The Early Bird Catches The Term: Combining Twitter and News Data For Event Detection and Situational Awareness
Twitter updates now represent an enormous stream of information originating
from a wide variety of formal and informal sources, much of which is relevant
to real-world events. In this paper we adapt existing bio-surveillance
algorithms to detect localised spikes in Twitter activity corresponding to real
events with a high level of confidence. We then develop a methodology to
automatically summarise these events, both by providing the tweets which fully
describe the event and by linking to highly relevant news articles. We apply
our methods to outbreaks of illness and events strongly affecting sentiment. In
both case studies we are able to detect events verifiable by third party
sources and produce high quality summaries
3D printing part orientation optimization: discrete approximation of support volume
In three-dimensional (3D) printing, due to the geometry of most parts, it is necessary to use extra material to support the manufacturing process. This material must be discarded after printing, so its reduction is essential to minimize manufacturing time and cost. An important parameter that must be defined before starting the printing process is the part orientation, which has repercussions on the quality, deposition path, and post-processing among others. Usually, the user sets up this parameter arbitrarily, so this paper takes advantage of it on optimization techniques and proposes an approximation of the volume be covered by the support material, which depends directly on the angle of the part to be printed and its geometry. Among mono-objectives optimization strategies, this work focuses on five of them. Their performance is compared by two metrics: support volume and execution time. Then, the best result is compared with commercial software
Modeling the video distribution link in the Next Generation Optical Access Networks
In this work we present a model for the design and optimization of the video distribution link in the next generation optical access network. We analyze the video distribution performance in a SCM-WDM link, including the noise, the distortion and the fiber optic nonlinearities. Additionally, we consider in the model the effect of distributed Raman amplification, used to extent the capacity and the reach of the optical link. In the model, we use the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the purpose to obtain capacity limitations and design constrains of the next generation optical access networks. Cyclic brightening in the short-period WZ Sge-type cataclysmic variable SDSS J080434.20+510349.2
We have observed a new cataclysmic variable (CV) SDSS J080434.20+510349.2 and
study the origin of a long-term variability found in its light curve.
Multi-longitude time-resolved photometric observations were carried out to
analyze the uncommon behavior also found recently in two newly discovered CVs.
This study of SDSS J080434.20+510349.2 mainly concerns the understanding of the
nature of the observed double-humped light curve and its relation to a cyclic
brightening occurring during quiescence. The observations were obtained early
in 2007, when the object was at about V~17.1, 0.4 mag brighter than the
pre-outburst magnitude. The light curve shows a sinusoidal variability with an
amplitude of about 0.07 mag and a periodicity of 42.48 min, which is half of
the orbital period of the system. In addition, we have observed two
"mini-outbursts" of the system up to 0.6 mag, with a duration of about 4 days
each. The "mini-outburst" had a symmetric profile and repeated in about 32
days. Subsequent monitoring of the system shows a cyclical behaviour of such
"mini-outbursts" with a similar recurrence period. The origin of the
double-humped light curve and the periodic brightening is discussed in the
light of the evolutionary state of SDSS J080434.20+510349.2.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, Accepted by A&A, typos added, figure correcte
Electric-field-induced alignment of electrically neutral disk-like particles: modelling and calculation
This work reveals a torque from electric field to electrically neutral flakes that are suspended in a higher electrical conductive matrix. The torque tends to rotate the particles toward an orientation with its long axis parallel to the electric current flow. The alignment enables the anisotropic properties of tiny particles to integrate together and generate desirable macroscale anisotropic properties. The torque was obtained from thermodynamic calculation of electric current free energy at various microstructure configurations. It is significant even when the electrical potential gradient becomes as low as 100 v/m. The changes of electrical, electroplastic and thermal properties during particles alignment were discussed
Review: Placental adaptations to the presence of maternal asthma during pregnancy
Asthma is a highly prevalent chronic medical condition affecting an estimated 12% of pregnant, women each year, with prevalence of asthma greatest (up to 16%) among the socially disadvantaged. Maternal asthma is associated with significant perinatal morbidity and mortality including preterm births, neonatal hospitalisations and low birthweight outcomes each year. We have identified that the placenta adapts to the presence of chronic, maternal asthma during pregnancy in a sex specific manner that may confer sex differences in fetal outcome. The male fetus was at greater risk of a poor outcome than a female fetus in the presence of maternal asthma and an acute inflammatory event such as an asthma exacerbation. This review will examine the role of sex specific differences in placental function on fetal growth and survival
Educational Strategies to Promote Adherence to Treatment in Patients with Cardiovascular Disease
Introduction: Educational material is a key strategy for primary health care promotion. Purpose: To design and validate educational material adapted to the population and aimed to increase knowledge about adherence to the treatment of arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Methodology: Methodological study for the design of educational material for people with diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure. For the design, content validity tests were carried out, with the participation of six experts in health education and six patients with chronic diseases. Validation was performed pursuant to the attraction, understanding, engagement, and acceptance criteria. Results: The validation confirmed that all items and criteria were above the minimal expected range. Conclusion: The design and validation of educational material provide elements that improve the education of patients about their pathologies and their adherence to treatment
