A study of poultry processing plant noise characteristics and potential noise control techniques
The noise environment in a typical poultry processing plant was characterized by developing noise contours for two representative plants: Central Soya of Athens, Inc., Athens, Georgia, and Tip Top Poultry, Inc., Marietta, Georgia. Contour information was restricted to the evisceration are of both plants because nearly 60 percent of all process employees are stationed in this area during a normal work shift. Both plant evisceration areas were composed of tile walls, sheet metal ceilings, and concrete floors. Processing was performed in an assembly-line fashion in which the birds travel through the area on overhead shackles while personnel remain at fixed stations. Processing machinery was present throughout the area. In general, the poultry processing noise problem is the result of loud sources and reflective surfaces. Within the evisceration area, it can be concluded that only a few major sources (lung guns, a chiller component, and hock cutters) are responsible for essentially all direct and reverberant sound pressure levels currently observed during normal operations. Consequently, any effort to reduce the noise problem must first address the sound power output of these sources and/or the absorptive qualitities of the room
Influence of Logging on Douglas Fir Beetle Populations
All species of bark beetles of economic importance prefer to attack freshly-killed host material. Logging slash, wind-throw, and fire-killed timber provide ideal breeding grounds for bark beetles. A few species, mostly in the Dendroctonus group, are able to kill living trees. When beetles in the group, raised in preferred host material, cannot find any or enough freshly-killed trees, logs, or slash to enter, they may attack living trees. In the interior of British Columbia, infestations of the Douglas fir beetle can often be traced to logging disturbance
Space Station Microgravity and Materials Processing Facility: A National Laboratory Dedicated to U.S. Interests
An important element of the U.S. Space Station will be NASA\u27s Microgravity and Materials Processing Facility (MMPF). The MMPF will be a national facility dedicated to extended periods of low-g processing of materials for research, development, and commercial applications.
Processing materials and equipment will be supplied by NASA, academic institutions, and U.S. domestic concerns.

A quantum mechanical model of the upper bounds of the cascading contribution to the second hyperpolarizability
Microscopic cascading of second-order nonlinearities between two molecules
has been proposed to yield an enhanced third-order molecular nonlinear-optical
response. In this contribution, we investigate the two-molecule cascaded second
hyperpolarizability and show that it will never exceed the fundamental limit of
a single molecule with the same number of electrons as the two-molecule system.
We show the apparent divergence behavior of the cascading contribution to the
second hyperpolarizability vanishes when properly taking into account the
intermolecular interactions. Although cascading can never lead to a larger
nonlinear-optical response than a single molecule, it provides alternative
molecular design configurations for creating materials with large third-order
susceptibilities that may be difficult to design into a single molecule.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 1 tabl
High-order harmonic generation from polyatomic molecules including nuclear motion and a nuclear modes analysis
We present a generic approach for treating the effect of nuclear motion in
the high-order harmonic generation from polyatomic molecules. Our procedure
relies on a separation of nuclear and electron dynamics where we account for
the electronic part using the Lewenstein model and nuclear motion enters as a
nuclear correlation function. We express the nuclear correlation function in
terms of Franck-Condon factors which allows us to decompose nuclear motion into
modes and identify the modes that are dominant in the high-order harmonic
generation process. We show results for the isotopes CH and CD and
thereby provide direct theoretical support for a recent experiment [Baker {\it
et al.}, Science {\bf 312}, 424 (2006)] that uses high-order harmonic
generation to probe the ultra-fast structural nuclear rearrangement of ionized

Developing interventions to change recycling behaviors: A case study of applying behavioral science
The Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) and the Behavior Change Wheel (BCW) are frameworks that can be used to develop recycling interventions. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the utility of these frameworks for developing recycling interventions. 20 semistructured interviews with university building users were analyzed using the TDF and BCW. Environmental context and resources, beliefs about consequences, knowledge, and intention were identified as the key theoretical domains influencing recycling behaviors. The BCW was used to develop recommendations for intervention. This research is the first case study to demonstrate how the TDF and the BCW can be used to develop recycling interventions
Making music for mental health: how group drumming mediates recovery
BACKGROUND: While music-making interventions are increasingly recognised as enhancing mental health, little is known of why music may engender such benefit. The objective of this article is to elucidate the features of a programme of group drumming known to enable mental health recovery. METHODS: Qualitative research was conducted with 39 mental health patients and carers who had demonstrated recovery following engagement with a programme of group djembe drumming in the UK. Data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews and focus group interviews designed to understand the connection between drumming and recovery and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). RESULTS: Results revealed three overarching features of the drumming intervention: (1) the specific features of drumming, including drumming as a form of non-verbal communication, as a connection with life through rhythm, and as a grounding experience that both generates and liberates energy; (2) the specific features of the group, including the group as a space of connection in and through the rhythmic features of the drumming, as well as facilitating feelings of belonging, acceptance, safety and care, and new social interactions; (3) the specific features of the learning, including learning as an inclusive activity in which the concept of mistakes is dissolved and in which there is musical freedom, supported by an embodied learning process expedited by the musical facilitator. CONCLUSION: The findings provide support for the conceptual notion of 'creative practice as mutual recovery', demonstrating that group drumming provides a creative and mutual learning space in which mental health recovery can take place
