Oxalic acid hydrogenation to glycolic acid:heterogeneous catalysts screening
To meet our ambitions of a future circular economy and drastically reduce CO2 emissions, we need to make use of CO2 as a feedstock. Turning CO2 into monomers to produce sustainable plastics is an attractive option for this purpose. It can be achieved by electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formic acid derivatives, that can subsequently be converted into oxalic acid. Oxalic acid can be a monomer itself and it is a potential new platform chemical for material production, as useful monomers such as glycolic acid and ethylene glycol can be derived from it. Today the most common route from oxalic acid to glycolic acid requires multiple steps as it proceeds via oxalic acid di-esters as intermediates. In this work, we aim to avoid the extra reaction step of esterification. We explore the direct conversion of oxalic acid to glycolic acid in a two-step approach. In the first step, we define the ideal reaction conditions and test commercially available catalysts. We show that the reduction of oxalic acid can be performed at much lower temperatures and glycolic acid yields higher than those reported previously can be obtained. In the second step, we explore the design principles required for ideal catalysts which avoid the formation of acetic acid and ethylene glycol as side products. We show that ruthenium is the most active metal for the reaction and that carbon appears the most suitable support for these catalysts. By adding tin as a promotor, we could increase the selectivity and yield further whilst maintaining high activity of the resulting catalyst. This research lays the foundation for the efficient direct reduction of oxalic acid to glycolic acid and defines the design parameters for even better catalysts and the ideal process and conditions.</p
Space Logistics Modeling and Simulation Analysis using SpaceNet: Four Application Cases
The future of space exploration will not be limited to sortie-style missions to single destinations. Even in present exploration taking place at the International Space Station in low-Earth orbit, logistics is complicated by flights arriving from five launch sites on Earth. The future challenges of space logistics given complex campaigns of interconnected missions in deep space will require innovative tools to aid planning and conceptual design. This paper presents a modeling framework to evaluate the propulsive and logistics feasibility of space exploration from the macro-logistics perspective, which covers the delivery of elements and resources to support demands generated during exploration. The modeling framework is implemented in a versatile and unifying software tool, SpaceNet, for general space exploration scenario analysis. Four space exploration scenarios are presented as application cases to highlight the applicability of the framework across vastly different scenarios. The first case investigates the resupply of the International Space Station between 2010 and 2015 using 77 missions combining NASA, European Space Agency, Japanese Space Agency, Russian Space Agency, and commercial space transportation. The second case models a lunar outpost build-up consisting of 17 flights to achieve continuous human presence over eight years. The third case models and evaluates a conceptual sortie-style mission to a near-Earth object, 1999 AO10. Finally, the fourth case models a flexible path type human exploration in the vicinity of Mars using a combination of human and tele-operated exploration. Taken together these cases demonstrate the challenges and logistical requirements of future human space exploration campaigns during the period from 2010-2050 and illustrate the ability of SpaceNet to model and simulate the feasibility of meeting these requirements.United States. Cryptic Eimeria genotypes are common across the southern but not northern hemisphere
The phylum Apicomplexa includes parasites of medical, zoonotic and veterinary significance. Understanding the global distribution and genetic diversity of these protozoa is of fundamental importance for efficient, robust and long-lasting methods of control. Eimeria spp. cause intestinal coccidiosis in all major livestock animals and are the most important parasites of domestic chickens in terms of both economic impact and animal welfare. Despite having significant negative impacts on the efficiency of food production, many fundamental questions relating to the global distribution and genetic variation of Eimeria spp. remain largely unanswered. Here, we provide the broadest map yet of Eimeria occurrence for domestic chickens, confirming that all the known species (Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria brunetti, Eimeria maxima, Eimeria mitis, Eimeria necatrix, Eimeria praecox, Eimeria tenella) are present in all six continents where chickens are found (including 21 countries). Analysis of 248 internal transcribed spacer sequences derived from 17 countries provided evidence of possible allopatric diversity for species such as E. tenella (FST values ⩽0.34) but not E. acervulina and E. mitis, and highlighted a trend towards widespread genetic variance. We found that three genetic variants described previously only in Australia and southern Africa (operational taxonomic units x, y and z) have a wide distribution across the southern, but not the northern hemisphere. While the drivers for such a polarised distribution of these operational taxonomic unit genotypes remains unclear, the occurrence of genetically variant Eimeria may pose a risk to food security and animal welfare in Europe and North America should these parasites spread to the northern hemisphere
Materials and society — Impacts and responsibilities
The needs of today`s advanced societies have moved well beyond the requirements for food and shelter, etc., and now are focused on such concerns as international peace and domestic security, affordable health care, the swift and secure transmission of information, the conservation of resources, and a clean environment. Progress in materials science and engineering is impacting each of these concerns. This paper will present some examples of how this is occurring, and then comment on ethical dilemmas that can arise as a consequence of technological advances. The need for engineers to participate more fully in the development of public policies that help resolve such dilemmas, and so promote the benefits of advancing technology to society, will be discussed
IS THE DEFENCE MARKET CONTESTABLE? THE CASE OF MILITARY AEROSPACE
I demonstrate the existence of two sources of contestability in the military aerospace market, within producing and export countries, through the State's triple role as unique buyer, regulator and seller. For the producing countries, I introduce the new concept, 'sovereignty price'; that is, the profit a State agrees to grant to its defence firms to perpetuate their domestic activities. This subjective, evolutionary concept provides a dynamic character to the theory of contestable markets. Moreover, I show that contestability is more effective than antitrust policies and a solution of the cost disease.
