Muscling In on PGC-1α for Improved Quality of Life in ALS
Impaired activity of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ coactivator (PGC)-1α has been implicated in the pathophysiology of several neurodegenerative disorders. In this issue, Da Cruz et al. (2012) show improved muscle function, but not survival, with increased PGC-1α activity in muscle in a mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Knowledge and practice of traditional healers in oral health in the Bui Division, Cameroon
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The majority of Cameroonians depend on traditional medicines for their health care needs and about seven per cent of the average household health budget is spent on traditional medicines irrespective of their incomes. The aim of the present study was to determine the oral care knowledge and practices of Traditional Healers (TH) on oral health delivery in the urban and rural areas of Bui Division of Cameroon and the objectives to determine the cost of treatment and reasons why people visit TH.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The present study was cross sectional and utilized semi-structured questionnaires to collect data.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The sample consisted of 21 TH and 52 clients of TH. Sixty two percent of the TH's were above 40 years and 90% male. The mean age was 46 years (range 20-77 years). Twenty four percent of the TH practiced as herbalists and the remainder both divination and herbalism. Sixty seven percent of people in the Bui Division, who patronize TH for their oral health needs, fall within the 20-40 year age group. There is little collaboration between the oral health workers and TH and only 6% of all patients seen by TH are referred to the dentist. Socio-cultural and economic factors affect the oral health care seeking behavior of patients in this area and only 6.5% of patients visit dental clinics. Reasons for not attending dental clinics included high cost, poor accessibility, superstition and fear. TH's are not experienced in the treatment of pulpitis - the majority of patients who presented with toothache had temporary or no relief, but despite this 67% reported being satisfied with their treatment. Sixty nine percent of the patients visited TH because of low cost - the average cost of treatment with TH (approximately 50).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Traditional healers are willing to co-operate with oral health workers in improving oral health. Since they have a vital role to play in health care seeking attitudes in this community and barriers affecting the oral health seeking behaviours should be removed. Mutual cooperation, collaboration and by integrating TH into primary oral health care services needs to be increased.</p
Warren, McCain, and Obama Needed Fuzzy Sets at Presidential Forum
During a presidential forum in the 2008 US presidential campaign, the moderator, Pastor Rick Warren, wanted Senator John McCain and then-Senator Barack Obama to define rich with a specific number. Warren wanted to know at what specific income level a person goes from being not rich to rich. The problem with this question is that there is no specific income at which a person makes the leap from being not rich to being rich. This is because rich is a fuzzy set, not a crisp set, with different incomes having different degrees of membership in the rich fuzzy set. Fuzzy logic is needed to properly ask and answer Warren's question about quantitatively defining rich. An imprecise natural language word like rich should be considered to have qualitative definitions, crisp quantitative definitions, and fuzzy quantitative definitions
Pair emission from a relativistic domain wall in antiferromagnets
Magnon emission and excitation by a relativistic domain wall at a constant
velocity in antiferromagnet is theoretically studied. A pair emission due to a
quadratic magnon coupling is shown to be dominant. The emission corresponds in
the comoving frame to a vacuum polarization induced by a zero-energy
instability of the Lorentz-boosted anomalous response function. The emission
rate is sensitive to the magnon dispersion and wall profile, and is
significantly enhanced for a thin wall with velocity close to the effective
light velocity. The Ohmic damping constant due to magnon excitation at low
velocity is calculated
Large language model for Bible sentiment analysis: Sermon on the Mount
The revolution of natural language processing via large language models has
motivated its use in multidisciplinary areas that include social sciences and
humanities and more specifically, comparative religion. Sentiment analysis
provides a mechanism to study the emotions expressed in text. Recently,
sentiment analysis has been used to study and compare translations of the
Bhagavad Gita, which is a fundamental and sacred Hindu text. In this study, we
use sentiment analysis for studying selected chapters of the Bible. These
chapters are known as the Sermon on the Mount. We utilize a pre-trained
language model for sentiment analysis by reviewing five translations of the
Sermon on the Mount, which include the King James version, the New
International Version, the New Revised Standard Version, the Lamsa Version, and
the Basic English Version. We provide a chapter-by-chapter and verse-by-verse
comparison using sentiment and semantic analysis and review the major
sentiments expressed. Our results highlight the varying sentiments across the
chapters and verses. We found that the vocabulary of the respective
translations is significantly different. We detected different levels of
humour, optimism, and empathy in the respective chapters that were used by
Jesus to deliver his message
Neglected isolated plantar dislocation of middle cuneiform : a case report
BACKGROUND: Four cases of plantar dislocation of middle cuneiform have been reported in the english literature. All of them were fresh cases and treated with open reduction. We are reporting a case of neglected plantar dislocation of middle cuneiform which was treated with excision. CASE PRESENTATION: A farmer presented with a painful plantar dislocation of middle cuneiform bone after 9 months of injury. The bone was deformed and was excised by a plantar incision. It resulted in painless foot with no disability. CONCLUSION: The neglected plantar dislocated middle cuneiform bone becomes deformed due to repeated weight bearing. The gap gets filled with Fibrous tissue. Excision of the cuneiform gives good results

This complex is compared with two reference complexes bearing 4,4â-di-tert-butyl-2,2â- bipyridine, and solution-processed organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been fabricated from these materials.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Strain Distribution During Growth of Ge/Si(001) and the Effect of Surfactant Layers
Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction has been employed to determine directly the distribution of strain in the plane of the interface during deposition of Ge onto Si(001). The corresponding strain distribution has also been deduced for a relaxed island whose atomic structure has been determined by molecular dynamics. The results illustrate the central role of elastic deformation of islands in the initial stage of strain relief. The results are also compared with those for growth with a Sb surfactant layer which suppresses island formation. An investigation of surfactant-like behaviour is also presented for homoepitaxial growth of Ag on Ag(111), where sub-monolayer coverages of Sb promote a layer-by-layer growth mode over a wide temperature range
Clothianidin-resistant Anopheles gambiae adult mosquitoes from Yaoundé, Cameroon, display reduced susceptibility to SumiShieldŸ 50WG, a neonicotinoid formulation for indoor residual spraying
Background:
Chronic exposure of mosquito larvae to pesticide residues and cross-resistance mechanisms are major drivers of tolerance to insecticides used for vector control. This presents a concern for the efficacy of clothianidin, an agricultural neonicotinoid prequalified for Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS).
Methods:
Using standard bioassays, we tested if reduced susceptibility to clothianidin can affect the efficacy of SumiShieldŸ 50WG, one of four new IRS formulations containing clothianidin. We simultaneously monitored susceptibility to clothianidin and to SumiShield 50WG, testing adults of Anopheles gambiae, An. coluzzii and Culex sp sampled from urban, suburban and agricultural areas of Yaoundé, Cameroon.
Results:
We found that in this geographic area, the level of susceptibility to the active ingredient predicted the efficacy of SumiShield 50WG. This formulation was very potent against populations that reached 100% mortality within 72 h of exposure to a discriminating concentration of clothianidin. By contrast, mortality leveled off at 75.4 ± 3.5% within 7 days of exposure to SumiShield 50WG in An. gambiae adults collected from a farm where the spraying of the two neonicotinoids acetamiprid and imidacloprid for crop protection is likely driving resistance to clothianidin.
Conclusions:
Despite the relatively small geographic extend of the study, the findings suggest that cross-resistance may impact the efficacy of some new IRS formulations and that alternative compounds could be prioritized in areas where neonicotinoid resistance is emerging
