    Breaking the Silence: Postpartum Depression Among Reproductive-aged Women in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

    Postpartum depression (PPD) is internationally recognized as one of the most prevalent and severe but neglected maternal mental health complications of childbirth. Previous studies have indicated that there is a high burden of disease associated with PPD in both developed and developing countries. However, there remain gaps in the current literature regarding the recognition and management of PPD in remote parts of the developing world. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to understand the perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs of health professionals towards PPD and examine the factors that either facilitated or hindered its recognition and management in a remote setting in Nigeria. The pen-3 cultural model was the conceptual framework used in this study. The study focused specifically on professionals with regard to the recognition and management of PPD in a rural hospital in Nigeria. Ten semi structured qualitative interviews were conducted with doctors and nurses from a rural hospital in Nigeria. Data were analyzed via phenomenological interpretative analysis. Results from the study revealed that health professionals in a remote setting in Nigeria have a working knowledge of PPD and perceived the condition as a serious public health concern, but were faced with numerous barriers from the institutional, organizational, and community level that hindered their ability to recognize and manage PPD in a timely manner. These results make an important contribution to the existing literature and can enhance social change initiatives through the enhancement of awareness of PPD, and the need for improvement of policies on comprehensive maternal mental health in remote parts of Nigeria

    This paper seeks to examine the gender specific challenges faced by the girl-child, despite landmark legislations. And identify the cultural and traditional gender biases reflected in societal law and practices. The paper highlighted the premium value placed on child preferences and analysed cultural beliefs which hinder her access to education. It aims at contributing knowledge and creating awareness about the deep rooted discriminatory challenges confronting the girl child. The study recommends gender specific policies to emancipate, develop and empower the girl-child for national development.     HUBUNGAN ANTARA KONSEP DIRI GURU DAN PEMBERIAN MOTIVASI KEPALA SEKOLAH TERHADAP KOMPETENSI PEDAGOGIK GURU

    Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui ada tidaknya hubungan antara konsep diri guru dan pemberian motivasi kepala sekolah terhadap kompetensi pedagogik guru di SMA Negeri 1 Dringu Kabupaten Probolinggo Tahun 2016. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kuantitatif dengan pendekatan korelasional. Sampel penelitian diambil sejumlah 35 orang guru di SMA Negeri 1 Dringu Kabupaten Probolinggo tahun 2016. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan: (1)Ada hubungan yang signifikan antara konsep diri guru terhadap kompetensi pedagogik guru, berdasarkan pengujian hipotesis diperoleh harga rX1Y positif yaitu 0,504 dengan tingkat signifikansi < 0,05 yaitu 0,002. (2)Ada hubungan yang signifikan antara pemberian motivasi kepalasekolah terhadap kompetensi pedagogik guru, berdasarkan pengujian hipotesis diperoleh harga rX2Y adalah positif yaitu 0,423 dengan tingkat signifikansi < 0,05 yaitu 0,011. (3)Ada hubungan yang signifikan antara konsep diri guru dan pemberian motivasi kepala sekolah terhadap kompetensi pedagogik guru, berdasarkan pengujian hipotesis yang diperoleh bahwa F-hitung sebesar 8,692 (positif) dan tingkat signifikansi 0,001 < 0,05. Besarnya sumbangan relatif dan efektif berdasarkan hasil pengujian hipotesis adalah: (1)Sumbangan Efektif konsep diri sebesar 21,5%; (2)Sumbangan Relatif Konsep Diri sebesar 61,2% ;dan (3)Sumbangan Efektif Motivasi Kepala Sekolah sebesar 13,6% ;(4)Sumbangan Relatif Motivasi Kepala Sekolah sebesar 38,8%

    Community based mental health care: a necessity for realising the right to independent living and community inclusion of persons with mental disabilities in Uganda

    Using a purely doctrinal legal analysis, the thesis advocates for the provision of community based mental health care as a key strategy in promoting the realisation of the right to independent living and community inclusion for persons with mental disabilities (PWMDs) in Uganda. Uganda ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRDP) on the 25th September 2008 without reservations following its adoption in 2006. This is in addition to earlier undertakings in a number of preceding international and regional human rights treaties that guaranteed the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs). Prior to the ratification of the UNCRPD, Uganda's also had national progressive legal framework, like the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, 1995 and the Person with Disability Act 2006 (now Persons with Disabilities Act 2020) that provided meaningful safeguards towards the protection of the rights of PWDs. Despite these commendable legislative gains, the thesis contends that Uganda is still largely premised in the medical model of disability and far from tangibly attaining the aspirations set out in the UNCRPD and its paradigm shift to the social and human rights model of disability. The recently enacted Mental Health Act 2019 though progressive still falls short of streamlining the provision of community based mental health care to address the long standing practice of institutionalisation of PWMDs in mental health facilities and prisons. The social and environmental barriers manifested in negative attitudes, stigma and discrimination are characteristic of the populace. Institutionalisation, isolation and segregation of PWMDs in violation of Article 19 of the UNCRPD and other related articles is evidently persistent. To exacerbate the situation, Uganda has not yet conceived a plan to design an independent or community living strategy or policy for her citizens with mental disabilities

