Observability of characteristic binary-induced structures in circumbinary disks

Context: A substantial fraction of protoplanetary disks forms around stellar binaries. The binary system generates a time-dependent non-axisymmetric gravitational potential, inducing strong tidal forces on the circumbinary disk. This leads to a change in basic physical properties of the circumbinary disk, which should in turn result in unique structures that are potentially observable with the current generation of instruments. Aims: The goal of this study is to identify these characteristic structures, to constrain the physical conditions that cause them, and to evaluate the feasibility to observe them in circumbinary disks. Methods: To achieve this, at first two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations are performed. The resulting density distributions are post-processed with a 3D radiative transfer code to generate re-emission and scattered light maps. Based on these, we study the influence of various parameters, such as the mass of the stellar components, the mass of the disk and the binary separation on observable features in circumbinary disks. Results: We find that the Atacama Large (sub-)Millimetre Array (ALMA) as well as the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) are capable of tracing asymmetries in the inner region of circumbinary disks which are affected most by the binary-disk interaction. Observations at submillimetre/millimetre wavelengths will allow the detection of the density waves at the inner rim of the disk and the inner cavity. With the E-ELT one can partially resolve the innermost parts of the disk in the infrared wavelength range, including the disk's rim, accretion arms and potentially the expected circumstellar disks around each of the binary components

The article describes a method for detection of the reference signal, with presence of the periodic additive noise. The characteristics of noise are unknown. The problem is reduced to finding the occurrence of a proportional relationship between some intermediate signals after a time interval equal to the period of the noise. The appearance of proportional relationship detected with using the function of disproportionality by the first order derivative

The frequency of detection and the degree of dissemination of the gastric mucosa by the active form of Helicobacter pylori in 70 patients with chronic non-atrophic gastritis with biliary tract dyskinesia (BTD) by hypotonic hypokinetic type and in 70 patients with chronic non-atrophic gastritis with preserved function of the bladder were analyzed. In the group of patients with BTD according to the hypotonic hypokinetic type, the frequency of occurrence of the active form of Helicobacter pylori infection in different topographic zones of the stomach ranged from 24.3% to 35.7% with a moderate degree of mucous contamination - (+), while in the group of patients with preserved the function of the gallbladder, the frequency of occurrence of the active form of Helicobacter pylori infection in different topographic zones of the stomach ranged from 61.4% to 71.1% with a moderate degree of dissemination of the mucous membrane (++)

Elastic constants of borocarbides. New approach to acoustic Measurement technique

A new version of the phase method of determining the sound velocity is proposed and implemented. It utilizes the ``Nonius'' measurement technique and can give acceptable accuracy (~1%) in samples of submillimeter size. Measurements of the sound velocity are made in single-crystal samples of the borocarbides RNi2B2C (R = Y,Lu,Ho). The elastic constants and the Debye temperature are calculated.Comment: 5 figures, 2 table

© Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd. We show that Van Hove singularities in the behavior of the photon density of states in a photonic crystal results in a singular behavior of the self-energy functions of atomic states that describe the interaction of the atom with vacuum. This is shown to have a significant effect on processes of quantum interference from atoms in the PC medium

Influence of antibiotic treatment duration on the development of antibiotic resistance

Avoidance of unnecessary antimicrobial administration is a key point of antimicrobial stewardship; knowing the optimal duration of therapy obviates over-treatment. In this article we have highlighted the results of modern research on the influence of the duration of antibiotic use on the success of treatment and the development of resistance of microorganisms. Foreign literary sources and the results of scientific research by experts in this field are analyzed. Based on the research results, the following conclusions were made. The results of modern studies on the duration of antibiotic use show that short-course antibiotic therapy is superior to usual long-course antimicrobial treatment. A short course of antibiotic therapy usually leads to the same positive clinical outcomes, a lower rate of antibiotic resistance and the number of clinical relapses. The two most important potential complications associated with the duration of antibiotic therapy are incomplete treatment and the emergence of antibiotic resistance. The time points used for antibiotic treatment (clinical or bacteriological cure, relapses, etc.) are subjective, complex and unreliable. The effectiveness of procalcitonin or other blood parameters for use in monitoring antibiotic treatment requires more focused studies. Despite the high relevance and publicity of various aspects of antibiotic therapy in the practice of human and animal healthcare, research on the efficacy and consequences of short-term antibiotic therapy in veterinary medicine is limited. More attention should be paid to this issue, especially in the field of animal husbandry

Study of collective radial breathing-like modes in double-walled carbon nanotubes: Combination of continuous two-dimensional membrane theory and Raman spectroscopy

    Get PDF
Radial breathing modes (RBMs) are widely used for the atomic structure characterization and index assignment of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) from resonant Raman spectroscopy. However, for double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs), the use of conventional ¿RBM(d) formulas is complicated due to the van der Waals interaction between the layers, which strongly affects the frequencies of radial modes and leads to new collective vibrations. This paper presents an alternative way to theoretically study the collective radial breathing-like modes (RBLMs) of DWNTs and to account for interlayer interaction, namely the continuous two-dimensional membrane theory. We obtain an analytical ¿RBLM(do, di) relation, being the equivalent of the conventional ¿RBM(d) expressions, established for SWNTs. We compare our theoretical predictions with Raman data, measured on individual index-identified suspended DWNTs, and find a good agreement between experiment and theory. Moreover, we show that the interlayer coupling in individual DWNTs strongly depends on the interlayer distance, which is manifested in the frequency shifts of the RBLMs with respect to the RBMs of the individual inner and outer tubes. In terms of characterization, this means that the combination of Raman spectroscopy data and predictions of continuous membrane theory may give additional criteria for the index identification of DWNTs, namely the interlayer distance

The dynamics of ovine gastrointestinal nematode infections within ewe and lamb cohorts on three Scottish sheep farms

    Get PDF
Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are a serious concern for sheep producers worldwide. However, there is a paucity of evidence describing the epidemiology of GIN on modern UK sheep farms. The aim of this paper was to understand whether expected seasonal variations of infection are still found in ewes and lambs under varying management strategies in temperate climates. Faecal egg counts (FEC) were conducted on freshly voided samples collected from groups of ewes and lambs every third week for twelve months on three farms in southeast Scotland. The patterns of egg output have been described here in relation to management practices undertaken on the farms. Despite changes in farming practice and climatic conditions, the findings complement historical studies detailing the epidemiology of GIN. Findings include a periparturient rise in ewe FEC on two of the farms, while lambing time treatment appeared to suppress this on the third farm. On the same two farms lamb FEC increased during the summer, reaching a peak in the autumn. The work also highlights how the ad hoc use of anthelmintics does little to impact these patterns
