Self-referenced characterization of space-time couplings in near single-cycle laser pulses
We report on the characterization of space-time couplings in high energy
sub-2-cycle 770nm laser pulses using a self-referencing single-shot method.
Using spatially-encoded arrangement filter-based spectral phase interferometry
for direct electric field reconstruction (SEA-F-SPIDER) we characterize
few-cycle pulses with a wave-front rotation of 2.8x?10^11 rev/sec (1.38 mrad
per half-cycle) and pulses with pulse front tilts ranging from to -0.33 fs/um

Thoracic Pain in a Collegiate Runner (Case Report)
This case study describes the process of examination, re-examination, and intervention for a collegiate runner with mechanical thoracic pain preventing athletic participation and limiting daily function. Unimpaired function fully returned in less than 3 weeks with biweekly sessions to re-establish normal and painfree thoracic mechanics via postural hygiene, exercise, mobilization, and manipulation. The outcome of this case study supports the original hypothesis that the pattern of impairments was in fact responsible for the functional limitations and disability in this athlete. At the time of publication the athlete was without functional limitations and had fully returned to competitive sprinting for the university track team

Executive summary: This report draws upon the combined efforts of
a number of estates professionals, architects,
academics, designers, and senior managers
involved in the planning of new university buildings
for the 21st century. Across these perspectives,
all would agree â although perhaps for different
reasons - that this planning is difficult and that a
number of particular considerations apply in the
design of academic workspaces. Despite these
difficulties, they will also agree that when this
planning goes well, âgoodâ buildings are truly
transformational â for both the university as a
whole and the people who work and study in them.
The value of well-designed buildings goes far
beyond their material costs, and endures long after
those costs have been forgotten ..

The political phenomenology of war reporting
Drawing on interviews with war correspondents, editors, political and military personnel, this article investigates the political dimension of the structuration and structuring effects of the reporterâs experience of journalism. Self-reflection and judgements about colleagues confirm that there are dominant norms for interpreting and acting in conflict scenarios which, while contingent upon socio-historical context, are interpreted as natural. But the prevalence of such codes masks the systematically misrecognized symbolic systems of mystification and ambivalence â systems which reproduce hierarchies and gatekeeping structures in the field, but which are either experienced as unremarkable, dismissed with irony and cynicism, or not present to the consciousness of the war correspondent. The article builds on recent theories of journalistic disposition, ideology, discourse and professionalism, and describes the political dimension of journalistic practice perceived in the field as apolitical. It addresses the gendering of war correspondence, the rise of the journalist as moral authority, and questions the extent to which respondent reflections can be defensibly analytically determined
Photometric Confirmation of MACHO Large Magellanic Cloud Microlensing Events
We present previously unpublished photometry of three Large Magellanic Cloud
(LMC) microlensing events and show that the new photometry confirms the
microlensing interpretation of these events. These events were discovered by
the MACHO Project alert system and were also recovered by the analysis of the
5.7 year MACHO data set. This new photometry provides a substantial increase in
the signal-to-noise ratio over the previously published photometry and in all
three cases, the gravitational microlensing interpretation of these events is
strengthened. The new data consist of MACHO-Global Microlensing Alert Network
(GMAN) follow-up images from the CTIO 0.9 telescope plus difference imaging
photometry of the original MACHO data from the 1.3m "Great Melbourne" telescope
at Mt. Stromlo. We also combine microlensing light curve fitting with
photometry from high resolution HST images of the source stars to provide
further confirmation of these events and to show that the microlensing
interpretation of event MACHO-LMC-23 is questionable. Finally, we compare our
results with the analysis of Belokurov, Evans & Le Du who have attempted to
classify candidate microlensing events with a neural network method, and we
find that their results are contradicted by the new data and more powerful
light curve fitting analysis for each of the four events considered in this
paper. The failure of the Belokurov, Evans & Le Du method is likely to be due

