcriptional and intragenic sequences, as well as those residing distantly from transcription start sites. These epigenetic and transcriptional profiles constitute the first tiling microarray data set exploring the relationship between epigenetic modifications and RNA expression in both protein coding and non-coding regions across a chromosomal locus in the mammalian brain

This research clarifies how much exercise performers hold kinesthesia-like movement analogies, individually sensitive kinesthesia, and exercise materials as movement analogies in a forward handspring. Moreover, this study examines the relationship between exercise materials togethr with kinesthesia held by exercise performers and their performance. The result of this study indicates that each exercise performer has a variety of exercise materials and that the performer recognizes movements by his/her sense from among these exercise materials. Furthermore, according to the result, if an exercise performer does not have any exercise material that is regarded as a movement analogy, the exercise performer does not exhibit a high-skill performance. From these results, it is indicated that there is a risk that exercise materials may include unsuitable movement analogies for learning a movement. In relation to the kinesthesia, it is indicated that exercise performers recognize their movements as kinesthesia, but that some of them recognize their movements improperly
Post-intervention Status in Patients With Refractory Myasthenia Gravis Treated With Eculizumab During REGAIN and Its Open-Label Extension
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether eculizumab helps patients with anti-acetylcholine receptor-positive (AChR+) refractory generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) achieve the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA) post-intervention status of minimal manifestations (MM), we assessed patients' status throughout REGAIN (Safety and Efficacy of Eculizumab in AChR+ Refractory Generalized Myasthenia Gravis) and its open-label extension. METHODS: Patients who completed the REGAIN randomized controlled trial and continued into the open-label extension were included in this tertiary endpoint analysis. Patients were assessed for the MGFA post-intervention status of improved, unchanged, worse, MM, and pharmacologic remission at defined time points during REGAIN and through week 130 of the open-label study. RESULTS: A total of 117 patients completed REGAIN and continued into the open-label study (eculizumab/eculizumab: 56; placebo/eculizumab: 61). At week 26 of REGAIN, more eculizumab-treated patients than placebo-treated patients achieved a status of improved (60.7% vs 41.7%) or MM (25.0% vs 13.3%; common OR: 2.3; 95% CI: 1.1-4.5). After 130 weeks of eculizumab treatment, 88.0% of patients achieved improved status and 57.3% of patients achieved MM status. The safety profile of eculizumab was consistent with its known profile and no new safety signals were detected. CONCLUSION: Eculizumab led to rapid and sustained achievement of MM in patients with AChR+ refractory gMG. These findings support the use of eculizumab in this previously difficult-to-treat patient population. CLINICALTRIALSGOV IDENTIFIER: REGAIN, NCT01997229; REGAIN open-label extension, NCT02301624. CLASSIFICATION OF EVIDENCE: This study provides Class II evidence that, after 26 weeks of eculizumab treatment, 25.0% of adults with AChR+ refractory gMG achieved MM, compared with 13.3% who received placebo

Why verbalization of facial features increases false positive responses on visually-similar distractors: A computational exploration of verbal overshadowing
Why Verbalization of Non-Verbal Memory Reduces Recognition Accuracy: A Computational Approach to Verbal Overshadowing
<div><p>Verbal overshadowing refers to a phenomenon whereby verbalization of non-verbal stimuli (e.g., facial features) during the maintenance phase (after the target information is no longer available from the sensory inputs) impairs subsequent non-verbal recognition accuracy. Two primary mechanisms have been proposed for verbal overshadowing, namely the recoding interference hypothesis, and the transfer-inappropriate processing shift. The former assumes that verbalization renders non-verbal representations less accurate. In contrast, the latter assumes that verbalization shifts processing operations to a verbal mode and increases the chance of failing to return to non-verbal, face-specific processing operations (i.e., intact, yet inaccessible non-verbal representations). To date, certain psychological phenomena have been advocated as inconsistent with the recoding-interference hypothesis. These include a decline in non-verbal memory performance following verbalization of non-target faces, and occasional failures to detect a significant correlation between the accuracy of verbal descriptions and the non-verbal memory performance. Contrary to these arguments against the recoding interference hypothesis, however, the present computational model instantiated core processing principles of the recoding interference hypothesis to simulate face recognition, and nonetheless successfully reproduced these behavioral phenomena, as well as the standard verbal overshadowing. These results demonstrate the plausibility of the recoding interference hypothesis to account for verbal overshadowing, and suggest there is no need to implement separable mechanisms (e.g., operation-specific representations, different processing principles, etc.). In addition, detailed inspections of the internal processing of the model clarified how verbalization rendered internal representations less accurate and how such representations led to reduced recognition accuracy, thereby offering a computationally grounded explanation. Finally, the model also provided an explanation as to why some studies have failed to report verbal overshadowing. Thus, the present study suggests it is not constructive to discuss whether verbal overshadowing exists or not in an all-or-none manner, and instead suggests a better experimental paradigm to further explore this phenomenon.</p></div
