    Families of moment matching based, structure preserving approximations for linear port Hamiltonian systems

    In this paper we propose a solution to the problem of moment matching with preservation of the port Hamiltonian structure, in the framework of time-domain moment matching. We characterize several families of parameterized port Hamiltonian models that match the moments of a given port Hamiltonian system, at a set of finite interpolation points. We also discuss the problem of Markov parameters matching for linear systems as a moment matching problem for descriptor representations associated to the given system, at zero interpolation points. Solving this problem yields families of parameterized reduced order models that achieve Markov parameter matching. Finally, we apply these results to the port Hamiltonian case, resulting in families of parameterized reduced order port Hamiltonian approximations.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, Automatica journa

    Occurrence of HIV eradication for preexposure prophylaxis treatment with a deterministic HIV model

    The authors examine the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) eradication in this study using a mathematical model and analyse the occurrence of virus eradication during the early stage of infection. To this end they use a deterministic HIV-infection model, modify it to describe the pharmacological dynamics of antiretroviral HIV drugs, and consider the clinical experimental results of preexposure prophylaxis HIV treatment. They also use numerical simulation to model the experimental scenario, thereby supporting the clinical results with a model-based explanation. The study results indicate that the protocol employed in the experiment can eradicate HIV in infected patients at the early stage of the infection

    Oxidative potential associated with urban aerosol deposited into the respiratory system and relevant elemental and ionic fraction contributions

    Size-segregated aerosol measurements were carried out at an urban and at an industrial site. Soluble and insoluble fractions of elements and inorganic ions were determined. Oxidative potential (OP) was assessed on the soluble fraction of Particulate Matter (PM) by ascorbic acid (AA), dichlorofluorescein (DCFH) and dithiothreitol (DTT) assays. Size resolved elemental, ion and OP doses in the head (H), tracheobronchial (TB) and alveolar (Al) regions were estimated using the Multiple-Path Particle Dosimetry (MPPD) model. The total aerosol respiratory doses due to brake and soil resuspension emissions were higher at the urban than at the industrial site. On the contrary, the doses of anthropic combustion tracers were generally higher at the industrial site. In general, the insoluble fraction was more abundantly distributed in the coarse than in the fine mode and vice versa for the soluble fraction. Consequently, for the latter, the percent of the total respiratory dose deposited in TB and Al regions increased. Oxidative potential assay (OPAA) doses were distributed in the coarse region; therefore, their major contribution was in the H region.     Eliminating ambiguities for quantum corrections to strings moving in AdS4×CP3AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3

    We apply a physical principle, previously used to eliminate ambiguities in quantum corrections to the 2 dimensional kink, to the case of spinning strings moving in AdS4×CP3AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3, thought of as another kind of two dimensional soliton. We find that this eliminates the ambiguities and selects the result compatible with AdS/CFT, providing a solid foundation for one of the previous calculations, which found agreement.     Improved flexibility and economics of Calcium Looping power plants by thermochemical energy storage

    Abstract In this work, a Calcium looping (CaL) system including high temperature sorbent storage is presented, allowing to reduce the size of the calciner and the associated capital-intensive equipment (ASU and CPU). Reduction of the capital costs is particularly important for power plants with low capacity factors, which is becoming increasingly frequent for fossil fuel power plants in electric energy mixes with increasing share of intermittent renewables. The process assessment is performed by: (i) defining pulverized coal power plant (PCPP) with CaL capture system with and without sorbent storage and their mass and energy balances at nominal load; (ii) defining a simple method to predict the performance of the plant at part-load; (iii) defining the economic model, including functions for the estimation of the plant equipment cost; (iv) performing yearly simulations of the systems to calculate yearly electricity production, CO2 emissions and levelized cost of electricity for different sizes of the calcination line and the storage system and (v) performing sensitivity analysis with different power production plans and carbon taxes. With this process, optimal size of the calciner and of the storage system minimizing the cost of electricity have been found. The optimal plant design was found to correspond to a solids storage system sized to manage the weekly cycling and a calciner line sized on the average weekly load. However, to avoid excessively large solids storage system, sizing the calciner on the average daily load and the storage system to manage the daily cycling appears more feasible from the logistic viewpoint and leads to minor economic penalty compared with the optimal plant design. For the selected case sized on the daily cycling, reduction of the cost of CO2 avoided between 16% and 26% have been obtained compared to the reference CaL plant without solids storage, for representative medium and low capacity factor scenarios respectively