Nutrient capture and sustainable yield maximized by a gear modification in artisanal fishing traps
Coral reef artisanal fisheries are an important source of nutrition and economic wellbeing for coastal communities, but their management is subject to conflicts and tradeoffs between short-term food security benefits and long-term ecological function. One potential tradeoff is between nutrient capture and fish yields, where targeting small, nutrient-dense species may be more valuable for food security than maximizing fish yields, which is more closely aligned with supporting biodiversity and ecological function. We explored these potential tradeoffs by comparing two similar gears: traditional African basket traps and traps modified with an escape gap. Traps without escape gaps captured a higher frequency of fish with body sizes below their estimated lengths at maximum sustainable yield than gated traps. Estimates of nutrient yields for six micronutrients among the 208 captured species indicated high hump-shaped relationships for gated traps and low and linear positive relationships for traditional traps. Maximum nutrients in gated traps frequently corresponded to body sizes at maximum sustainable yield. Daily capture rates of nutrients were above daily needs more often in gated than traditional traps, but calcium values were low in both trap designs. Gated traps were more likely to capture species with unique and potentially important functional traits, including browsing herbivores, which could have negative effects on ecological functions and reef recovery. However, gated traps also catch fewer immature fish and fewer predators. Our results indicate that nutrient yields can be maximized while using a gear that captures larger and more sustainable body sizes in coral reef artisanal fisheries. Preferential targeting of nutrient-dense fishes is only one of many metrics for evaluating a nutrition-centered management strategy and may only be a management target in specific contexts
Effects of Dietary Sodium Intake on Blood Flow Regulation During Exercise in Salt Resistant Individuals
PURPOSE: Dietary sodium intake guidelines is â€2,300 mg/day, yet is exceeded by 90% of Americans. This study examined the impact of a high sodium diet on blood flow regulation during exercise. METHODS: Six males (25 ± 2 years) consumed dietary sodium intake guidelines for two weeks, with one week salt-capsule supplemented (HS: 6,900 mg/day of sodium) and the other week placebo-capsule supplemented (LS: 2,300 mg/day of sodium). At the end of each week, peripheral hemodynamic measurements [blood flow (BF), shear rate (SR), and flow mediated dilation (FMD)/SR)] of the brachial and superficial femoral artery were taken during handgrip (HG) and plantar flexion (PF) exercise, respectively. Each exercise workload was 3 minutes and progressed by 8 kilograms until exhaustion. RESULTS: There were no differences between LS and HS in blood pressure (82 ± 4 v 80 ± 5 mmHg; p = 0.3) or heart rate (56 ± 6 v 59 ± 10 bpm; p = 0.4). HG and PF exercise increased BF, SR, and FMD/SR across workload (p \u3c 0.03 for all), but no difference between diets (p \u3e 0.05 for all). CONCLUSION: Despite previous reports that HS impairs resting vascular function, this study revealed that peripheral vascular function and blood flow regulation during exercise is not impacted by a HS diet.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/gradposters/1082/thumbnail.jp
Comparison between the first Odin-SMR, Aura MLS and CloudSat retrievals of cloud ice mass in the upper tropical troposphere
International audienceEmerging microwave satellite techniques are expected to provide improved global measurements of cloud ice mass. CloudSat, Aura MLS and Odin-SMR fall into this category and first cloud ice retrievals from these instruments are compared. The comparison is made for partial ice water columns above 12 km, following the SMR retrieval product. None of the instruments shows significant false cloud detections and a consistent view of the geographical distribution of cloud ice is obtained, but differences on the absolute levels exist. CloudSat gives the lowest values, with an overall mean of 2.12 g/m2. A comparable mean for MLS is 4.30 g/m2. This relatively high mean can be an indication of overestimation of the vertical altitude of cloud ice by the MLS retrievals. The vertical response of SMR has also some uncertainty, but this does not affect the comparison between MLS and CloudSat. SMR observations are sensitive to cloud inhomogeneities inside the footprint and some compensation is required. Results in good agreement with CloudSat, both in regard of the mean and probability density functions, are obtained for a weak compensation, while a simple characterisation of the effect indicates the need for stronger compensation. The SMR mean was found to be 1.89/2.62/4.10 g/m2 for no/selected/strongest compensation, respectively. Assumptions about the particle size distribution are a consideration for all three instruments, and constitute the dominating retrieval uncertainty for CloudSat. The comparison indicates a retrieval accuracy of about 40% (3.1±1.2 g/m2). This number is already very small compared to uncertainties of cloud ice parametrisation in atmospheric models, but can be decreased further through a better understanding of main retrieval error sources
