Correlation between bulk and surface properties in Cd–X (X=Hg, Mg) liquid alloys

    Get PDF
A theoretical investigation of the energetics and its effect on the alloying behaviour of Cd–Hg and Cd–Mg liquid alloys have been carried out with the aim of correlating their bulk and surface phenomena. Using the Quasi-chemical approximation for regular solution model, our results indicate that Cd–Hg and Cd–Mg are weakly heterocoordinated both in the bulk and on the surface. We observed that the degree of chemical order in Cd–Mg liquid alloy is more than that of Cd–Hg liquid alloy

Cytological study of Allium cepa and Allium sativum

The large number of species in the Allium genus has necessitated comparative analysis of related species which has always been used in many cases to describe patterns and directions of chromosomal evolution within a group. This study was carried out to cytologically analyse two species of Allium- Allium cepa and Allium sativum. All the four stages of cell division were observed in both species, although well spread metaphase chromosomes could not be observed in A. sativum which limited the extent to which we could cytologically evaluate the species. Allium cepa in this study show cell with a complement of sixteen chromosomes. A total chromosome length of 577.5 µm was observed in the best c-metaphase spread with the longest chromosome being 43.4µm and the shortest 27.9 µm. Further studies are still required in the karyotype analysis of A. sativum from Nigeri

Aircrew coordination and decisionmaking: Peer ratings of video tapes made during a full mission simulation

Six professionally active, retired captains rated the coordination and decisionmaking performances of sixteen aircrews while viewing videotapes of a simulated commercial air transport operation. The scenario featured a required diversion and a probable minimum fuel situation. Seven point Likert-type scales were used in rating variables on the basis of a model of crew coordination and decisionmaking. The variables were based on concepts of, for example, decision difficulty, efficiency, and outcome quality; and leader-subordin ate concepts such as person and task-oriented leader behavior, and competency motivation of subordinate crewmembers. Five-front-end variables of the model were in turn dependent variables for a hierarchical regression procedure. The variance in safety performance was explained 46%, by decision efficiency, command reversal, and decision quality. The variance of decision quality, an alternative substantive dependent variable to safety performance, was explained 60% by decision efficiency and the captain's quality of within-crew communications. The variance of decision efficiency, crew coordination, and command reversal were in turn explained 78%, 80%, and 60% by small numbers of preceding independent variables. A principle component, varimax factor analysis supported the model structure suggested by regression analyses

IMPACT OF ACCESS TO CREDIT ON FARM OUTPUT AMONG AGROFORESTRY FARMERS IN OYO STATE, NIGERIA

    Get PDF
Agroforestry contributes to food and income security, and improvement of crop productivity. Access toagricultural credit is crucial to the enhancement of agricultural growth and development. The study examinedthe impact of access to credit on the output of agroforestry farmers in Oyo State, Nigeria. A multi-stage samplingtechnique was used to select the respondents from the study area. Descriptive (frequencies and percentages) andinferential statistics (Propensity Score Matching-PSM) were used in the study. The results show propensity scoredistribution and common support for propensity score estimation from the covariate balancing tests both beforeand after matching in which the treatment (credit access) and comparison (non-access to credit) groups are said tobe balanced. Meanwhile, the result of the impact of access to credit facilities on farmers' output in the study fromthe PSM analysis shows that access to credit had a positive and significant impact on the farmers output. Therefore, the study concludes that improving access to agricultural credit facilities could be a potential source ofpoverty reduction among farmers in the study area through the enhancement of farmers' output and by extensionimproving their income. In view of this, farmers' access to credit facilities needs to be enhanced through thedevelopment and encouragement of farm-level policies that ensure easy access to financial credit among ruralfarmers

Age as a Correlate of Quality of Academic Programmes: the Case of Public Universities in South West Nigeria

    Get PDF
This study examined the influence of age on quality of academicprogrammes in South West Nigerian universities. A descriptive survey design was used in the study. Data were collected from 600 academic staff using stratified, purposive and simple random techniques. The data were analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, standard deviation and t-test statistic. The study revealed that there was significant difference between first generation and third generation universities in their extent of compliance with quality assurance measures on academic programmes. Also, a significant difference was found between first generation and third generation universities on constraints to quality assurance measures with third generation universities facing greater constraints. It was recommended that both categories of universities be given adequate  attention in the provision of quality-enhancing inputs. However, third generation universities should be accorded greater priority in allocation of resources. In addition, greater collaboration is recommended between first and third generation universities while newly established universities must be affiliated with older universities for mentoring. Keywords: Age of University; Quality assurance; Programme accreditatio

One of the obvious gains of the economic reform programs in Nigeria has been the vast improvement in telecom infrastructure over the past few years. However real development goes beyond infrastructure; people come first. How well is Nigeria developing the manpower and human resources required to apply information and communications technology for development

The Impact of Foreign Direct Investment On Economic Growth In Nigeria

    Get PDF
This study examines the impact of foreign direct investment on economic growth in Nigeria during the period 1976 – 2006, using the two-stage least squares (2SLS) method of simultaneous equation model.  The findings of the study revealed a negative relationship between economic growth proxied by Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as a result of insufficient FDI flow into the Nigerian economy.  It is therefore, recommended that Nigeria should encourage domestic investment to accelerate growth rather than relying on FDI as a primer mover of the economy and develop a code of conduct on FDI to curb the restrictive business practice of multinationals and limit their repatriation of profits from Nigeria.
