Market Reactions to News of Accounting Manipulation
There is not enough empirical evidence about test of the semi-strong efficient hypothesis using newspaper publications. In this paper, we investigate stock market reactions to news of accounting manipulation which are reported in newspapers. Semi-strong efficient market hypothesis posits that stock prices quickly reflect all publicly available information, of which the newspaper is a part. Newspapers are a public source of information, and an important transmitter of news to the stock market. The news of accounting manipulation that is published in newspaper can have repercussions on stock prices. The purpose of the paper, therefore, is to investigate stock market reactions to news of accounting manipulation that is reported in the newspaper. To test the semi-strong efficient hypothesis, we focus on newspaper reports of accounting manipulation from 36 countries around the world. We hypothesise that there are statistically significant differences between means of post- and pre-event day cumulative average abnormal stock returns of firms caught in accounting manipulation. Results of data analysed using events study methodology are consistent with our hypothesis. Private sector preference for professional accountants in Nigeria
Purpose: This study is to examine the private sector demand
for CFOs with certain professional accountancy bodies’
qualification in Nigeria’s listed companies from 2012 to 2018,
inclusive.Design/methodology/approach: The population of this
study comprises non-financial services companies quoted on
the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Purposive sampling method was
used to select the 49 sample used for the research. Research
data were tested using non-parametric statistics and simple
regression model.Findings: Results from non-parametric statistics suggest that
89% of all CFOs are ICAN qualified; about 98% of the Nigerian
CFOs are ICAN qualified while about 13% of the foreign CFOs
hold the ICAN qualification. The evidence further suggests that
the ICAN qualification is statistically different from that of
non-ICAN qualification. Finally, the evidence indicates that
CFOs’ nationalities positively and significantly influence their
affiliations.Practical Implications: The paper recommends that ICAN
should be empowered to regulate the accountancy profession
in Nigeria. In the alternative there should be created a
consortium of accountancy bodies to regulate the accountancy
profession in Nigeria.Originality/value: This is the first empirical paper to
examine the demand for CFOs in private listed companies in
Nigeria, and the first to link CFOs nationalities and CFOs
affiliations with professional accountancy bodies in Nigeria.peer-reviewe
(I parte)

Relationship between intangible assets, called-out directors’ operational dichotomy and corporate financial performance
Purpose: This study examines the relationship between intangible assets (INTAN), Executive Directors (EDs), Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) and corporate financial performance.
Research methodology: This study utilizes multivariate regression models to analyze datasets of 670 firm-year observations, from 2012-2020.
Results: Our main OLS and FE multivariate regression results in Model 2 suggest that INTAN, CHAIR, CEOs, CFOs and strong BDIND significantly increase corporate financial performance. In Model 1 of our main tables (Tables 5 and 6), INTAN and CHAIR do not appear to be significant, although their observed signs suggest that they increase corporate financial performance. Except for YEAR, the rest control variables significantly affect corporate financial performance. Taken together, these results provide conclusive evidence that INTAN, CHAIR, CEOs, CFOs and BDIND have positive and significant effects on corporate financial performance. We, therefore, recommend that Nigerian companies should strengthen their corporate governance mechanisms to boost financial performance.
Limitation: The study is limited by incomplete data on all variables, especially relating to running Fixed Effects models, where the data is unbalanced.
Contribution: The study extends the literature on call-out Board members’ operational dichotomy.
Novelty: This is the first from a developing economy to make a testable hypothesis on the relationship between intangible assets and corporate financial performance
