Improved performance of silicon nitride-based high temperature ceramics

    Get PDF
Recent progress in the production of Si3N4 based ceramics is reviewed: (1) high temperature strength and toughness of hot pressed Si3N4 were improved by using high purity powder and a stabilized ZrO2 additive, (2) impact resistance of hot pressed Si3N4 was increased by the use of a crushable energy absorbing layer, (3) the oxidation resistance and strength of reaction sintered Si3N4 were increased by impregnating reaction sintered silicon nitride with solutions that oxidize to Al2O3 or ZrO2, (4) beta prime SiA1ON compositions and sintering aids were developed for improved oxidation resistance or improved high temperature strength

Effect of cyclic conditions on the dynamic oxidation of gas turbine superalloys

    Get PDF
The effects of operating parameters of a dynamic apparatus used to study oxidation and thermal fatigue of gas turbine materials were studied. IN-100, TD-NiCr, and WI-52 were tested at a maximum temperature of 1,090 deg C. Heating time per cycle was varied from 1/20 hr to 10 hr. Minimum temperatures between heating cycles were room temperature, 430 deg, and 650 deg C. Cooling air velocities were zero, Mach 0.7, and Mach 1. Increasing the number of cycles for a given time at temperature increased weight loss. Thermal fatigue was related to number of cycles more than to time at temperature

Effects of sigma-phase formation on some mechanical properties of a wrought nickel-base superalloy (IN-100)

    Get PDF
The effect of sigma phase formation on an extruded and forged nickel base superalloy with the composition of the casting alloy IN-100 was studied. By adding only aluminum and titanium to remelt stock, three compositions were produced which had varying propensities for sigma formation. These compositions were given a four step heat treatment and were stress-ruptured or tensile tested. The very sigma prone composition had a shorter rupture life than the sigma-free or moderately sigma prone compositions when tested at 843 and 885 C. Elongation in room temperature tensile tests was considerably lower for the very sigma prone composition than for the other two wrought compositions after prolonged exposure at 732 or 843 C

Method of heat treating a formed powder product material

    Get PDF
Heat treating a product material of prealloyed powders after shaping by superplastic deformation restores the ability of the material to resist deformation at high temperatures. Heat treating is accomplished by heating to a temperature between the solidus and liquidus with the application of isostatic pressure to close any voids. This pressure may be simultaneously applied while the material is at the heat treating temperature. The pressure may also be applied when the material cools to a temperature between that at which it is shaped and the solidus

Method of forming articles of manufacture from superalloy powders

A highly alloyed superalloy material is obtained using prealloyed powders. The material is easily shaped at high temperatures when it becomes superplastic because of its particular microstructure
