Non-Newtonian and flow pulsatility effects in simulation models of a stented intracranial aneurysm
Permission to redistribute provided by publishers.Three models of different stent designs implanted in a cerebral aneurysm, originating from the Virtual Intracranial Stenting Challenge'07, are meshed and the flow characteristics simulated using commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software in order to investigate the effects of non-Newtonian viscosity and pulsatile flow. Conventional mass inflow and wall shear stress (WSS) output are used as a means of comparing the cfd simulations. In addition, a WSS distribution is presented, which clearly discriminates in favour of the stent design identified by other groups. It is concluded that non-Newtonian and pulsatile effects are important to include in order to avoid underestimating wss, to understand dynamic flow effects, and to discriminate more effectively between stent designs. © Authors 2011

Effect of stent position on flow characteristics in a cerebral aneurysm
The position of an intracranial stent in relation to the ostium of a cerebral aneurysm can
significantly affect the blood flow characteristics through the ostium and inside the aneurysm.
An idealised cerebral artery and aneurysm were simulated with a pulsatile flow. Simulation
results show that the effect on mass inflow between two stent positions is about 20%
whereas the difference in the porosity effect of the pattern at these two positions is around
3%. The remainder may be attributed to differences in flow velocity profile across the stent
into the aneurysm. The implications for clinical practice are an important consideration as the
surgeon may place the stent in any position between the two investigated and hence this will
lead to markedly different stent performance. Therefore, computational tools that take into
account the variability of stent placement will be valuable for assisting surgical planning
A Tunable Echelle Imager
We describe and evaluate a new instrument design called a Tunable Echelle
Imager (TEI). In this instrument, the output from an imaging Fabry-Perot
interferometer is cross-dispersed by a grism in one direction and dispersed by
an echelle grating in the perpendicular direction. This forms a mosaic of
different narrow-band images of the same field on a detector. It offers a
distinct wavelength multiplex advantage over a traditional imaging Fabry-Perot
device.
Potential applications of the TEI include spectrophotometric imaging and

Have increased deaths at home during the pandemic returned to pre-pandemic levels? An analysis of publicly available Scottish death registrations
Deaths at home increased in Scotland at the start of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic by ~35%. The majority did not involve COVID-19. This has implications for resource allocation and care at the end of life. Publicly available weekly death registrations by National Records Scotland (NRS) between 2015 and week 25 of 2023 were summarized by place of death. Linear and logistic regressions of the number and proportion of deaths at home, respectively, between 2015 and 2019, were used to estimate the expected number and proportion of deaths in the period 2020–2023 had the pandemic not happened. The number of deaths at home continues in 2023 at rates similar to the pandemic period and has not reverted to pre-pandemic levels. Had the pre-pandemic trend of growth in deaths at home continued, the number of deaths observed in 2020 would not be observed until 2025–2032. Deaths at home increased across Local Authorities but the scale of the increase varied. The impact of the increased number of deaths at home on quality of care and quality of death is not known and requires further study
Conserved mechanisms of microtubule-stimulated ADP release, ATP binding, and force generation in transport kinesins
Kinesins are a superfamily of microtubule-based ATP-powered motors, important for multiple, essential cellular functions. How microtubule binding stimulates their ATPase and controls force generation is not understood. To address this fundamental question, we visualized microtubule-bound kinesin-1 and kinesin-3 motor domains at multiple steps in their ATPase cycles - including their nucleotide-free states - at ~7Å resolution using cryo-electron microscopy. In both motors, microtubule binding promotes ordered conformations of conserved loops that stimulate ADP release, enhance microtubule affinity and prime the catalytic site for ATP binding. ATP binding causes only small shifts of these nucleotide-coordinating loops but induces large conformational changes elsewhere that allow force generation and neck linker docking towards the microtubule plus end. Family-specific differences across the kinesin-microtubule interface account for the distinctive properties of each motor. Our data thus provide evidence for a conserved ATP-driven mechanism for kinesins and reveal the critical mechanistic contribution of the microtubule interface
Nonlinear Spin Dynamics in Ferromagnets with Electron-Nuclear Coupling
Nonlinear spin motion in ferromagnets is considered with nonlinearity due to
three factors: (i) the sample is prepared in a strongly nonequilibrium state,
so that evolution equations cannot be linearized as would be admissible for
spin motion not too far from equilibrium, (ii) the system considered consists
of interacting electron and nuclear spins coupled with each other via hyperfine
forces, and (iii) the sample is inserted into a coil of a resonant electric
circuit producing a resonator feedback field. Due to these nonlinearities,
coherent motion of spins can develop, resulting in their ultrafast relaxation.
A complete analysis of mechanisms triggering such a coherent motion is
presented. This type of ultrafast coherent relaxation can be used for studying