    PENGEMBANGAN MEDIA GOI GAME BERBASIS WEB PADA PEMBELAJARAN KOSAKATA BAHASA JEPANG BUKU NIHONGO 1 DI SMA

    Perkembangan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi seperti internet dalam dunia pendidikan dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai media pembelajaran bahasa. Namun kenyataanya pembelajaran dengan memanfaatkan internet dalam pembelajaran bahasa Jepang dirasa sangat kurang. Kenyataan ini melatar belakangi penelitian &nbsp;pengembangan media Goi Game berbasis web pada pembelajaran kosakata bahasa Jepang. Penelitian dan pengembangan ini menggunakan modifikasi prosedur pengembangan yang dikemukakan oleh Sugiyono. Penelitian ini memiliki dua rumusan masalah dengan tujuan untuk menguji kelayakan dan efektivitas media pembelajaran yang dikembangkan. Kelayakan media dilihat dari aspek isi dan aspek penyajian&nbsp; dapat diketahui berdasarkan penilaian dari ahli media dan ahli materi, sedangkan efektivitas media diketahui dari hasil uji coba produk 1 dan uji coba produk 2 di SMA. Uji coba produk dilakukan dengan menggunakan model bofere after yaitu dengan membandingkan efektivitas media lama dan media baru. Subjek yang&nbsp; yang dipilih siswa kelas XI Bahasa SMA N 2 Lamongan. Kualitas dari Goi Game berbasis web yang dikembangkan mendapat presentase nilai sebesar 92,45% dari ahli media dengan kriteria sangat baik dan presentase nilai sebesar 90,43% dari ahli materi dengan kriteria sangat baik. Hasil uji coba produk 1 pada pretest mendapat presentase nilai indeks prestasi kelompok sebesar 95,66% dengan kriteria sangat baik, sedangkan hasil posttest setelah menggunakan media buku mendapatkan presentase nilai indeks prestasi kelompok sebesar&nbsp; 86,5% dengan kriteria sangat baik. Hasil penelitian uji coba produk 2 pretest setelah menggunakan media buku memperoleh presentase nilai indeks prestasi kelompok sebesar 69,66% dengan kriteria baik, sedangkan hasil posttest setelah menggunakan media Goi Game berbasis web memperoleh penilaian sebesar 91,16% dengan kriteria sangat baik. Dari hasil validasi ahli media dan ahli materi serta uji coba produk terbukti bahwa pengembangan media&nbsp; Goi Game berbasis web pada pembelajaran kosakata bahasa Jepang buku Nihongo 1 di SMA mendapat penilaian sangat baik dan layak digunakan sebagai media pembelajaran. Kata kunci: Goi Game berbasis Web, pembelajaran kosakata bahasa Jepang. 要旨 現在教育の世界では、インターネットなどの情報通信技術が言語学習の媒体として使用されることができる。しかし、日本語学習のための媒体が非常に不足していると思われる。これは、日本語の語彙を勉強するための、ウエブベース語彙ゲーム開発の背景だ。 この語彙ゲームはSugiyonoによって開発され、提案された研究方法を用いた。今研究では、開発した語彙ゲームの実現可能性と有効性をテストすることを目指している。UNESAのメディア専門家と教授から効果的媒体として認められた。さらに 高校での実験1の試みと実験2の試みからも効果的媒体として認められた。ウエブベース語彙ゲームの効果がメディア専門家からとても良いに92,45%、教授から90,43%支持された。実験1では語彙ゲームを使ったプレテストで実験効果からとても良いに95,66%、語彙ゲームを使わず本で勉強する方法のポステストでは86,5%支持された。実験2では、語彙ゲームを使わず本で勉強する方法のプレテストでは良いに69,66%、語彙ゲームを使用し勉強する方法のポステストでは91,16%支持された。UNESAのメディア専門家や教授だけでなく、語彙ゲームは、高校でも日本語1の教科書を学習するための媒体として非常に良いと評価された。 キーワード:ウエブベース語彙ゲーム、日本語の語彙を勉強する

