Food assistance in Portugal: organizational challenges in three different contexts
Drawing on an ethnographic research study, developed in three different food assistance initiatives (FAI) operating in Portugal, this article seeks to explore the elements that characterize them and the main organizational challenges they face.
Participant observation was carried out in a surplus food redistribution charity, a soup kitchen, and a social supermarket, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with supervisors of these FAI. The study followed an inductive coding strategy and a thematic analysis was developed.
The main results point to an appreciation of the initiatives and the role they play, but they also highlight the existence of several challenges, mainly related to: i) difficulties in accessing sources of funding; ii) the absence of an intervening state; and iii) a scarcity of resources that allow a thorough assessment of their activities and services provided, which weakens the public image of these responses.
The development of food assistance in Europe has a long history. Over the past few years, this sector has grown significantly. Nowadays, it is possible to identify several realities around emergency food provision. However, this heterogeneity has not been sufficiently explored in the literature. In addition, there are few studies that report on the variety of initiatives that co-exist in Portugal and establish a comparison between them. The current paper intends to overcome this gap by seeking to understand the main models of food assistance operating in the country.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

An Exploration of the Practical and Ethical Issues of Research Using Multi-Visual Methods with Children Affected by Chronic Pain
This paper intends to encourage further reflection on the research methods and approaches used to enhance the voices of children with chronic conditions. Visual methods (e.g., ‘draw, write, and tell’ and photo elicitation interviews) have been described as the most appropriate ways to develop research with children as they allow room for children to share their lived experiences in their own terms and to actively participate in the research process, by giving them the opportunity to act as co-researchers. In fact, the use of these methods also contributes to empowering children and mitigating the power differences that exist between the adult researcher and young participants. Drawing on an ongoing study on the experience and management of chronic pain in childhood, this paper provides insights on the usefulness of using these multi- methods to address (potentially) sensitive topics with a (potentially) vulnerable group. The ethical and methodological challenges faced by the researcher when conducting research with ill children in the healthcare context are addressed. The paper looks at the dilemmas of studying chronic pain in childhood and highlights the ways in which multi visual methods can help children in the meaning making of chronic pain.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

“Through the looking glass”: the emotional journey of the volunteer ethnographer when researching sensitive topics with vulnerable populations
This paper extends further research on being both a volunteer and ethnographic researcher and intends to
offer some insights on the emotional challenges of adopting this dual role when conducting research on
sensitive topics and with vulnerable populations. The discussion presented here draws upon an ethnographic
participant observation study of a food redistribution organization (Re-food) held in Lisbon, the capital of
Portugal. The paper builds awareness on the emotional challenges in the field and discusses potential selfreflective
strategies for researchers to cope with the extraordinary demands posed on them by specific
circumstances and subjects. The volunteer ethnographer, when developing their work, is subject to a wide
range of emotional challenges that are related to the functions that they had to develop in the research context
itself due to their dual role, as well as to the vulnerability of participants and the sensitivity of the topic

Nesta transição, tanto a prática
portanto, a diferentes expectativas e interesses associados à
Alimentos (ORA), Cantina Social e Mercearia Social.
The place occupied by food assistance initiatives, in the context of modern
western societies, is shrouded in uncertainty. The development of this type of initiative
has generated multiple debates, inside and outside the academic circle, about what they
represent or should (ideally) represent. It is considered that a central and transversal
element to the different perspectives around these organizations is related to the
reference to their social role. This is precisely the focus of this research: to understand
and analyse the social role played by food assistance initiatives, resorting, for this, to
the perspectives of their actors (supervisors, volunteers, and beneficiaries). These
controversial and contested responses have been analysed in the light of theoretical
frameworks that are considered to be restrictive, promoting circular and closed
readings. Furthermore, especially in the national context, there is an almost complete
absence of empirical studies on these initiatives. Thus, there is a lack of analyses on the
heterogeneity that characterizes the universe of food assistance, on its actors and on the
dynamics between them. In order to address these issues, the present research adopts a
qualitative comparative methodological strategy and a range of ethnographic methods
to explore the perspective of different actors within different models of food assistance
– Food Redistribution Organization (FRO), Soup Kitchen and Social Supermarket. The
analysis and interpretation of the data through an innovative theoretical framework
(critical lens of care) has led to findings that disrupt and challenge the dominant
narratives around food assistance initiatives. The main results point, on the one hand,
to the existence of multiple ‘veiled’ and ‘improvised’ care practices in the initiatives
studied that go beyond food issues and, on the other hand, to the realization that they
can be based on altruistic acts and/or constitute a compensatory mechanism for a service
provided that is understood, by its own actors, as being insufficient. Some reflections
and recommendations are also advanced, both in terms of research and in terms of
public policies and social intervention