    On the Dynamics of Inherent Balancing of Modular Multilevel DC-AC-DC Converters

    Modular multilevel dc–ac–dc converters (MMDACs) serve as an enabler for dc distribution systems. The modular multilevel structure enables flexible voltage transforms, but raises issues over balancing of the submodule (SM) capacitor voltages. This letter focuses on the dynamics of inherent balancing of MMDACs under circulant modulation. We provide an invariance-like result using a variant of Barbalat's Lemma and prove that the SM capacitor voltages converge to the kernel of the circulant switching matrix, which is the intersection of the invariant sets for each switching state. We further interpret the balancing dynamics as a permuted linear time-invariant system and prove that the envelop of the balancing trajectories is governed by the eigenvalues of the permuted state-transition matrix. This result extends previous full-rank criterion for inherent balancing in a steady state and provides new insight into the dynamic behavior of MMDACs

    Element levels and predictors of exposure in the hair of Ethiopian children

    Children’s development and health may be affected by toxic heavy metal exposure or suboptimal essential element intake. This study aimed to provide updated information regarding the concentrations of 41 elements in children’s hair (aged under 18) living in a rural area of the Benishangul-Gumuz region, Ethiopia. The highest average levels (as a geometric mean) for toxic heavy metals were obtained for Al (1 mg kg−1), Pb (3.1 mg kg−1), and Ni (1.2 mg kg−1), while the lowest concentrations among the essential elements were found for Co (0.32 mg kg−1), Mo (0.07 mg kg−1), Se (0.19 mg kg−1), and V (0.8 mg kg−1). Hair analysis was combined with a survey to evaluate relationships and variations among subgroups and potential metal exposure predictors. Females showed significantly higher concentrations for most hair elements, excluding Zn, than males, and the 6–11 years age group reported the highest levels for Be, Ce, Co, Fe, La, Li, Mo, and Na. The main predictors of exposure to toxic elements were fish consumption for Hg and drinking water for Ba, Be, Cs, Li, Ni, Tl, and U. The data from this study can be used to develop prevention strategies for children’s health and protection in developing countries

    Kaluza-Klein gauge and minimal integrable extension of OSp(4|6)/(SO(1,3) x U(3)) sigma-model

    Basing upon experience from performing double-dimensional reduction of the D=11 supermembrane on AdS_4 x S^7 background to Type IIA superstring on AdS_4 x CP^3 we introduce Kaluza-Klein (partial) kappa-symmetry gauge as a vanishing condition of the contribution to the D=11 supervielbein components tangent to D=10 space-time proportional to the differential of the coordinate parametrizing compact 11-th space-time dimension, that is identified with the supermembrane world-volume compact dimension. For AdS_4 x S^7 supermembrane Kaluza-Klein gauge removes half Grassmann coordinates associated with 8 space-time supersymmetries, broken by the AdS_4 x CP^3 superbackground, by imposing D=3 (anti-)Majorana condition on them. The consideration relies on the realization of osp(4|8) isometry superalgebra of the AdS_4 x S^7 superbackground as D=3 N=8 superconformal algebra. Requiring further vanishing of the D=10 dilaton leaves in the sector of broken supersymmetries just two Grassmann coordinates organized into D=3 (anti-)Majorana spinor that defines minimal SL(2,R)-covariant extension of the OSp(4|6)/(SO(1,3)x U(3)) sigma-model. Among 4 possibilities of such a minimal extension we consider in detail one, that corresponds to picking out D=3 Majorana coordinate related to broken Poincare supersymmetry, and show that the AdS_4 x CP^3 superstring equations of motion in this partial kappa-symmetry gauge are integrable.
