    Spectral flow as a map between N=(2,0)-models

    The space of (2,0)(2,0) models is of particular interest among all heterotic-string models because it includes the models with the minimal SO(10)SO(10) unification structure, which is well motivated by the Standard Model of particle physics data. The fermionic Z2Ă—Z2\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2 heterotic-string models revealed the existence of a new symmetry in the space of string configurations under the exchange of spinors and vectors of the SO(10)SO(10) GUT group, dubbed spinor-vector duality. Such symmetries are important for the understanding of the landscape of string vacua and ultimately for the possible operation of a dynamical vacuum selection mechanism in string theory. In this paper we generalize this idea to arbitrary internal rational Conformal Field Theories (RCFTs). We explain how the spectral flow operator normally acting within a general (2,2)(2,2) theory can be used as a map between (2,0)(2,0) models.     Deep Supported Excavation in Difficult Ground Conditions in the City of Patras, Greece — Measured vs. Predicted Behavior

    The technical characteristics of a deep supported excavation project using anchored diaphragm walls and the measured (by inclinometers) behavior of the soil retaining system are presented. The measured behavior is then compared with the predicted behavior using a finite element model of the excavation. The comparison shows a good agreement in a location where the soil profile is well defined. However, differences in the magnitude of the displacements were observed when the information on the soil profile was incomplete due to the variability of the deposits on site

    On path-complete Lyapunov functions: geometry and comparison

    We study optimization-based criteria for the stability of switching systems, known as Path-Complete Lyapunov Functions, and ask the question “can we decide algorithmically when a criterion is less conservative than another'”. Our contribution is twofold. First, we show that a Path-Complete Lyapunov Function, which is a multiple Lyapunov function by nature, can always be expressed as a common Lyapunov function taking the form of a combination of minima and maxima of the elementary functions that compose it. Geometrically, our results provide for each Path-Complete criterion an implied invariant set. Second, we provide a linear programming criterion allowing to compare the conservativeness of two arbitrary given Path-Complete Lyapunov functions

    Exploiting Split Browsers for Efficiently Protecting User Data

    Offloading complex tasks to a resource-abundant environment like the cloud, can extend the capabilities of resource constrained mobile devices, extend battery life, and improve user experience. Split browsing is a new paradigm that adopts this strategy to improve web browsing on devices like smartphones and tablets. Split browsers offload computation to the cloud by design; they are composed by two parts, one running on the thin client and one in the cloud. Rendering takes place primarily in the latter, while a bitmap or a simplified web page is communicated to the client. Despite its difference with traditional web browsing, split browsing still suffers from the same types of threats, such as cross-site scripting. In this paper, we propose exploiting the design of split browsers to also utilize cloud resources for protecting against various threats efficiently. We begin by systematically studying split browsing architectures, and then proceed to propose two solutions, in parallel and inline cloning, that exploit the inherent features of this new browsing paradigm to accurately and efficiently protect user data against common web exploits.     End-to-end quality aware optimization for multimedia clouds

    This article presents a novel, end-to-end, qualityaware optimization framework for multimedia clouds, where path selection mechanisms are exploited in conjunction with media optimization in order to support multimedia delivery in a quality-aware manner. As wireless data traffic worldwide is characterized by exponential growth, with the most prominent part being multimedia services, consumers get in the challenging position to compete for the limited wireless network resources. Cloud technologies and especially Software-Defined Networking is the perfect candidate technology in order to provide an elastic, dynamic provisioning of network resources that adapt to a highly changing environment, where application requirements and data volumes vary over time. This work combines the selection of the optimum path in the core network with quality-aware media adaptation based on the current conditions of the wireless access network. Thus the proposed framework achieves efficient network resources utilization in an end-to-end fashion

    Do bilinguals have different concepts? The case of shape and material in Japanese L2 users of English

    An experiment investigated whether Japanese speakers’ categorisation of objects and substances as shape or material is influenced by acquiring English, based on Imai and Gentner (1997). Subjects were presented with an item such as a cork pyramid and asked to choose between two other items that matched it for shape (plastic pyramid) or for material (piece of cork). The hypotheses were that for simple objects the number of shape-based categorisations would increase according to experience of English and that the preference for shape and material-based categorisations of Japanese speakers of English would differ from mono¬lingual speakers of both languages. Subjects were 18 adult Japanese users of English who had lived in English-speaking countries between 6 months and 3 years (short-stay group), and 18 who had lived in English-speaking countries for 3 years or more (long-stay group). Both groups achieved above criterion on an English vocabulary test. Results were: both groups preferred material responses for simple objects and substances but not for complex objects, in line with Japanese mono¬linguals, but the long-stay group showed more shape preference than the short-stay group and also were less different from Americans. These effects of acquiring a second language on categorisation have implications for conceptual representation and methodology