The need for a marker predicting benefit following cardiovascular disease risk reduction treatment
Developing a robust method to study characteristics of vascular flow using ultrasound may be useful to assess endothelial function and vasodilatation. There are four stages in this proposal. 1.The first stage is to standardise and validate the methodology to enable computational risk flow data and other flow characteristics to be used clinically. (Current Study). Further development of fluid modelling methods will enable particulate haemodynamics to be investigated, and incorporate detailed endothelial structure together with cellular pathways. 2. This should be followed up by studies in different patient groups investigating the association between the derived values and estimated risk (using other methods such as Framingham risk score). 3. Then, associated with underlying cardiovascular risk, prospective studies would be made to establish whether computational flow dynamic data can predict outcome. If successful it could prove to be a very useful marker of benefit following treatment in a clinical setting
Survey of Planetary Nebulae at 30 GHz with OCRA-p
We report the results of a survey of 442 planetary nebulae at 30 GHz. The
purpose of the survey is to develop a list of planetary nebulae as calibration
sources which could be used for high frequency calibration in future. For 41
PNe with sufficient data, we test the emission mechanisms in order to evaluate
whether or not spinning dust plays an important role in their spectra at 30
GHz.
The 30-GHz data were obtained with a twin-beam differencing radiometer,
OCRA-p, which is in operation on the Torun 32-m telescope. Sources were scanned
both in right ascension and declination. We estimated flux densities at 30 GHz
using a free-free emission model and compared it with our data.
The primary result is a catalogue containing the flux densities of 93
planetary nebulae at 30 GHz. Sources with sufficient data were compared with a
spectral model of free-free emission. The model shows that free-free emission
can generally explain the observed flux densities at 30 GHz thus no other
emission mechanism is needed to account for the high frequency spectra.Comment: 10 pages, 7 Postscript figures, to be published in A&

Absence of association between behavior problems in childhood and hypertension in midlife
Background It is known that behavior in childhood is associated with certain physical and mental health problems in midlife. However, there is limited evidence on the role of childhood behavior problems in the development of hypertension in adulthood. The present study aimed to examine whether behavior problems in childhood influenced the risk of hypertension in midlife in the United Kingdom 1958 birth cohort. Methods The 1958 British birth cohort comprised 17,638 individuals born in the first week of March 1958 in the United Kingdom. Behavior problems were assessed at 7, 11, and 16 years of age by parents and teachers. At age 45, blood pressure was measured and hypertension was recorded if blood pressure was ≥140/90 mm Hg or if the participants were informed by their health professionals that they had high blood pressure. Behavioral information was reported according to the Rutter Children's Behaviour Questionnaire (RCBQ) and the Bristol Social Adjustment Guide (BSAG). Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to examine behavior problems in childhood in relation to hypertension at 45 years of age according to logistic regression analysis, with adjustment for sex, social class in childhood and adulthood, childhood cognition, birth weight, gestational age at birth, body mass index (BMI), smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical activity. Results Behavior problems reported by parents at 7, 11, and 16 years were not associated with hypertension in midlife (OR, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.81, 1.07; OR, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.81, 1.11; OR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.85, 1.12, respectively). Similarly, teacher-reported behavior problems at 7, 11, and 16 years were not associated with hypertension in midlife (OR, 0.92; 95% CI, 0.72, 1.18; OR, 0.92; 95% CI, 0.84, 1.02; OR, 1.03; 95% CI, 0.92, 1.15, respectively). Further separate analyses showed similar results for males and females. Conclusion There is no association between behavior problems in childhood and hypertension in midlife
