Frictional Unemployment on Labor Flow Networks
We develop an alternative theory to the aggregate matching function in which
workers search for jobs through a network of firms: the labor flow network. The
lack of an edge between two companies indicates the impossibility of labor
flows between them due to high frictions. In equilibrium, firms' hiring
behavior correlates through the network, generating highly disaggregated local
unemployment. Hence, aggregation depends on the topology of the network in
non-trivial ways. This theory provides new micro-foundations for the Beveridge
curve, wage dispersion, and the employer-size premium. We apply our model to
employer-employee matched records and find that network topologies with
Pareto-distributed connections cause disproportionately large changes on
aggregate unemployment under high labor supply elasticity
Nonuniversal power law scaling in the probability distribution of scientific citations
We develop a model for the distribution of scientific citations. The model
involves a dual mechanism: in the direct mechanism, the author of a new paper
finds an old paper A and cites it. In the indirect mechanism, the author of a
new paper finds an old paper A only via the reference list of a newer
intermediary paper B, which has previously cited A. By comparison to citation
databases, we find that papers having few citations are cited mainly by the
direct mechanism. Papers already having many citations ('classics') are cited
mainly by the indirect mechanism. The indirect mechanism gives a power-law
tail. The 'tipping point' at which a paper becomes a classic is about 21
citations for papers published in the Institute for Scientific Information
(ISI) Web of Science database in 1981, 29 for Physical Review D papers
published from 1975-1994, and 39 for all publications from a list of high
h-index chemists assembled in 2007. The power-law exponent is not universal.
Individuals who are highly cited have a systematically smaller exponent than

Bankruptcy risk model and empirical tests
We analyze the size dependence and temporal stability of firm bankruptcy risk
in the US economy by applying Zipf scaling techniques. We focus on a single
risk factor-the debt-to-asset ratio R-in order to study the stability of the
Zipf distribution of R over time. We find that the Zipf exponent increases
during market crashes, implying that firms go bankrupt with larger values of R.
Based on the Zipf analysis, we employ Bayes's theorem and relate the
conditional probability that a bankrupt firm has a ratio R with the conditional
probability of bankruptcy for a firm with a given R value. For 2,737 bankrupt
firms, we demonstrate size dependence in assets change during the bankruptcy
proceedings. Prepetition firm assets and petition firm assets follow Zipf
distributions but with different exponents, meaning that firms with smaller
assets adjust their assets more than firms with larger assets during the
bankruptcy process. We compare bankrupt firms with nonbankrupt firms by
analyzing the assets and liabilities of two large subsets of the US economy:
2,545 Nasdaq members and 1,680 New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) members. We find
that both assets and liabilities follow a Pareto distribution. The finding is
not a trivial consequence of the Zipf scaling relationship of firm size
quantified by employees-although the market capitalization of Nasdaq stocks
follows a Pareto distribution, the same distribution does not describe NYSE
stocks. We propose a coupled Simon model that simultaneously evolves both
assets and debt with the possibility of bankruptcy, and we also consider the

Flight service evaluation of an advanced composite empennage component on commercial transport aircraft. Phase 1: Engineering development
The empennage component selected for this program is the vertical fin box of the L-1011 aircraft. The box structure extends from the fuselage production joint to the tip rib and includes the front and rear spars. Various design options were evaluated to arrive at a configuration which would offer the highest potential for satisfying program objectives. The preferred configuration selected consists of a hat-stiffened cover with molded integrally stiffened spars, aluminum trussed composite ribs, and composite miniwich web ribs with integrally molded caps. Material screening tests were performed to select an advanced composite material system for the Advanced Composite Vertical Fin (ACFV) that would meet the program requirements from the standpoint of quality, reproducibility, and cost. Preliminary weight and cost analysis were made, targets established, and tracking plans developed. These include FAA certification, ancillary test program, quality control, and structural integrity control plans

Stress and Sleep Quality: Mediating Effects of Social Support
Stress is defined as the “nonspecific response of the body to any demand made upon it” (Kohn & Frazer, 1986). Stress is among the top five threats to academic performance among college students (Pettit & DeBarr, 2011). The purpose of the study was to investigate whether stress affects perceived sleep quality, as mediated by social support, and to determine whether stress levels vary based on academic major. Using ANOVA in SPSS 24, we tested three hypotheses: stress and sleep quality are negatively correlated, social support mediates the relationship between stress and sleep quality, and stress levels will vary by academic major (specifically that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors will show greater perceived amounts of stress). Results of this study show that there is positive correlation between sleep and stress, a negative correlation between social support and sleep, and a negative correlation between stress and social support
Power Law of Customers' Expenditures in Convenience Stores
In a convenience store chain, a tail of the cumulative density function of
the expenditure of a person during a single shopping trip follows a power law
with an exponent of -2.5. The exponent is independent of the location of the

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta limits the expansion of pathogenic Th cells during central nervous system autoimmunity.
Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs; PPAR-alpha, PPAR-delta, and PPAR-gamma) comprise a family of nuclear receptors that sense fatty acid levels and translate this information into altered gene transcription. Previously, it was reported that treatment of mice with a synthetic ligand activator of PPAR-delta, GW0742, ameliorates experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), indicating a possible role for this nuclear receptor in the control of central nervous system (CNS) autoimmune inflammation. We show that mice deficient in PPAR-delta (PPAR-delta(-/-)) develop a severe inflammatory response during EAE characterized by a striking accumulation of IFN-gamma(+)IL-17A(-) and IFN-gamma(+)IL-17A(+) CD4(+) cells in the spinal cord. The preferential expansion of these T helper subsets in the CNS of PPAR-delta(-/-) mice occurred as a result of a constellation of immune system aberrations that included higher CD4(+) cell proliferation, cytokine production, and T-bet expression and enhanced expression of IL-12 family cytokines by myeloid cells. We also show that the effect of PPAR-delta in inhibiting the production of IFN-gamma and IL-12 family cytokines is ligand dependent and is observed in both mouse and human immune cells. Collectively, these findings suggest that PPAR-delta serves as an important molecular brake for the control of autoimmune inflammation
Nonequilibrium phase transition in a model for social influence
We present extensive numerical simulations of the Axelrod's model for social
influence, aimed at understanding the formation of cultural domains. This is a
nonequilibrium model with short range interactions and a remarkably rich
dynamical behavior. We study the phase diagram of the model and uncover a
nonequilibrium phase transition separating an ordered (culturally polarized)
phase from a disordered (culturally fragmented) one. The nature of the phase
transition can be continuous or discontinuous depending on the model
parameters. At the transition, the size of cultural regions is power-law