    Macromolecular 4-aminoquinoline compounds as potential antimalarial drugs

    4-Aminoquinolines have a long and successful history as antimalarials as they have provided a number of useful antimalarials. P. falciparum, a causative organism of the most deadly form of human malaria, is generally slow to develop resistance to these drugs. 4-Aminoquinoline derivatives appear to bind to nucleoproteins and interfere with protein synthesis in susceptible organisms; the drugs intercalate readily into double-stranded DNA and inhibit both DNA and RNA polymerase. In addition, 4-aminoquinolines are found to concentrate in parasites’ digestive vacuoles, thereby increasing the pH of the vacuoles, and thus interfere with the parasites’ ability to metabolize. 4-Aminoquinolines on the other hand have raised considerable interest because of their anti-carcinogenic properties and their ability to inhibit tumor development and presently are being used in combination therapy with anti-cancer drugs to inhibit development of drug resistance in cancer cells caused by anti-cancer drugs. 8-Aminoquinoline mechanism is quite different from that of 4-aminoquinoline in that the 8-aminoquinolines are converted in the liver to an active quinone metabolite creating oxygen free radicals that interfere with the plasmodial electron chain transport chain during respiration. Anti-cancer drugs are often toxic when delivered straight, but the bioreversible drug conjugation of anticancer drugs to water-soluble macromolecular carriers has proved to enhance the therapeutic effectiveness of anticancer drugs. Following facilitated pharmacokinetics pathways, the conjugates, acting as prodrugs, will release the active drug species in the transformed target cells and their designs are geared towards reducing pharmacological barriers of toxicity, drug resistance and poor bioavailability encountered with currently used anti-cancer drugs. In order to demonstrate the multidrug binding capacity of polyaspartamide, the co-conjugation of 4- and 8-aminoquinoline derivatives with anti-cancer agents was achieved, and the co-conjugates are expected to serve as resistance-reducing agents. This present project aimed at the anchoring of 4-aminoquinoline to various amine functionalized polymeric carriers, and selected macromolecular 4-aminoquinoline compounds were screened for in vitro antiplasmodial activity

    Teaching and learning mathematics and science in English in primary schools in the state of Johor, Malaysia

    This article attempts to highlight the opinions of the public on the effectiveness of the use of English in teaching and learning Mathematics and Science (PPSMI) in primary schools in Johor. After nearly six years of its implementation, some people found out that the students have not demonstrated a good command of the language and the acquisition of knowledge of Mathematics and Science is seen to be declining. The teachers also do not seem to adapt well in the implementation. A group of respondents from among the headmasters and headmistress have given their views through a questionnaire and structured interview that showed the government's intention to strengthen the English language in teaching and learning Mathematics and Science did not show an impressive result. Thus, the study suggests that the government can try to give an option of using both languages in the implementation of this policy

    THE RELEVANCE OF LEVERAGE, PROFITABILITY, MARKET PERFORMANCE, AND MACROECONOMIC TO STOCK PRICE

    Abstract: This research aimed to test and analyze the influence of DER, ROE, PER, Interest Rate, and Currency to stock price. This research used quantitative approach by implementing multiple regression analysis method. The research population is food and beverage companies listed in Indonesian Stock Exchange in the period of 2010-2014 out of which 11 companies were selected as samples to be observed. The result showed that fundamental variables that have positive effect on stock price are ROE and PER. Fundamental variables that have negative effect is DER. Interest rate and exchange rate do not affect stock price. Keywords: Leverage, profitability, interest rate, exchange rate, stock price. Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji dan menganalisis pengaruh DER, ROE, PER, suku bunga, dan nilai tukar terhadap harga saham. Sebanyak 11 perusahaan makanan dan minuman yang terdaftar di Bursa Efek Indonesia tahun 2010-2014 ditelaah untuk diobservasi. Jenis penelitian ini adalah explanatory research dengan menggunakan metode linear multipel. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan variabel fundamental yang berpengaruh positif terhadap harga saham adalah rasio ROE dan PER. Sedangkan variabel fundamental yang berpengaruh negatif terhadap harga saham adalah rasio DER.  Suku bunga dan nilai tukar tidak berpengaruh terhadap harga saham. Kata Kunci: Leverage, profitability, interest rate, exchange rate, stock price

    Instructional Captioned Film, Conventional Sign Method And Academic Performance Of Hearing Impaired Students In Economics In Special Schools In Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

    The study was carried out to examine the effect of Instructional Captioned Film on academic performance of hearing impaired student in economics as compared with conventional sign methods in a Special School in  Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.  Non-randomised pretest posttest design was adopted. To achieve the objectives of the study therefore 37 SS I economics students in Special School in Uyo Local Government Area were used as the sample for the study.  The subjects were divided into experimental and control groups. Experimental group were treated with instructional captioned film while control group were treated with conventional sign method. Economics Performance Test (EPT) was used for data collection.  Two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated and tested using the Analysis of Covariance at 0.05 significant level. The result revealed that there is an overall significant difference of hearing impaired students academic performance when taught with the use Instructional Captioned Film and those taught using conventional sign method. It was also revealed that gender does not significantly influence academic performance of hearing impaired economics students.  The study therefore recommended the use of Instructional Captioned Film for teaching the hearing impaired students in Special School in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
