The Impact of Religious Beliefs and Practices on Coping with Health Challenges Posed by Covid-19

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, the aim of the present study was to investigate to what extent the undergraduate students of the Department of Dentistry, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, felt the need to come closer to their own religiosity, spirituality, or faith. Materials and methods: Empirical research was conducted by means of an anonymous questionnaire, comprising demographics and items focusing on religiosity, spirituality, and faith. The survey results were processed using “MICROSOFT EXCEL IBM SPSS STATISTICS 24” statistical processing software. Results:  To overcome health dilemmas, the wide majority of students did not focus on religious & spiritual practices (70% & 66.7%) while at the same time, their religiosity & spirituality was not enhanced (74% & 78%). However, for the same period, 53% of the students stated that their faith was enhanced. Conclusions: While overall students’ religiosity & spirituality indicators were low, for the same period they stated that their faith in overcoming health distress was strengthened, which triggers new questions and prompts further research in the field of humanities.&nbsp

THE INFLUENCE OF FEMALE SEX HORMONES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF PREGNANCY TUMOUR : EXPERIMENTAL STUDY IN RATS

THIS STUDY WAS UNDERTAKEN IN PURPOSE TO EVALUATE THE COMBINED INFLUENCE OF THE FEMALE SEX HORMONES (CHORIONIC GONADOTROPIN, ESTRADIOL, PROGESTERONE) AND THE CHRONIC IRRITATION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF PREGNANCY TUMOURS. CHRONIC IRRITATIONWAS CREATED ON THE BUCCAL MUCOSA OF FEMALE RATS AND AFTER 10 AND 20 DAYS RESPECTIVELY THE INTRAMUSCULAR ADMINISTRATION OF SEX HORMONES IN PREGNANCY LEVELS, STARTED ON THE SAME TIME WITH THE CONTROL GROUP. AFTER 21 DAYS THE ANIMALS WERE SACRIFICED, THE LEVEL OF SEX HORMONES IN THEIR BLOOD WAS MEASURED BY RADIOIMMUNOASSAY METHODS; THE LESIONS WERE STAINED WITH HAEMATOXYLIN - EOSIN, AS WELL GOMORI, AND HISTOLOGICALLY STUDIED. THE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF THE HISTOLOGICAL FINDINGS REVEALED THAT THE ADMINISTRATION OF PROGESTERONE AT LEVELS RESEMBLING THOSE OF PREGNANCY AND THREE HORMONES TOGETHER, CAUSED STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN THE DEGREE OF INFLAMMATORY INFILTRATION, OF FIBROBLASTIC HYPERPLASIA, OF COLLAGEN FORMATION AND OF VASCULARIZATION, WHICH ARE THE BASIC HISTOLOGICAL FEATURES OF PREGNANCY TUMOURS. IN CONCLUSION, THE PROGESTERONE LEVELS IN PRE - EXISTING IRRITATED ORAL MUCOSA MAY BE THE REASON CAUSING THE DEVELOPMENT OF PREGNANCY TUMOURS, WHEREAS LOCAL CHRONIC IRRITATION APPEARS TO BE A NECESSARY AUXILIARY FACTOR.ΣΤΗΝ ΠΑΡΟΥΣΑ ΕΡΕΥΝΗΤΙΚΗ ΕΡΓΑΣΙΑ ΜΕΛΕΤΗΘΗΚΕ Η ΕΠΙΔΡΑΣΗ ΤΩΝ ΓΕΝΝΗΤΙΚΩΝ ΟΡΜΟΝΩΝ (ΧΟΡΙΑΚΗ ΓΟΝΑΔΟΤΡΟΠΙΝΗ, ΟΙΣΤΡΑΔΙΟΛΗ, ΠΡΟΓΕΣΤΕΡΟΝΗ) ΚΑΙ ΤΟΥ ΧΡΟΝΙΟΥ ΕΡΕΘΙΣΜΟΥ ΣΤΗ ΔΗΜΙΟΥΡΓΙΑ ΟΓΚΩΝ ΚΥΗΣΗΣ ΣΕ ΘΗΛΥΚΟΥΣ ΕΠΙΜΥΕΣ. Central odontogenic fibroma: Report of case with immunohistochemical study

Objectives: To report a case of central odontogenic fibroma (COF) with immunohistochemical study. Clinical Presentation: We describe a case of epithelium-rich type of COF in the posterior region of the mandible of a 39-year-old woman. Immunohistochemical examination showed the odontogenic epithelium to be positive for high-molecular-weight cytokeratins, vimentin and CD99, and negative for CAM5.2. The stroma contained some myofibroblasts and many fibroblast-like cells positive for CD99. Conclusion: Our immunohistochemical findings, and especially the positive expression of vimentin from the epithelial cells of COF suggests that these cells are primordial. Last but not least, the presence of a relative small number of myofibroblasts in the stroma justifies the non-aggressive behavior of the neoplasm and supports that a part of stromal collagen of COF is produced by these cells
