The Spin Content of the Nucleon
The fraction of the nucleon spin that is carried by the quarks, , is computed in lattice QCD with dynamical staggered fermions. We

The Origin of Primordial Dwarf Stars and Baryonic Dark Matter
I present a scenario for the production of low mass, degenerate dwarfs of
mass via the mechanism of Lenzuni, Chernoff & Salpeter (1992).
Such objects meet the mass limit requirements for halo dark matter from
microlensing surveys while circumventing the chemical evolution constraints on
normal white dwarf stars. I describe methods to observationally constrain this
scenario and suggest that such objects may originate in small clusters formed
from the thermal instability of shocked, heated gas in dark matter haloes, such
as suggested by Fall & Rees (1985) for globular clusters.Comment: TeX, 4 pages plus 2 postscript figures. To appear in Astrophysical

Nuclear parton distribution functions and their uncertainties
We analyze experimental data of nuclear structure-function ratios
F_2^A/F_2^{A'} and Drell-Yan cross section ratios for obtaining optimum parton
distribution functions (PDFs) in nuclei. Then, uncertainties of the nuclear
PDFs are estimated by the Hessian method. Valence-quark distributions are
determined by the F_2 data at large x; however, the small-x part is not obvious
from the data. On the other hand, the antiquark distributions are determined
well at x~0.01 from the F_2 data and at x~0.1 by the Drell-Yan data; however,
the large-x behavior is not clear. Gluon distributions cannot be fixed by the
present data and they have large uncertainties in the whole x region.
Parametrization results are shown in comparison with the data. We provide a

Magnetic moment and anisotropy in FenCom clusters
Electronic structure calculations of FenCom (n+m=5 and 13) are used to examine the effects of alloying on the magnetic moment and magnetic anisotropies. Our density-functional studies show that many mixed clusters have moments comparable to or higher than the pure clusters. The mixed clusters, however, have very low anisotropies and could be ideal as soft magnetic materials. It is shown that shape, composition, and compositional ordering must be considered for optimization of anisotropy energies
Scheme Independence of
We work with two general factorization schemes in order to explore the
consequences of imposing scheme independence on . We see that
although the light quark sector is indifferent to the choice of a particular
scheme, the extension of the calculations to the heavy quark sector indicates

PETA-3/CD151, a member of the transmembrane 4 superfamily, is localised to the plasma membrane and endocytic system of endothelial cells, associates with multiple integrins and modulates cell function
The Transmembrane 4 Superfamily member, PETA-3/CD151, is ubiquitously expressed by endothelial cells in vivo. In cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells PETA-3 is present on the plasma membrane and predominantly localises to regions of cell-cell contact. Additionally, this protein is abundant within an intracellular compartment which accounts for up to 66% of the total PETA-3 expressed. Intracellular PETA-3 showed colocalisation with transferrin receptor and CD63 suggesting an endosomal/lysosomal localisation which was supported by immuno-electronmicroscopy studies. Co-immunoprecipitation experiments investigating possible interactions of PETA-3 with other molecules demonstrated associations with several integrin chains including beta1, beta3, beta4, (alpha)2, (alpha)3, (alpha)5, (alpha)6 and provide the first report of Transmembrane 4 Superfamily association with the (alpha)6beta4 integrin. Using 2-colour confocal microscopy, we demonstrated similar localisation of PETA-3 and integrin chains within cytoplasmic vesicles and endothelial cell junctions. In order to assess the functional implications of PETA-3/integrin associations, the effect of anti-PETA-3 antibodies on endothelial function was examined. Anti-PETA-3 mAb inhibited endothelial cell migration and modulated in vitro angiogenesis, but had no detectable effect on neutrophil transendothelial migration. The broad range of integrin associations and the presence of PETA-3 with integrins both on the plasma membrane and within intracellular vesicles, suggests a primary role for PETA-3 in regulating integrin trafficking and/or function.Paul M. Associated production as a probe of the polarized gluon distribution
Associated production of and a has recently been proposed
as clean probe of the gluon distribution. The same mechanism can be used to
probe the polarized gluon content of the proton in polarized proton-proton
collisions. We study production at both polarized fixed

Gamma ray astronomy and baryonic dark matter
Recently, Dixon et al. have re-analyzed the EGRET data, finding a
statistically significant diffuse -ray emission from the galactic halo.
We show that this emission can naturally be explained within a
previously-proposed model for baryonic dark matter, in which -rays are
produced through the interaction of high-energy cosmic-ray protons with cold
clouds clumped into dark clusters - these dark clusters supposedly
populate the outer galactic halo and can show up in microlensing observations.
Our estimate for the halo -ray flux turns out to be in remarkably good
agreement with the discovery by Dixon et al. We also address future prospects
