Socio-economic indexes for electoral divisions: 2006 Census
The Census collects data on a broad range of social and economic measures of the Australian population. While it is possible to compare electoral divisions on individual census data items, it is often more useful to compare divisions on the basis of a summary of related social and economic data items. This paper provides data on the four separate summary indexes derived from the 2006 Census of Population and Housing.

Are non-slip socks really 'non-slip'? An analysis of slip resistance
Background. Non-slip socks have been suggested as a means of preventing accidental falls due to slips. This study compared the relative slip resistance of commercially available non-slip socks with other foot conditions, namely bare feet, compression stockings and conventional socks, in order to determine any traction benefit. Methods. Phase one involved slip resistance testing of two commercially available non-slip socks and one compression-stocking sample through an independent blinded materials testing laboratory using a Wet Pendulum Test. Phase two of the study involved in-situ testing among healthy adult subjects (n = 3). Subjects stood unsupported on a variable angle, inclined platform topped with hospital grade vinyl, in a range of foot conditions (bare feet, non-slip socks, conventional socks and compression stockings). Inclination was increased incrementally for each condition until slippage of any magnitude was detected. The platform angle was monitored using a spatial orientation tracking sensor and slippage point was recorded on video. Results. Phase one results generated through Wet Pendulum Test suggested that non-slip socks did not offer better traction than compression stockings. However, in phase two, slippage in compression stockings was detected at the lowest angles across all participants. Amongst the foot conditions tested, barefoot conditions produced the highest slip angles for all participants indicating that this foot condition provided the highest slip resistance. Conclusion. It is evident that bare feet provide better slip resistance than non-slip socks and therefore might represent a safer foot condition. This study did not explore whether traction provided by bare feet was comparable to 'optimal' footwear such as shoes. However, previous studies have associated barefoot mobilisation with increased falls. Therefore, it is suggested that all patients continue to be encouraged to mobilise in appropriate, well-fitting shoes whilst in hospital. Limitations of this study in relation to the testing method, participant group and sample size are discussed
Low dose effects of ethanol on suckling rats: Enzymes activity, histological alterations and growth parameters.
زمینه و هدف: غلظت های پایین اتانول می توانند از طریق جفت به جنین و از طریق شیر مادر به نوزاد تازه متولد شده منتقل شوند. این مطالعه با هدف بررسی اثرات دوزهای مختلف اتانول در طول دوره شیردهی بر تغییرات آنزیمی، بافتی و شاخص های رشد نوزادان شیرخوار در موش صحرایی انجام شد. روش بررسی: در این مطالعه تجربی، 21 سر موش صحرایی ماده بالغ نژاد ویستار به سه گروه شامل دو گروه تیمار و یک گروه شاهد تقسیم شدند. به گروه های تیمار از روز یک زایمان تا روز 24 شیردهی آب آشامیدنی به همراه اتانول با غلظت حجمی 2 و 4 درصد تجویز شد و گروه شاهد تنها به آب آشامیدنی دسترسی داشتند. از هر گروه، 9 سر نوزاد موش صحرایی 25 روزه انتخاب و فعالیت سرمی آنزیم های آلانین آمینوترانسفراز، گاماگلوتامیک ترانسفراز، آسپارتات آمینوترانسفراز، آلکالین فسفاتاز، لاکتات دهیدروژناز، کراتین فسفوکیناز، نیتروژن اوره خون و کراتینین اندازه گیری شدند. همچنین مطالعات آسیب شناسی بر روی بافت های مغز، کبد و کلیه انجام شد. داده ها به کمک آزمون های آماری آنالیزواریانس و تست دانت در نرم افزار SPSS تجزیه و تحلیل شدند. یافته ها: در گروه های تجربی میزان فعالیت سرمی آنزیم های آلانین آمینوترانسفراز، آسپارتات آمینوترانسفراز، نیتروژن اوره خون، کراتین فسفوکیناز و آلکالین فسفاتاز اختلاف معنی داری را نسبت به گروه شاهد نشان ندادند (05/0P). مطالعات هیستوپاتولوژیک آسیب های مختلفی را در بافت مغز، کبد و کلیه نوزادان در معرض اتانول 4 حجمی را نشان داد. نتیجه گیری: بر اساس نتایج این مطالعه، مصرف نوشیدنی های الکلی در دوران شیردهی می تواند ضایعات جبران ناپذیری بر روی نوزاد داشته باشد
Predicting the consumption of foods low in saturated fats among people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease: the role of planning in the theory of planned behaviour
The present study tested the utility of an extended version of the theory of planned behaviour that included a measure of planning, in the prediction of eating foods low in saturated fats among adults diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and/or cardiovascular disease Participants (N = 184) completed questionnaires assessing standard theory of planned behaviour measures (attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioural control) and the additional volitional variable of planning in relation to eating foods low in saturated fats Self-report consumption of foods low insaturated fats was assessed 1 month later In partial support of the theory of planned behaviour, results indicated that attitude and subjective norm predicted intentions to eat foods low in saturated fats and intentions and perceived behavioural control predicted the consumption of foods low in saturated fats As an additional variable, planning predicted the consumption of foods low in saturated fats directly and also mediated the intention-behaviour and perceived behavioural control-behaviour relationships, suggesting an important role for planning as a post-intentional construct determining healthy eating choices. Suggestions are offered for interventions designed to improve adherence to healthy eating recommendations for people diagnosed with these chronic conditions with a specific emphasis on the steps and activities that are required to promote a healthier lifestyle. Photolithographic patterning of conducting polyaniline films via flash welding
In this work, two significant advances in photolithographic patterning of polyaniline (PANI) films are reported. Firstly, flash welding was enhanced through the use of polymeric substrates, enabling complete penetration of the welding of PANI films with thicknesses ranging from 5 to over 14 mu m, significantly thicker than reported previously. Masking of parts of the PANI films during flash welding enabled the formation of adjacent conducting and insulating regions as the welding changes the electrical properties of the film. Raman spectroscopy was used to determine the sharpness of these edges, and indicated that the interface between the flash welded and masked regions of the PANI films was typically less than 15 mu m wide. Secondly, using longpass filters, light with a wavelength less than 570 nm was found not to contribute to the welding process. This was confirmed by the use of a 635 nm laser diode for welding the PANI films. This novel approach enabled patterning of PANI films using a direct writing technique with a narrow wavelength light source
Critical perspectives on ‘consumer involvement’ in health research: epistemological dissonance and the know-do gap
Researchers in the area of health and social care (both in Australia and internationally) are encouraged to involve consumers throughout the research process, often on ethical, political and methodological grounds, or simply as ‘good practice’. This paper presents findings from a qualitative study in the UK of researchers’ experiences and views of consumer involvement in health research.
Two main themes are presented in the paper. Firstly, we explore the ‘know-do gap’ which relates to the tensions between researchers’ perceptions of the potential benefits of, and their actual practices in relation to, consumer involvement. Secondly, we focus on one of the reasons for this ‘know-do gap’, namely epistemological dissonance. Findings are linked to issues around consumerism in research, lay/professional knowledges, the (re)production of professional and consumer identities and the maintenance of boundaries between consumers and researchers
Marketing to different Asian communities The importance of culture for framing advertising messages, and for purchase intent
Abstract Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to show that culture has differential effects on purchase intent, using respondents from four very different cultural groups within Indonesia, and two different advertisements (one ethical, another unethical). Design/methodology/approach -The study uses survey methods and a highly structured questionnaire to collect data from respondents in four cultural groups. In total, 100 responses were received from each of these groups within Indonesia (Bali, Batak, Java, and Minang). Data were analyzed using partial least squares. Findings -The results suggest that when advertising to culturally conservative groups, caution is required. Such groups have lower purchase intent when they do not like the advertisement. Moreover, other variables such as attitude towards the advertiser may become salient drivers of purchase intent for such groups if the advertisement is perceived to be unethical. Importantly, neither of these factors are salient for more permissive cultures, regardless of whether the advertisement is perceived to be ethical or unethical. In addition the authors identify a set of "universal paths" by which advertisement-related factors, and company-related factors indirectly influence purchase intent for both permissive and conservative cultures, regardless of the perceived ethicality of the advertisement. Research limitations/implications -The research uses four samples, with 100 respondents per group. Future research could verify these results using larger samples. In addition, the study only uses low involvement consumer products, hence future research could test the model on higher involvement products. Practical implications -Managers should test their advertising messages on target audiences to assess whether they are likeable, as advertisement likeability can influence purchase intent. In addition, whilst factors such as ethicality (and likeability, and attitude towards the advertiser) tend to not affect purchase intent directly except in specific circumstances, these antecedent variables do have strong effects on each other via the universal paths. Originality/value -This is the first study which has examined the effects of ethical/unethical advertisements across four different cultures in Indonesia. The results also reveal an important set of relationships between the model variables, which the authors refer to as the "universal paths." These paths have important implications for advertisers and their clients in their attempts to build brand equity and increase purchase intent
