Flow cytometric characterization and clinical outcome of CD4+ T-cell lymphoma in dogs: 67 cases.
BackgroundCanine T-cell lymphoma (TCL) is conventionally considered an aggressive disease, but some forms are histologically and clinically indolent. CD4 TCL is reported to be the most common subtype of TCL. We assessed flow cytometric characteristics, histologic features when available, and clinical outcomes of CD4+ TCL to determine if flow cytometry can be used to subclassify this group of lymphomas.ObjectiveTo test the hypothesis that canine CD4+ T-cell lymphoma (TCL) is a homogeneous group of lymphomas with an aggressive clinical course.AnimalsSixty-seven dogs diagnosed with CD4+ TCL by flow cytometry and treated at 1 of 3 oncology referral clinics.MethodsRetrospective multivariable analysis of outcome in canine CD4+ TCL including patient characteristics, treatment, and flow cytometric features.ResultsThe majority of CD4+ TCL were CD45+, expressed low class II MHC, and exhibited an aggressive clinical course independent of treatment regimen (median survival, 159 days). Histologically, CD4+ TCL were classified as lymphoblastic or peripheral T cell. Size of the neoplastic lymphocytes had a modest effect on both PFI and survival in this group. A small number of CD4+ TCL were CD45- and class II MHC high, and exhibited an apparently more indolent clinical course (median survival not yet reached).Conclusions and clinical importanceAlthough the majority of CD4+ TCL in dogs had uniform clinical and flow cytometric features and an aggressive clinical course, a subset had a unique immunophenotype that predicts significantly longer survival. This finding strengthens the utility of flow cytometry to aid in the stratification of canine lymphoma

A nickel cadmium battery design which can offer better thermal management, higher energy density and much lower cost than the state-of-the-art is emphasized. A toroidal Ni/Cd cell concept is described. It was critically reviewed and used to develop two cell designs for practical implementation. One is a double swaged and the other a swaged welded configuration
The Event Horizon of M87
The 6 billion solar mass supermassive black hole at the center of the giant
elliptical galaxy M87 powers a relativistic jet. Observations at millimeter
wavelengths with the Event Horizon Telescope have localized the emission from
the base of this jet to angular scales comparable to the putative black hole
horizon. The jet might be powered directly by an accretion disk or by
electromagnetic extraction of the rotational energy of the black hole. However,
even the latter mechanism requires a confining thick accretion disk to maintain
the required magnetic flux near the black hole. Therefore, regardless of the
jet mechanism, the observed jet power in M87 implies a certain minimum mass
accretion rate. If the central compact object in M87 were not a black hole but
had a surface, this accretion would result in considerable thermal
near-infrared and optical emission from the surface. Current flux limits on the
nucleus of M87 strongly constrain any such surface emission. This rules out the
presence of a surface and thereby provides indirect evidence for an event

Regulating Advertisements: The Case of Smoking Cessation Products
In this paper we investigate how direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising of pharmaceutical products in affected by regulations of the Food and Drug Administration and by market conditions. We focus on a relatively under-studied segment of the pharmaceutical market -- the market for smoking cessation products. Because of their proven effectiveness, these products could be the key to meeting public health goals to reduce smoking. However, in many ways, smoking cessation products have been more heavily regulated than cigarettes. Our empirical analysis uses data on advertising expenditures and data from an archive of print advertisements. The archive includes all smoking cessation product advertisements that appeared in over 13,000 issues of 28 magazines between January 1985 and May 2002. Our study period begins shortly atfer the first nicotine replacement product was introduced, and covers the evolution of the market as new products are introduced while some of the older products move from prescription to over-the-counter (OTC) status. OTC status eases the disclosure requirements imposed on advertisements of prescription pharmaceuticals, substantially reducing the costs of a print advertisement. Our results suggest that OTC status is associated with an increase in advertising expenditures and the number and pages of magazine advertisements. A current proposal to reduce disclosure requirements on all DTC advertisements of prescription drugs could have similar effects. Our results also suggest that advertising increase with the introduction of new products and with market competition.
