    “I want my PRC”: engagement of undergraduates with and assessment of the peer research consultant program

    Purpose This paper describes the benefits found in undergraduate students working to provide research assistance to their peers. The discussion includes how soft skills are built, along with how the position has aided in both educational and building towards their future careers. The paper is submitted for the special issue on “The future of peer-led research services.” Design/methodology/approach The authors provide a viewpoint from both a peer research supervisor and a student currently working as a PRC. The paper covers the requirements and implementations at the beginning of the program along with the changes that have occurred to better streamline the process of hiring and training. The viewpoint of the PRC was a key factor in the process. Findings Soft skills are a key component of the program. The undergraduate PRCs develop confidence, leadership and communication skills through interactions with their peers. The campus community is responding to the peer model because the PRCs are currently taking the same classes or have recently taken them, and the campus is now asking for the peer mentors that assist librarians in teaching introductory classes. Practical implications For libraries considering the development of their own programs, the benefits presented can lend to their proposals on real-world application beyond the college experience, as well as how it benefits the busy schedules of librarians. Social implications The training the PRCs are provided by librarians provides credibility and trust, which encourages their peers to utilize the services. Soft skills are also one of the most requested needs for businesses beyond college. The PRC program is providing these skills, which the peer mentors use both in career readiness and their daily interactions. Originality/value This paper views a program only a few years old on how it managed through a pandemic, as well as how the supervisor adjusted training to reflect a renovation that brought about a changing desk model. With a current undergraduate PRC as the co-author, a unique perspective is brought to the writing by showing what they personally are taking away from working in the program

    Real-time national GPS networks: Opportunities for atmospheric sensing

    Real-time national Global Positioning System (GPS) networks are being established in a number of countries for atmospheric sensing. UCAR, in collaboration with participating universities, is developing one of these networks in the United States. The network, named "SuomiNet" to honor meteorological satellite pioneer Verner Suomi, is funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation. SuomiNet will exploit the recently-shown ability of ground-based GPS receivers to make thousands of accurate upper and lower atmospheric measurements per day. Phase delays induced in GPS signals by the ionosphere and neutral atmosphere can be measured with high precision simultaneously along up to a dozen GPS ray paths in the field of view. These delays can be converted into total electron content (TEC), and integrated water vapor (if surface pressure data or estimates are available), along each GPS ray path. The resulting continuous, accurate, all-weather, real-time upper and lower atmospheric data create a variety of opportunities for atmospheric research. In this letter we describe SuomiNet, its applications, and the opportunity to coordinate national real-time GPS networks to create, a global network with larger scientific and operational potential.     The Kinematic Structure of Magnetically Aligned HI Filaments

    We characterize the kinematic and magnetic properties of HI filaments located in a high Galactic latitude region (165∘<α<195∘165^\circ < \alpha < 195^\circ and 12∘<ÎŽ<24∘12^\circ < \delta < 24^\circ). We extract three-dimensional filamentary structures using \texttt{fil3d} from the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array HI (GALFA-HI) survey 21-cm emission data. Our algorithm identifies coherent emission structures in neighboring velocity channels. Based on the mean velocity, we identify a population of local and intermediate velocity cloud (IVC) filaments. We find the orientations of the local (but not the IVC) HI filaments are aligned with the magnetic field orientations inferred from Planck 353 GHz polarized dust emission. We analyze position-velocity diagrams of the velocity-coherent filaments, and find that only 15 percent of filaments demonstrate significant major-axis velocity gradients with a median magnitude of 0.5 km s−1^{-1} pc−1^{-1}, assuming a fiducial filament distance of 100 pc. We conclude that the typical diffuse HI filament does not exhibit a simple velocity gradient.     Dust emission from young outflows: the case of L1157

    We present new high-sensitivity 1.3 mm bolometer observations of the young outflow L1157. These data show that the continuum emission arises from four distinct components: a circumstellar disk, a protostellar envelope, an extended flattened envelope --the dense remnant of the molecular cloud in which the protostar was formed--, and the outflow itself, which represents ~20% of the total flux. The outflow emission exhibits two peaks that are coincident with the two strong shocks in the southern lobe of L1157. We show that the mm continuum is dominated by thermal dust emission arising in the high velocity material. The spectral index derived from the new 1.3 mm data and 850 mu observations from Shirley et al. (2000), is ~5 in the outflow, significantly higher than in the protostellar envelope (~3.5). This can be explained by an important line contamination of the 850 mu map, and/or by different dust characteristics in the two regions, possibly smaller grains in the post-shocks regions of the outflow. Our observations show that bipolar outflows can present compact emission peaks which must not be misinterpreted as protostellar condensations when mapping star forming regions

    Gender and Public Issues Deliberations in Named and Anonymous Online Environments

    Online deliberations in social studies classrooms are increasingly feasible as more schools incorporate online learning environments into their programs. The present study investigates student participation in online deliberations with particular attention to (1) the differences between opinion expression and participation in anonymous versus named conditions, (2) whether the magnitude of any such differences varies by gender, (3) whether males and females express a preference for deliberation in named or anonymous online environments, and (4) the impact of named and anonymous environments on developing students’ deliberative skills. When opinion expression and participation results are analyzed by gender, we find that differences between females and males that manifest in named conditions disappear when discussing anonymously. We find that female students are significantly more likely to prefer discussing in anonymous environments. Finally, we find that students deliberating anonymously express more opinions in a subsequent deliberation than those in the named condition
