Laser-induced fine structures on silicon exposed to THz-FEL
We found the irradiation of focused linearly polarized terahertz (THz)-waves emitted from THz free-electron laser (THz-FEL) engraved fine periodic stripe structures on the surfaces of single-crystal Si wafers. The experiments were performed at several wavelengths ranging from 50 to 82 μm with a macro-pulse fluence up to 32 J/cm2. The engraved structures are considered equivalent to the laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) produced by the irradiation of a femtosecond (fs)-pulsed laser in the near-infrared (NIR) region. However, the minimum period of ∼1/25 of the wavelength in the present case of THz-FEL is surely much smaller than those reported so far by use of fs-lasers and no more explicable by the so far proposed mechanisms. The finer LIPSS confirmed by longer-wavelength laser excitation by means of THz-FEL motivates investigation into the universal mechanism of LIPSS formation, which has been under a hot debate for decades
Application of a Heat- and Steam-Generating Sheet Increases Peripheral Blood Flow and Induces Parasympathetic Predominance
To promote the practical application of a Japanese traditional medical treatment, such as hot compresses, we developed a plaster-type warming device consisting of a heat- and steam-generating sheet (HSG sheet). First, we tested its effects when applied to the anterior abdominal wall or lumbar region of women complaining of a tendency towards constipation. Application of the sheet to either region produced a feeling of comfort in the abdomen, as assessed by a survey of the subjects. The significant increases in the total hemoglobin observed in these regions suggested an increase in peripheral blood flow, and significant increases in the HF component on ECG and in the amplitude of gastric motility suggested parasympathetic predominance. We concluded that application of the HSG sheet improves the peripheral hemodynamics and autonomic regulation, induces a feeling of comfort in the abdomen, and provides a beneficial environment for the improvement of gastrointestinal movements
Histological Evaluation of Lumbar Spine Changes in Rats with Collagen-induced Arthritis
【Background】 To histologically evaluate lumbar involvement in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) by investigating rats with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) and to assess the potential effects of RA on the discovertebral joints and facet joints. 【Methods】 Seven-month-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into groups with CIA and without CIA (control). All rats were sacrificed at 8 weeks after initial sensitization and the lumbar spine (L5/6) was harvested. Then the lumbar spine block specimens were stained with Villaneuva bone stain and sectioned in the midsagittal plane. The left facet joints were also sectioned in the midaxial plane. Specimens were studied under a microscope and infiltration of inflammatory cells was investigated. 【Results】 In the CIA group, lumbar lesions were observed in 13/18 rats (76%). Lymphocytes infiltrated into the anterior rim of the vertebral bodies only in 2 rats, while lymphocytes infiltrated the facet joints only in 4 rats. Both sites were involved in 7 rats. In addition, osteoclasts invaded the anterior rim of the vertebral bodies and formed cavities that also contained lymphocytes. Formation of pannus was seen in the facet joints in 11/18 rats. 【Conclusion】 In CIA rats, infiltration of inflammatory cells into the anterior rim of the vertebral bodies alone or into the facet joints alone was demonstrated in 2 rats and 4 rats, respectively, while both sites were involved in 7 rats. Therefore, lesions at the anterior rim of the vertebral body did not arise secondary to facet joint involvement, but were caused by CIA along with synovial lesions of the facet joints

We present a statistical study of the redshift evolution of the cluster
galaxy population over a wide redshift range from 0.1 to 1.1, using
optically-selected CAMIRA clusters from ~deg of the Hyper
Suprime-Cam (HSC) Wide S16A data. Our stacking technique with a statistical
background subtraction reveals color-magnitude diagrams of red-sequence and
blue cluster galaxies down to faint magnitudes of . We find that
the linear relation of red-sequence galaxies in the color-magnitude diagram
extends down to the faintest magnitudes we explore with a small intrinsic
scatter . The scatter does not evolve significantly
with redshift. The stacked color-magnitude diagrams are used to define red and
blue galaxies in clusters for studying their radial number density profiles
without resorting to photometric redshifts of individual galaxies. We find that
red galaxies are significantly more concentrated toward cluster centers and
blue galaxies dominate the outskirt of clusters. We explore the fraction of red
galaxies in clusters as a function of redshift, and find that the red fraction
decreases with increasing distances from cluster centers. The red fraction
exhibits a moderate decrease with increasing redshift. The radial number
density profiles of cluster member galaxies are also used to infer the location
of the steepest slope in the three dimensional galaxy density profiles. For a
fixed threshold in richness, we find little redshift evolution in this

Lactotransferrin in Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus) Seminal Plasma Correlates with Semen Quality
Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) have highly variable ejaculate quality within individuals, greatly reducing the efficacy of artificial insemination and making it difficult to devise a sperm cryopreservation protocol for this endangered species. Because seminal plasma influences sperm function and physiology, including sperm motility, the objectives of this study were to characterize the chemistry and protein profiles of Asian elephant seminal plasma and to determine the relationships between seminal plasma components and semen quality. Ejaculates exhibiting good sperm motility (≥65%) expressed higher percentages of spermatozoa with normal morphology (80.3+-13.0 vs. 44.9+-30.8%) and positive Spermac staining (51.9+-14.5 vs. 7.5+-14.4%), in addition to higher total volume (135.1+-89.6 vs. 88.8+-73.1 ml) and lower sperm concentration (473.0+-511.2 vs. 1313.8+-764.7 x 106 cells ml-1) compared to ejaculates exhibiting poor sperm motility (≤10%; P\u3c0.05). Comparison of seminal plasma from ejaculates with good versus poor sperm motility revealed significant differences in concentrations of creatine phosphokinase, alanine aminotransferase, phosphorus, sodium, chloride, magnesium, and glucose. These observations suggest seminal plasma influences semen quality in elephants. One- and two-dimensional (2D) gel electrophoresis revealed largely similar compositional profiles of seminal plasma proteins between good and poor motility ejaculates. However, a protein of ~80 kDa was abundant in 85% of ejaculates with good motility, and was absent in 90% of poor motility ejaculates (P\u3c0.05). We used mass spectrometry to identify this protein as lactotransferrin, and immunoblot analysis to confirm this identification. Together, these findings lay a functional foundation for understanding the contributions of seminal plasma in the regulation of Asian elephant sperm motility, and for improving semen collection and storage in this endangered species

Distinct cellular pathways select germline-encoded and somatically mutated antibodies into immunological memory
One component of memory in the antibody system is long-lived memory B cells selected for the expression of somatically mutated, high-affinity antibodies in the T cell–dependent germinal center (GC) reaction. A puzzling observation has been that the memory B cell compartment also contains cells expressing unmutated, low-affinity antibodies. Using conditional Bcl6 ablation, we demonstrate that these cells are generated through proliferative expansion early after immunization in a T cell–dependent but GC-independent manner. They soon become resting and long-lived and display a novel distinct gene expression signature which distinguishes memory B cells from other classes of B cells. GC-independent memory B cells are later joined by somatically mutated GC descendants at roughly equal proportions and these two types of memory cells efficiently generate adoptive secondary antibody responses. Deletion of T follicular helper (Tfh) cells significantly reduces the generation of mutated, but not unmutated, memory cells early on in the response. Thus, B cell memory is generated along two fundamentally distinct cellular differentiation pathways. One pathway is dedicated to the generation of high-affinity somatic antibody mutants, whereas the other preserves germ line antibody specificities and may prepare the organism for rapid responses to antigenic variants of the invading pathogen