Modeling the ballistic-to-diffusive transition in nematode motility reveals variation in exploratory behavior across species
A quantitative understanding of organism-level behavior requires predictive
models that can capture the richness of behavioral phenotypes, yet are simple
enough to connect with underlying mechanistic processes. Here we investigate
the motile behavior of nematodes at the level of their translational motion on
surfaces driven by undulatory propulsion. We broadly sample the nematode
behavioral repertoire by measuring motile trajectories of the canonical lab
strain N2 as well as wild strains and distant species. We focus on
trajectory dynamics over timescales spanning the transition from ballistic
(straight) to diffusive (random) movement and find that salient features of the
motility statistics are captured by a random walk model with independent
dynamics in the speed, bearing and reversal events. We show that the model
parameters vary among species in a correlated, low-dimensional manner
suggestive of a common mode of behavioral control and a trade-off between
exploration and exploitation. The distribution of phenotypes along this primary
mode of variation reveals that not only the mean but also the variance varies
considerably across strains, suggesting that these nematode lineages employ
contrasting ``bet-hedging'' strategies for foraging.Comment: 46 pages, 18 figures, 6 table
A review of human factors principles for the design and implementation of medication safety alerts in clinical information systems.
The objective of this review is to describe the implementation of human factors principles for the design of alerts in clinical information systems. First, we conduct a review of alarm systems to identify human factors principles that are employed in the design and implementation of alerts. Second, we review the medical informatics literature to provide examples of the implementation of human factors principles in current clinical information systems using alerts to provide medication decision support. Last, we suggest actionable recommendations for delivering effective clinical decision support using alerts. A review of studies from the medical informatics literature suggests that many basic human factors principles are not followed, possibly contributing to the lack of acceptance of alerts in clinical information systems. We evaluate the limitations of current alerting philosophies and provide recommendations for improving acceptance of alerts by incorporating human factors principles in their design
Quantum Fluctuations and Excitations in Antiferromagnetic Quasicrystals
We study the effects of quantum fluctuations and the excitation spectrum for
the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a two-dimensional quasicrystal, by
numerically solving linear spin-wave theory on finite approximants of the
octagonal tiling. Previous quantum Monte Carlo results for the distribution of
local staggered magnetic moments and the static spin structure factor are
reproduced well within this approximate scheme. Furthermore, the magnetic
excitation spectrum consists of magnon-like low-energy modes, as well as
dispersionless high-energy states of multifractal nature. The dynamical spin
structure factor, accessible to inelastic neutron scattering, exhibits
linear-soft modes at low energies, self-similar structures with bifurcations
emerging at intermediate energies, and flat bands in high-energy regions. We
find that the distribution of local staggered moments stemming from the
inhomogeneity of the quasiperiodic structure leads to a characteristic energy
spread in the local dynamical spin susceptibility, implying distinct nuclear
magnetic resonance spectra, specific for different local environments.Comment: RevTex, 12 pages with 15 figure
Empirical wind model for the middle and lower atmosphere. Part 1: Local time average
The HWM90 thermospheric wind model was revised in the lower thermosphere and extended into the mesosphere and lower atmosphere to provide a single analytic model for calculating zonal and meridional wind profiles representative of the climatological average for various geophysical conditions. Gradient winds from CIRA-86 plus rocket soundings, incoherent scatter radar, MF radar, and meteor radar provide the data base and are supplemented by previous data driven model summaries. Low-order spherical harmonics and Fourier series are used to describe the major variations throughout the atmosphere including latitude, annual, semiannual, and longitude (stationary wave 1). The model represents a smoothed compromise between the data sources. Although agreement between various data sources is generally good, some systematic differences are noted, particularly near the mesopause. Root mean square differences between data and model are on the order of 15 m/s in the mesosphere and 10 m/s in the stratosphere for zonal wind, and 10 m/s and 4 m/s, respectively, for meridional wind
Tandem concentrator solar cells with 30 percent (AMO) power conversion efficiency
Very high efficiency concentrator solar panels are envisioned as economical and reliable electrical power subsystems for space based platforms of the future. GaAs concentrator cells with very high efficiencies and good sub-bandgap transmissions can be fabricated on standard wafers. GaSb booster cell development is progressing very well; performance characteristics are still improving dramatically. Consistent GaAs/GaSb stacked cell AMO efficiencies greater than 30 percent are expected
