    Get PDF

Zografos, L. info:eu-repo/semantics/conferenceObject inproceedings 2010 Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, vol. 51 <![CDATA[Purpose: to describe a case of probable bilateral diffuse uveal melanocytic proliferation (BDUMP) with scleral involvement, free from systemic malignancies and cataract. Methods: fifty months of follow up with recurrent complete ophthalmological examinations, including fundus photography, fluorescein/indocyanine green angiography (FA) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Investigations also included an electroretinography (ERG) and histological examination of scleral biopsy. Extraocular malignancies were repeatedly searched. Results: the patient was a 61 year-old Italian man with chronic hepatitis type C. At first visit his best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/32 in OS and 20/25 in OD. Funduscopy showed multiple patch-shaped pigmented alterations involving macular region and mid retinal periphery. FA showed corresponding areas of late-phase hyperfluorescent pinpoints (figure 1a, OS) and intemediate-phase hypocyanescence (figure 1b, OS), with subtle serous neurosensory retinal detachment confirmed by OCT. Photopic and scotopic ERG tested normal. Systemic prednisone was administered for one month without any improvement. After ten months round pigmentary lesions appeared also in superior scleral surface of both eyes. Biopsy allowed to disclose slightly pigmented spindle cells. BCVA worsened for further 10 months, with enlargement of FA alteration areas but lenses still clear. After 30 months spontaneous coalescence and atrophy of retinal lesions started, paralleled by progressive visual recovery. At the end of our follow up BCVA was 20/25 in OU while scleral pigmentary lesions remained unchanged. Conclusions: we report the case of a patient with main features of BDUMP and some unusual findings. Although not all classical diagnostic criteria were fulfilled, the presence of scleral pigmented lesions and spontaneous visual recovery may enlarge clinical spectrum of the disease

Music and humor in the urban space - The street blocks in Rio de Janeiro carnival

    Get PDF
International audienceThe use of the urban space as a scenery for popular manifestations reaches back to the origins of Rio de Janeiro's Carnival. The so-called "blocks" are groups of people who go out in greeting, to the sound of amplified music and percussion instruments. In the past decades, this type of expression multiplied exponentially, and, nowadays, hundreds of blocks occupy the city streets in the carnival period. The aim of this paper is to investigate the way the "street blocks" act on the urban ambiance and as modifiers of the perception for its inhabitants

As an architect, the author uses a pluridisciplinary approach to study the street arts from a spatial viewpoint sensitive to architectural and urban ambiances. She works, among other things, on the reception of this type of artistic action, where the stage can be a street, a place, even an entire city. Her article focuses on the reception of the different components of the public space at work (physical, social and sensory) and demonstrates the links that can be created between the place of representation, the artistic event, and social practices and representations. The author also presents strategies developed by the spectators during representations, as well as changes in the perception and representation of the spaces following these performances. To this end, she relies on surveys and analyses she conducted in France (particularly in Grenoble and Calais), which are largely based on participating observations and performances of varying sizes (from small-scale to city-wide) and types (fixed, moving, brief or of several days’ duration)

A variant acute promyelocytic leukemia with t(11;17) (q23;q12); ZBTB16-RARA showing typical morphology of classical acute promyelocytic leukemia

A subgroup of acute leukemia with morphology resembling acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) shows variant translocations involving RARA and has a different morphology from that of classical APL. The variant APL with t(11;17)(q23;q12); ZBTB16-RARA subgroup has been reported to have leukemic cells with regular nuclei, many granules, absence of Auer rods, an increased number of Pelgeroid neutrophils, strong myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, and all-trans-retinoic-acid (ATRA) resistance. Here, we report a case of variant APL with t(11;17)(q23;q12); ZBTB16-RARA showing typical morphological features of classical APL, including numerous Auer rods and faggot cells. The leukemic cells expressed CD13, CD33, CD117, human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DR, and cytoplasmic-MPO on the immunophenotyping study. The diagnosis was confirmed by cytogenetic and molecular studies. To distinguish variant APL cases from classical APL cases, regardless of whether morphologically the findings are consistent with those of classical APL, combining morphologic, immunophenotypic, cytogenetic, and molecular studies before chemotherapy is very important

By the late XIX century, the Hualfin Valley (Catamarca) awoke the interest of travellers, naturalists and scientists alike. They wrote the first descriptions, which currently form a document collection that gathers valuable information on the first archaeological discoveries of the valley. In 1919, Benjamín Muniz Barreto sponsored an archaeological expedition to the provinces of Northern Argentina, hiring Wladimir Weiser to lead. It gathered more than 12.000 archaeological pieces, which are held in the Archaeology Division of the Museum of La Plata since 1931. The importance of this collection lies on the documents it contains, such as travel diaries, notebooks, letters, photographs, charts and maps that were made during those days. In El Shincal de Quimivil, Weiser describes diverse structures in detail and, fundamentally, describes the natural and archaeological landscapes that allowed us to analyze the spatial occupation and identify the structures built. This process of constructing the archaeological evidence makes possible for us to identify and interpret in the present the context described in the past, taking it as a parallel line of evidence to generate hypotheses on the regional landscape, linking the story that documents tell with the results of three decades of research.Fil: Moralejo, Reinaldo Andres. INTRODUCTION: Teenage pregnancy remains a worldwide health concern which is an outcome of, and contributor to, health inequalities. The need for gender-aware interventions with a focus on males in addressing teenage pregnancy has been highlighted as a global health need by WHO and identified in systematic reviews of (relationship and sexuality education (RSE)). This study aims to test the effectiveness of an interactive film-based RSE intervention, which draws explicit attention to the role of males in preventing an unintended pregnancy by reducing unprotected heterosexual teenage sex among males and females under age 16 years. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A phase III cluster randomised trial with embedded process and economic evaluations. If I Were Jack encompasses a culturally sensitive interactive film, classroom materials, a teacher-trainer session and parent animations and will be delivered to replace some of the usual RSE for the target age group in schools in the intervention group. Schools in the control group will not receive the intervention and will continue with usual RSE. Participants will not be blinded to allocation. Schools are the unit of randomisation stratified per country and socioeconomic status. We aim to recruit 66 UK schools (24 in Northern Ireland; 14 in each of England, Scotland and Wales), including approximately 7900 pupils. A questionnaire will be administered at baseline and at 12-14 months postintervention. The primary outcome is reported unprotected sex, a surrogate measure associated with unintended teenage pregnancy. Secondary outcomes include knowledge, attitudes, skills and intentions relating to avoiding teenage pregnancy in addition to frequency of engagement in sexual intercourse, contraception use and diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval was obtained from Queen's University Belfast. Results will be published in peer-reviewed journals and disseminated to stakeholders. Funding is from the National Institute for Health Research. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ISRCTN99459996
