A new species of stalked crinoid (Echinodermata) of possible Late Silurian age from central Newfoundland

    Get PDF
A new fossil locality within a sequence previously assigned to the Middle Ordovician Baie D'Espoir Group in south-central Newfoundland contains fragmented crinoid columnals and brachiopods. Distinctive, pentastellate crinoid columnals, similar to those assigned to the monobathrid camerate Hexacrinites Austin and Austin by Russian authors, are named Hexacrinites? Pentastellatus n. sp. Nodal(?) columnals of this species have a circular, depressed articular facet, with a conical to bowl-like crenularium, a depressed, circular areola, a raised perilumen and a short, slender axial canal of pentagonal section. The oldest Hexacrinites sensu stricto are Late Silurian, suggesting that the fossiliferous strata have been incorrectly assigned to the Ordovician. Cross-sections of brachiopods from the same locality include an example that resembles several Early Silurian to Late Devonian pentameroid genera including Brooksina Kirk, 1922. Correlation with Late Silurian, bivalve-bearing strata SO km to the northeast would indicate that a major unconformity may occur above the fossiliferous Early and Middle Ordovician strata and the Early Ordovician ophiolite complexes. Trajectories of objectively measured physical activity in free-living older men.

BACKGROUND: The steep decline in physical activity (PA) among the oldest old is not well understood; there is little information about the patterns of change in PA and sedentary behaviour (SB) in older people. Longitudinal data on objectively measured PA data can give insights about how PA and SB change with age. METHODS: Men age 70-90 yr, from a United Kingdom population-based cohort wore a GT3X accelerometer over the hip annually on up to three occasions (56%, 50%, and 51% response rates) spanning 2 yr. Multilevel models were used to estimate change in activity. Men were grouped according to achieving ≥150 min·wk of MVPA in bouts of ≥10 min (current guidelines) at two or three time points. RESULTS: A total of 1419 ambulatory men had ≥600 min wear time on ≥3 d at ≥2 time points. At baseline, men took 4806 steps per day and spent 72.5% of their day in SB, 23.1% in light PA, and 4.1% in moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA). Mean change per year was -341 steps, +1.1% SB, -0.7% light PA, and -0.4% MVPA each day (all P 30 min increased from 5.1 by 0.1 per year (P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Among older adults, the steep decline in total PA occurred because of reductions in MVPA, while light PA is relatively spared and sedentary time and long sedentary bouts increase

Minimal size of a barchan dune

Barchans are dunes of high mobility which have a crescent shape and propagate under conditions of unidirectional wind. However, sand dunes only appear above a critical size, which scales with the saturation distance of the sand flux [P. Hersen, S. Douady, and B. Andreotti, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf{89,}} 264301 (2002); B. Andreotti, P. Claudin, and S. Douady, Eur. Phys. J. B {\bf{28,}} 321 (2002); G. Sauermann, K. Kroy, and H. J. Herrmann, Phys. Rev. E {\bf{64,}} 31305 (2001)]. It has been suggested by P. Hersen, S. Douady, and B. Andreotti, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf{89,}} 264301 (2002) that this flux fetch distance is itself constant. Indeed, this could not explain the proto size of barchan dunes, which often occur in coastal areas of high litoral drift, and the scale of dunes on Mars. In the present work, we show from three dimensional calculations of sand transport that the size and the shape of the minimal barchan dune depend on the wind friction speed and the sand flux on the area between dunes in a field. Our results explain the common appearance of barchans a few tens of centimeter high which are observed along coasts. Furthermore, we find that the rate at which grains enter saltation on Mars is one order of magnitude higher than on Earth, and is relevant to correctly obtain the minimal dune size on Mars.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure

Information capacity in the weak-signal approximation

We derive an approximate expression for mutual information in a broad class of discrete-time stationary channels with continuous input, under the constraint of vanishing input amplitude or power. The approximation describes the input by its covariance matrix, while the channel properties are described by the Fisher information matrix. This separation of input and channel properties allows us to analyze the optimality conditions in a convenient way. We show that input correlations in memoryless channels do not affect channel capacity since their effect decreases fast with vanishing input amplitude or power. On the other hand, for channels with memory, properly matching the input covariances to the dependence structure of the noise may lead to almost noiseless information transfer, even for intermediate values of the noise correlations. Since many model systems described in mathematical neuroscience and biophysics operate in the high noise regime and weak-signal conditions, we believe, that the described results are of potential interest also to researchers in these areas.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in Physical Review

Association of Botryosphaeriaceae grapevine trunk disease fungi with the reproductive structures of Vitis vinifera

Several species belonging to the Botryosphaeriaceae were isolated from grapevine (Vitis vinifera) tissue other than wood during a survey of two vineyards planted to cultivars ‘Chardonnay’ and ‘Shiraz’ in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia over the 2007/08 and 2008/09 growing seasons. A total of 188 isolates corresponding to nine different species of Diplodia, Dothiorella and Neofusicoccum anamorphs were isolated from dormant buds, flowers, pea-sized berries and mature berries prior to harvest in addition to 142 isolates from the trunks of the same vines. Furthermore, the occurrence of Dothiorella viticola, Diplodia mutila and Neofusicoccum australe is reported here for the first time from grapevines in the Hunter Valley. These findings may provide important information for the management and spread of Botryosphaeriaceae in vineyards where they are considered serious wood-invading pathogens. Botryosphaeriaceae are occasionally found on bunches, however, until now they have not directly been related  to bunch rots. Control strategies for trunk diseases caused by Botryosphaeriaceae are currently limited to remedial surgery and wound protection. These strategies do not consider other grapevine tissue as potential inoculum sources for infection of Botryosphaeriaceae in the vineyard.

Patient- and Hospital-level Predictors of 30-day Readmission after Acute Coronary Syndrome: A Systematic Review

Background: Readmissions following acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are costly and may be partly due to poor care. A previous systematic review examined the literature through 2007. Since then, health policy has changed and additional articles examining predictors of readmission have appeared. We sought to conduct a systematic review of the literature after 2007 regarding socio-demographic, clinical, psychosocial, and hospital level predictors of 30-day readmissions after acute coronary syndrome. Methods: A systematic search of the literature using Pubmed, OVID, ISI web of science, CINAHL, ACP and the Cochrane Library was conducted, including a quality assessment using Downs and Black criteria. Articles reporting on 30-day readmission rate and examining at least one patient-level predictor of readmission at 30 days were included; articles examining interventions to reduce readmissions were excluded. Results: Twenty-two studies were included in this review from which more than 60 predictors of 30-day readmission were identified. Age, co-morbidity, COPD, diabetes, hypertension and having had a previous AMI were all consistently associated with higher risk of readmission. However, no studies reported psychosocial factors as predictors of readmission at 30 days. Conclusion: Studies of readmission should adjust for age and co-morbidity, consistent predictors of readmission at 30-days. Patients with these risk factors for readmission should be targeted for more-intensive follow-up after discharge. Psychosocial predictors of readmission remains a relatively unexplored area of research

    Spectroscopy of neutron-unbound 27,28^{27,28}F

The ground state of 28^{28}F has been observed as an unbound resonance 22‾02\underline{2}0 keV above the ground state of 27^{27}F. Comparison of this result with USDA/USDB shell model predictions leads to the conclusion that the 28^{28}F ground state is primarily dominated by sdsd-shell configurations. Here we present a detailed report on the experiment in which the ground state resonance of 28^{28}F was first observed. Additionally, we report the first observation of a neutron-unbound excited state in 27^{27}F at an excitation energy of 250‾0(22‾0)25\underline{0}0 (2\underline{2}0) keV.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication in Phys.
