A constant of quantum motion in two dimensions in crossed magnetic and electric fields
We consider the quantum dynamics of a single particle in the plane under the
influence of a constant perpendicular magnetic and a crossed electric potential
field. For a class of smooth and small potentials we construct a non-trivial
invariant of motion. Do to so we proof that the Hamiltonian is unitarily
equivalent to an effective Hamiltonian which commutes with the observable of

Hospital Performance Measures and Quality of Care
Increasingly, quality improvement initiatives emphasize public reporting of hospital performance measures, to encourage providers to improve, to help consumers pick providers, and to determine provider payments. Although these measures are based on compliance with well established processes of care, it is unknown whether quality measured in this way is correlated with, or predictive of, clinical outcomes. This Issue Brief summarizes studies that examine and quantify the relationship between frequently used measures of hospital performance and hospital mortality
New method for the time calibration of an interferometric radio antenna array
Digital radio antenna arrays, like LOPES (LOFAR PrototypE Station), detect
high-energy cosmic rays via the radio emission from atmospheric extensive air
showers. LOPES is an array of dipole antennas placed within and triggered by
the KASCADE-Grande experiment on site of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology,
Germany. The antennas are digitally combined to build a radio interferometer by
forming a beam into the air shower arrival direction which allows measurements
even at low signal-to-noise ratios in individual antennas. This technique
requires a precise time calibration. A combination of several calibration steps
is used to achieve the necessary timing accuracy of about 1 ns. The group
delays of the setup are measured, the frequency dependence of these delays
(dispersion) is corrected in the subsequent data analysis, and variations of
the delays with time are monitored. We use a transmitting reference antenna, a
beacon, which continuously emits sine waves at known frequencies. Variations of
the relative delays between the antennas can be detected and corrected for at

Varietal effects on methane intensity of paddy fields under different irrigation management
Alternate wetting and drying irrigation (AWD) has been shown to decrease water use and trace gas emissions from paddy fields. Whereas genotypic water use shows little variation, it has been shown that rice varieties differ in the magnitude of their methane emissions. Management and variety-related emission factors have been proposed for modelling the impact of paddy production on climate change; however, the magnitude of a potential reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by changing varieties has not yet been fully assessed. AWD has been shown to affect genotypic yields and high-yielding varieties suffer the greatest loss when grown under AWD. The highest yielding varieties may not have the highest methane emissions; thus, a potential yield loss could be compensated by a larger reduction in methane emissions. However, AWD can only be implemented under full control of irrigation water, leaving the rainy seasons with little scope to reduce methane emissions from paddy fields. Employing low-emitting varieties during the rainy season may be an option to reduce methane emissions but may compromise farmers’ income if such varieties perform less well than the current standard. Methane emissions and rice yields were determined in field trials over two consecutive winter/spring seasons with continuously flooded and AWD irrigation treatments for 20 lowland rice varieties in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. Based on the results, this paper investigates the magnitude of methane savings through varietal choice for both AWD and continuous flooding in relation to genotypic yields and explores potential options for compensating farmers’ mitigation efforts
Study on the combined threshold for gully-type debris flow early warning
Gully-type debris flow induced by high-intensity and short-duration rainfall
frequently causes great loss of properties and causalities in mountainous
regions of southwest China. In order to reduce the risk by geohazards, early
warning systems have been provided. A triggering index can be detected in an
early stage by the monitoring of rainfall and the changes in physical
properties of the deposited materials along debris flow channels. Based on the
method of critical pore pressure for slope stability analysis, this study
presents critical pore pressure threshold in combination with rainfall
factors for gully-type debris flow early warning. The Wenjia gully, which
contains an enormous amount of loose material, was selected as a case study
to reveal the relationship between the rainfall and pore pressure by field
monitoring data. A three-level early warning system (zero, attention, and
warning) is adopted and the corresponding judgement conditions are defined in
real time. Based on this threshold, there are several rainfall events in
recent years have been validated in Wenjia gully, which prove that such a
combined threshold may be a reliable approach for the early warning of
gully-type debris flow to safeguard the population in the mountainous areas.</p
Opinion Formation in Laggard Societies
We introduce a statistical physics model for opinion dynamics on random
networks where agents adopt the opinion held by the majority of their direct
neighbors only if the fraction of these neighbors exceeds a certain threshold,
p_u. We find a transition from total final consensus to a mixed phase where
opinions coexist amongst the agents. The relevant parameters are the relative
sizes in the initial opinion distribution within the population and the
connectivity of the underlying network. As the order parameter we define the
asymptotic state of opinions. In the phase diagram we find regions of total
consensus and a mixed phase. As the 'laggard parameter' p_u increases the
regions of consensus shrink. In addition we introduce rewiring of the
underlying network during the opinion formation process and discuss the
resulting consequences in the phase diagram.Comment: 5 pages, eps fig
Random Time-Dependent Quantum Walks
We consider the discrete time unitary dynamics given by a quantum walk on the
lattice performed by a quantum particle with internal degree of freedom,
called coin state, according to the following iterated rule: a unitary update
of the coin state takes place, followed by a shift on the lattice, conditioned
on the coin state of the particle. We study the large time behavior of the
quantum mechanical probability distribution of the position observable in
when the sequence of unitary updates is given by an i.i.d. sequence of
random matrices. When averaged over the randomness, this distribution is shown
to display a drift proportional to the time and its centered counterpart is
shown to display a diffusive behavior with a diffusion matrix we compute. A
moderate deviation principle is also proven to hold for the averaged
distribution and the limit of the suitably rescaled corresponding
characteristic function is shown to satisfy a diffusion equation. A
generalization to unitary updates distributed according to a Markov process is
also provided. An example of i.i.d. random updates for which the analysis of
the distribution can be performed without averaging is worked out. The
distribution also displays a deterministic drift proportional to time and its
centered counterpart gives rise to a random diffusion matrix whose law we
compute. A large deviation principle is shown to hold for this example. We
finally show that, in general, the expectation of the random diffusion matrix

Do Financial Incentives Reduce Intrinsic Motivation for Weight Loss? Evidence from Two Tests of Crowding Out
Financial incentives have been used successfully to promote health behaviors, however they may be counterproductive if they crowd out pre-existing intrinsic motivation and lead to a decrease in performance once incentives are removed to a level lower than they had never been introduced. We provide new evidence that incentives do not crowd out intrinsic motivation in the case of weight loss. We measure motivation via a survey administered before and after the introduction of financial incentives in two weight loss field experiments and find no evidence that intrinsic motivation fell among participants receiving incentives compared to control participants who do not receive incentives
Correlated Markov Quantum Walks
We consider the discrete time unitary dynamics given by a quantum walk on
performed by a particle with internal degree of freedom, called coin

averaged distribution over the randomness at time in terms of the nth power
of an operator . By analyzing the spectrum of , we show that this
distribution posesses a drift proportional to the time and its centered
counterpart displays a diffusive behavior with a diffusion matrix we compute.
Moderate and large deviations principles are also proven to hold for the
averaged distribution and the limit of the suitably rescaled corresponding
characteristic function is shown to satisfy a diffusion equation.
An example of random updates for which the analysis of the distribution can
