Interleukin-6: Unravelling its role in sarcopenia pathogenesis and exploring therapeutic avenues
This review explores the intricate relationship between interleukin-6 (IL-6) and sarcopenia, a prevalent condition characterized by progressive skeletal muscle loss, particularly in aging populations. Emphasizing the rising prevalence and health challenges posed by sarcopenia, the paper delves into the multifunctional roles of IL-6 in immune response, inflammation and inflammaging associated with sarcopenia. Significantly elevated in sarcopenic individuals, IL-6 prompts an exploration of its molecular impact on muscle wasting. The review critically assesses IL-6 as a potential biomarker for sarcopenia diagnosis and prognosis while also examining therapeutic interventions targeting IL-6 signaling pathways, offering a foundation for future research and the development of targeted therapeutic strategies to alleviate the impact of this debilitating condition
Tuber pulchrosporum sp. nov., a black truffle of the Aestivum clade (Tuberaceae, Pezizales) from the Balkan peninsula
Knowledge on the diversity of hypogeous sequestrate ascomycetes is still limited in the Balkan Peninsula. A new species of truffle, Tuber pulchrosporum, is described from Greece and Bulgaria. Specimens were collected from habitats dominated by various oak species (i.e. Quercus ilex, Q. coccifera, Q. robur) and other angiosperms. They are morphologically characterised by subglobose, ovoid to irregularly lobed, yellowish-brown to dark brown ascomata, usually with a shallow basal cavity and surface with fissures and small, dense, almost flat, trihedral to polyhedral warts. Ascospores are ellipsoid to subfusiform, uniquely ornamented, crested to incompletely reticulate and are produced in (1–)2–8-spored asci. Hair-like, hyaline to light yellow hyphae protrude from the peridium surface. According to the outcome of ITS rDNA sequence analysis, this species forms a distinct well-supported group in the Aestivum clade, with T. panniferum being the closest phylogenetic taxon

Neck circumference is associated with adipose tissue content in thigh skeletal muscle in overweight and obese premenopausal women
Neck circumference (NC) has been proposed as a simple and practical tool, independently associated
with cardiometabolic risk factors. However, the association of NC with inter-muscular adipose
tissue (IMAT) is still to be determined. We aimed to examine the association of NC with thigh IMAT,
and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) measured with computed tomography (CT) in overweight/obese
women. 142 premenopausal overweight and obese Caucasian women participated in this crosssectional study. NC was measured with an inextensible metallic tape above the thyroid cartilage
according to International Society for Advancement of Kinanthropometry protocol. Thigh IMAT and
VAT volumes were measured with a single cross-sectional CT. Regarding the covariates, fat mass (FM)
was assessed with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and physical activity was objectively measured
with accelerometry. NC was positively associated with thigh IMAT and VAT volumes (standardized
β coefcient: β=0.45, P-value= ≤0.001, β=0.60, P=≤0.001; respectively), which persisted after
adjusting for age, height, overall FM or moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Our fndings show that
NC is associated with thigh IMAT volume in overweight and obese premenopausal Caucasian women,
regardless of the amount of lower-body fatness. These results suggest underscoring the relevance of NC
as a marker of adipose tissue content in thigh skeletal muscle.Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology
