Probabilistic geotechnical engineering analysis based on first order reliability method
Limit equilibrium engineering analysis needs the incorporation of probabilistic approaches for the determination of soil strength statistical measures for deterministic and probabilistic analyses. For the commonly used MohrCoulomb strength model, the uncertainty and the characteristic values of cohesion (c) and angle of shearing resistance (f) determination is not straight¬¬forward. This paper applies the first order reliability method (FORM) to estimate these values from the direct shear and the typical triaxial tests. The method is verified with test data. Furthermore, the FORM is applied to the planar failure limit equilibrium problem to determine the statistical measures of the safety margin (SM) and safety factor (SF). It is observed that the critical slip surface for the best estimate of the mean (SMm, SFm), for a 5% probability of exceedance (SMp=5%, SFp=5%) and for the characteristic value (SMk, SFk) do not coincide. It is interesting that the maximum probability of having a SM min 0 or=null SF="" min 1 does="" not="" correspond="" to="" the="" minimum="" best="" estimate="" of="" the="" SM="" or="" SF.="" FORM="" can="" be="" a="" very="" useful="" tool="" for="" complete="" probabilistic="" analyses.="" Further¬more="", probabilistic="" approaches="" applied="" to="" soil="" properties="" estimation="" can="" set="" a="" framework="" for="" the="" selection="" of="" their="" characteristic="" values="" for="" deterministic="" analyses.="
Impact of physical activity category on incidence of cardiovascular disease:Results from the 10-year follow-up of the ATTICA Study (2002–2012)
The aim of the study was to examine the effects of physical activity (PA) level on 10-year cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence, taking into consideration several clinical and lifestyle risk factors along with the potential moderating role of gender. An analysis was undertaken on data from the ATTICA prospective cohort study (10-year follow-up, 2002–2012), which followed a Greek adult population (aged 18–89 years). A total n = 317 of fatal and nonfatal CVD events occurred among the 2020 participants. After adjusting for the lifestyle and clinical risk factors as potential confounders, odds ratio (ORs) of CVD risk of individuals who reported being sufficiently active and highly active were decreased by 58% (95% CI: 0.30, 0.58) and 70% (95% CI: 0.15, 0.56), when compared to those who were inactive/insufficiently active, respectively. Men had nearly two-fold increase in risk of CVD (95% CI: 1.62, 2.18) versus women. Stratified analysis by gender, revealed that sufficiently active men, had 52% (95% CI: 0.24, 0.97) reduced risk of CVD incidence when compared to inactive males, while, for women, the role of PA lost significance following adjusting for lifestyle factors. The current data suggests a beneficial effect of even moderate physical activity levels on 10-year incidence of CVD, reinforcing the importance of physically activity, especially for men
Association of depression and anxiety status with 10-year cardiovascular disease incidence among apparently healthy Greek adults:the ATTICA study
Background: Chronic stress frequently manifests with anxiety and/or depressive symptomatology and may have detrimental cardiometabolic effects over time. As such, recognising the potential links between stress-related psychological disorders and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is becoming increasingly important in cardiovascular epidemiology research. The primary aim of this study was to explore prospectively potential associations between clinically relevant depressive symptomatology and anxiety levels and the 10-year CVD incidence among apparently healthy Greek adults. Design: A population-based, health and nutrition prospective survey. Methods: In the context of the ATTICA Study (2002–2012), 853 adult participants without previous CVD history (453 men (45 ± 13 years) and 400 women (44 ± 18 years)) underwent psychological evaluations through validated, self-reporting depression and anxiety questionnaires. Results: After adjustment for multiple established CVD risk factors, both reported depression and anxiety levels were positively and independently associated with the 10-year CVD incidence, with depression markedly increasing the CVD risk by approximately fourfold (adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) 3.6 (1.3, 11) for depression status; 1.03 (1.0, 1.1) for anxiety levels). Conclusions: Our findings indicate that standardised psychological assessments focusing on depression and anxiety should be considered as an additional and distinct aspect in the context of CVD preventive strategies that are designed and implemented by health authorities at the general population level
